Thumbs up My RD350 restored....

Hey guys, WJ here, i just finished restoring my 1986 'high torque' Rajdoot Yamaha RD350,(Check the pictures below my post) and although it was a daunting task, considering i had to buy a wreck of an RD, from the police lines auction for sourcing the parts, it was a job well done, giving smiles to me as well as those who helped me through this venture!...it wasnt an easy job though, because i had to give the electronics an overhaul as they were prone to fusing, replace the HT coils, which i found out to be of 6 volts (curse that dumb mechanic) to the original 12 volt coils, and i also had to change the sprockets, as they had wore down.
Now the RD rides like new, giving me goosebumps everytime with it's powerband, clutch action, not to mention the lack of stopping power!! ...Good thing for purists, disaster for newbies!
but seriously, for me, re uniting with my RD was nothing short of being re united by a lost lover!....The feeling of gunning it in all it's six gears, the rush, the soundtrack, takes my (or anyone's) breath away!..It was like a nirvana revisited~!
Now that my bike has been fully restored, i have done some changes in it,
Firstly, i have fitted rear Gas shocks from the RE bullet, splitfire twin core ignition system, iridium plugs, as well as repairing the faulty 2t oil pump!
I do have some queries though...
1. Should i go in for an electronic CDI system?, and if i do, will the bike lose power?, (a marginal loss of power is much better than those irritating CB points)...
2. Should i invest in Disc brakes for the bike?, as the drums make you feel like you will do a HARAKIRI everytime you gun her!
DO REPLY!

This is me scratching my head in disbelief after being properly reaquinted to her!!!...

Nice job mate! Could've been a bit better on the cosmetic front through.

1. if you want a replacement for points, fix in the stock cdi(hard to find), ravi nagesh kit or even the rx/scooty pep cdi.
If you want the bike to perform very well(again depends on the state of your engine), go in the the RD Dreams digi cdi. Its quite expensive though. ive got that cdi kit running on 3 bikes and i can with confidence say that there isnt anything quite like it.

2. A disc setup is always welcome. a p220 setup will cost you about 6-7k if you are a DIY person. You need to find a good tig welder though!!

3. Please use premix and not the pump as its usually prone to failure.

4. Jet the bike properly. keep checking the spark plugs to see how its running. make sure it dosent run lean. You can use Mico W5bc or W5Rbc spark plugs as well.

5. Use a motul 800v or petronas if possible

6. Painted/powder coated cylinders usually overheat.

Why have you mounted the indicator at that level like a bullet?

Cheers!

hey, thanks bro, your help is appreciated,
1 .On the disc brake front though, i had fitted the royal enfield forks and shocks,
but it had a flipside, as the bike was very harsh going into bumps, he did fix the disc from the thunderbird, but even that didnt make much of a difference,
i guess the disc brake setup and forks from the 220 will help in damping the suspension, as well as helping in braking!

2.Will putting the CDI from the scooty/Rx lead to loss in power?, because my bike is still running on stock pistons and the engine is in it's original state, and i definately don't want a loss in power, as i am quite impressed by it's performance in it's current state? \

3.Yes i use mixture, though not very lean, as the bike smokes heavily, if mixture is lean, but yes i will check if the 2t pump is clogged, or not running properly, point taken!

4.Right now i am using Conventional Motul W50 oil, will it cause any harm?

5.Point taken i am goin get the cylinders chrome plated!

6.On the cosmetic front, i am preparing the original RD style stickering for the bike, so next time you see the pic of this bike, it's gonna be in showroom condito=ion!!

DO reply!

PS: Thanks for your help brother!

@WJ - Use a FZ16's front fork assy; the shiftover is direct fit + you get the frontal disc setup. Motul 50W is no harm.
