^Shrewd mechanic might sound pricy when it comes to quote the re-build.
We will need to take a decision duly considering all aspects. Aargee - All the best !!

So what do you suggest if you were in this situation? Take the rebuild to someone else? I don'tve an issue asking someone else to rebuild, but the question is who is that someone else & see the following possibilities
1. He doesn't know stuff & tries to learn from my work 2. He charges about 2.5K & he's in the other side of city & is it worth just 1K to lose the old guy? 3. The new guy charges less, but does not do a quality job 4. New guy meddles with something & fixes something, takes more than 2-3 days or extend the work by a week; chalo, worst case - steals the parts!!! But do you all think this is a DAY ROBBERY? In a nut shell - Known devil is better than... is all what I can recall now.

Buddy he told me he would charge around 1.2K man, now this 2K is too much.
Are you saying 3.5K for the rebuild is fare enough? (trust me, the mech is competent enough) Ok, check this out - 6 months ago when I changed the frame, the Yamaha A.S.S charged me about 1K for the labour. Now changing the frame also involves almost the same work, except that few of the internal works are not done. I'm trying to compare with this one. @Nitin - When DTW did your work, did they assemble bolt by bolt & nut by nut? The work that I'm intending to carry out is 95% of the work done in Yamaha factory, but in this garage. Is this the kind of work done at DTWS?

Buddy, i have till now taken up 6 projects for self & close friends all executed by my Friend (I treat him as my friend & not mechanic) : 1. Engine & Cosmetic Re-Build of RX135 5-Speed 2. Engine & Cosmetic Re-Build of RX100 3. Engine Re-Build of HH Spendor 4. Engine Mod for RX135 4-Speed 5. Engine Mod for Fiero 6. Engine work & regular servicing of TVS Scooty (He doesn't do any mopeds etc, but on my special request he undertakes the job of getting my Scooty serviced) All this over a span of 3 yrs. Yes the bill was hefty, but even the discount i used to get from my Mech was sweet. Its all about the rapport you build with him, then he starts building this bike as his own. This is nothing but human relation. So the way you are talking about trust etc, please learn to trust atleast your mechanic. An analogy would be, a doctor treating you for some Infection, until you have trust in him chances are that you may not get cured at all. I feel Good Mechanics are same as those life saving doctors. My mechanic has been into this job for the last 20Yrs & his tuned RXs run in almost all the drags conducted in south india. Till date whatever have been my expectations he has surpassed it miles ahead. I wish you all the very best for your restoration & hope your Mechanic (Friend) does a wonderful job. With Regards, - Karthik..

1. He charged me for a new cylinder & used a half sleeved instead; all the more never returned my RX100's gearbox assy, clutch assy, sprockets & 2nd oversize cylinder 2. Used a low quality disk brakes due to which the plates are getting worn out in a span of 3 years & 17500 Kms 3. Charges??? Not to mention!!! its not only for deep pocket, but still never asked for discounts There's an endless list that people told me & I always believed that he would never do that to me. So much for the trust!!! My foot!!! Not to mention, this guy has been in this field since 1988 & have won several trophies with 350!!! Quote:
Over these years I've learned the hard way on whom to trust & whom not to trust by the way they speak & approach things. Look at the post above; are you justifying a 2K for a cylinder sleeving & that too without the pistons? Don't you think this is taking for a ride? Whether India or US, mechanics, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters have 99% same attitude - do good job 1% & cheat 99%. Quote:

Hey dude, just relax. Finding a good mechanic is like finding true love (Sounds fuuny, but it is ture). It will come to you some day, but you have to be patient.
Even i have been conned by number of Mechs in Mysore (Where i was intially based for my studies), but as time passed i know who is good & who is bad. If you have been struggling to find a good hearted Mech in Chennai, then probably that is not the place. You need to try else where. And i am not saying that if a Mech wins trophies, then he is good one, he will be a reputed one for sure. But you need to find a good hearted mech. And remember one thing, all good things come with a price tag. So be patient & try to explore possibilty else where if you feel nothing much is happening in Chennai. And also track record is important, i.e, how many RXs has he restored, any ongoing projects of some other customer. At my Friend's garage there are always 3-4 Rebult RXs parked permanently of customers who don't want to take it to home due to lack of parking space. Even my bike was in his garage parked for 2 months as there was some carpentary work going on in our Basement parking, giving out lot of dust. This is just my case i am discussing with you. This is how you come to know about the quality work he does. As far as 2K is concerned for sleeve job, yes it seems high, but you need to speak face to face with Mech & set your expecatations clear. If you really need quality job work on bore-kits then plz try the TVS factory (Yes they undertake even for Yamaha RX bores), PM me if you need more info on this. And yes i stick to my quote, A good hearted Mechanic is similar to a life saving doctor. Its all in the perception. You want to believe that all mechs are butchers then nobody can help you. Don't generalize all professionals buddy. And as a thumb rule a complete engine work + cosmetics would cost you minimum 40K for a quality work. So you can calculate the overall estimate & go ahead. Think positive & be optimistc.
