As the new breed of superbikes pour into the country with requirment of min 95 RON octane fuel (RON is research octane number, it is typicaly higher than MON used in some places).
Speed 97 (it has RON 97 ) is the only fuel, but with limited availability. The Alternative is to use an octane booster for the other fuels (speed, xtrapremium, Power or even unleaded have a RON of 91 octane) So the question is which octane booster should one use to get the 91 octane to the 95 level in India ? looking for user feedback from all the superbikers. |

I have never used one, nor have heard from anyone that they work as efficiently as a 95 octane fuel.
But Bunny, please let us know more about your bike and everything and make a thread about it. Sorry if I sound repetitive ![]() Once again, congrats ! |

@Streetfighter : The Bharat pertrolem website specifies this BPCL SPEED 97
if you can belive them that is... STP is the one avaiable and used by some members. Sadly on the various review website no useful review is available as all evaluation are asuming you alrady have 95 octane fuel and want to boost it, and then the claim that they are all useless. This is because abroad 95 octane fuel is cheap and 97 is not too much extra as comaped to the cost of adding octane boster. that being said the logic why i wish to use octane boster is that in India we pay about Rs 16 per liter extra for speed 97, thus i am never sure if the guy selling speed 97 has not mixed a bit of normal fuel because no one will really know since all the test are for other adultrants(like kerosene desile etc) none test the octane rating (since only a anti knock engign is required which is only in IOC main testing labs) i am talking of the quick test perfomed. thus to be really sure i would like to get the regular fuel and add some adatives that i can rely on and be happyly on my way @crvlvr : you might be right about corrosive action and that is why i posted on the forum so that people who know stuff can enlighten. there is a type of adative MTM for boosting octane which is manganesium based (like the good old lead) that apparently does not damage the catalytic and is good for the engine since it prevents valve seat ression. I will put up more information as i keep reasearching into it. in the mean time anyone with some knowledge to share... please feel free |

Just to clarify: RON and MON are two different octane rating systems. For petrol, the RON number is typically 8-10 points higher than MON number. ie. RON 97 = 89MON.
1. First check to see what the rating is for your bike 2. Check to see what the rating is at the pump 3. If they are in different units (RON v. MON) make the appropriate adjustment. To make matters more complicated, in the US we use (RON+MON)/2. Which means the high octane rating that we get here 93 (RON+MON)/2 is actually a 97 RON My CBR600 requires a 95RON. Adding octane boosters will NOT improve performance, but will prevent damage to the engine IF the octane of the petrol is too low and results in knocking. |

Modern engines (actually ECUs) are very resilient to the Octane rating of the fuel. Knocking is almost unheard of in modern engines these days.
