proton's good ??

he is talking about a tapered bend pipe which the key for performance on a REAL exp chamber

ofc i know hes talking abt tapered headers.. what i want to know is, how much difference would a regular street riding guy on a stock engine feel with a tapered vs stock header. I have ridden a RX with a calculated hand made chamber and one with a proton. I felt the proton was more street friendly! How many of us here fully know the physics of an Expansion chamber? Like i said in my earlier post, we are talking about a regular guy who is not much into mechanics but wants a fast street RX.
Proton have been in business for 18 yrs and were into racing as well and they still build chambers with headers if you provide them with values.

Look for chambers that dont use the stock bend pipe for a start. The best chambers will be custom built ones , I look at them as a work of art. If you wish to understand them start reading up on them and look up pictures on the net .
As long as the bike is for street use & not drag/dirt/rally purpose, KRP or Protons will deliver excellent performance. More than chamber, it is the carb tuning & correct jetting.

KRPs and Protons run out of steam extemely fast . They deliver initial and thats it no mid no top .

To put it in perspective i would say Rallying / Dirt bikes ( in the 2 stroke indian scene ) run porting that is pretty close to stock if not stock ports itself since they need all round usable power and not peaky motors - which is also what most people prefer on the street and what many call streetable .

Take a look at the rally pipes . If Protons or KRPs are as good as you guys claim they are then they should have been extensively used by Rallying / Off road riders or they should all be running stock bend pipes with chambers built over them.

@ Yamdoot : Ill give you a hint : With a tapered header you can modify the diameter of your header and play with the shape to give you a smoother flow into the 1st diffuser of the pipe . Something that you cannot do with you stock bend pipe .

@ Kartik & Yamdoot : Stock bend pipe with a belly and end can is a very crude pipe design and it is what people in west used to run on their street 2 strokes till the late 60's , we are now in 2010 so please keep yourselves updated folks. Whatever your porting is, a well designed chamber will ALWAYS optimize performance and power delivery. ALWAYS. And a well designed chamber/ exhaust includes a very essential part - a custom header !!!

Compression Jetting Timing Porting Piping Gearing Sprocketing is the whole marketing mix.

I do agree that a tapered header will help decrease the flow resistance of burnt mixture providing a smooth flow besides increasing the chamber volume. but here we are talking more about a common RX/ 2st biker . Anyways i am yet to come across a perfect street chamber with a custom header. Have ridden bikes with chambers from well known teams and people claiming drag timings on self made chambers, the only one that impressed me completely was the Team TVS-Suzuki Rally chamber on the Shogun.

^ you need to try out more chambers that work for your kind of porting before you form an opinion about them.

"common RX/2st biker" or not - protons / krp that you get off the shelf are crap IMHO. And even a "common RX/2st biker" who wants to go fast deserves to be pointed in the right direction .

best pipe builders are located in South India. Bangalore , Chennai and Coimbatore are filled with many pipe builders so try and get your pipes off the best pipe builders in one of these cities.

PS: I would also like to add that to see radical gains in power - porting and chamber must go hand in hand . If your going to put on a chamber you might as well give your motor a light port job and get a chamber built accordingly .

Vampire provides sound advice.

Start with the making the exhaust port larger and larger fuel jet (or raise the needle). . The gain you get will be much better than any chamber slapped on a stock bike.

Whatever you decide to so, any changes you make, watch the coloration of your spark plug carefully to see if your engine is running lean or rich. and make adjustments to the fuel. If it runs lean there is a good chance it will seize. Less fuel to the engine also means less oil.
