hey everyone Ive recently bought a Suzuki Samurai( rebored by previous owner). On the advice of a mechanic I had a new piston ring put in and also general servicing(cleaning carb, filter, oil fill etc). The bike runs smoothly and sounds awesome - no muffler tip
![]() However I do have a few questions about some further work i wanna get done on my bike. This is my first two stroke bike and I was hoping to get some help on understanding and improving it - (reliability and engine etc) 1)There is sort of kick back from the back wheel at speeds higher than 60 kmph. my mechanic says that the chain and sproket has to be changed. Will that rectify the problem 2)the crankshaft has a little bit of give(moves sideways by around 3-4mm). My mech says that i have to get a new crankshaft...problem is that the kickstart and gearshifter is welded to the engine casing and apparently he cant change the crankshaft without breaking the kick, is that true?? what is approx cost of a new crankshaft( mech says it will be around 3 grand because of new kickstart and all) also i would like to know is there anything i can do prevent overheating the bike on long trips (over 100 km) as i cant wait to hit the highways on my bike but im concerned i might harm the engine any help on this would be great ...thanks |

![]() For query no 1: Yes, the sound may be due to worn out sprokets. Sometimes jerking may be due to ply in clutch bell assembly also. Please check. For query no 2: Generally it is connected by means of some bolt (allen-key bolt). I have never come across any bike with welded grer shifter and crank kicker!!!! Please check & confirm. Yes brand new CrankShaft assembly will cost you maybe 3.5 to 4k (that was the showroom price back then). And your mech is right about this one, please change the same for higher engine reliability, make sure you change even the engine bearings, use SKF. For query no 3: Use rich settings in your carburettor (ask your mech to do that for you), use NGK iridiums plugs, better ignition, good quality & quantity of 2-T oil (If cost is not an issue, then use Fully Synthetic 2-T oil) & most important of all don't rip the bike in full throttle continuosly, especially in lower gears. Hope this was of some use.

1. Yes you need to change the chain kit. sooner the better. 2. Welding the kicker and the gear lever was a short cut way to save money on new parts. Such short cuts usually always turn out to be more expensive in the long run but its a money saver option for someone who wants to sell the bike without spending anything more on it. A new crankshaft is about 3200/-. You will also need like Karthik said , new bearings, new kicker, kick shaft, gear shifter shaft, gear lever. Take a welders opinion before your mechanic wants to break anything.

hey karthik and yamdoot thanks for the prompt replies.... your advice has really helped out
karthik what kind of synthetic 2t oil would be right for the samurai? could you gimme a few names and cost There have been quite a few threads about how much 2t oil to add to the tank..is it nessasary to do that after adding synthetic oil @Yamdoot yes sadly i had no clue about it when i got the bike...it came cheap though(8k with new mrf nylogrips) so i bought it..i figure that i will gradually gain knowledge and improve the bike as it feels superb Some of my friends 2 stroke bikes donot idle for too long without acceleration..my bike can idle on a constant beat for as long as i want...is that good or bad? does it show the carb mix is right? Im getting a new chain and sproket set for my bike though the crankshaft job will have to wait for funds...meanwhile i will try and get a few pictures of it to paste on this thread Ride safe and thanks again |

If its idling good it means the carb is well tuned. You can get a crank job done with a new connecting rod and bearings if you dont want to go for a new crank. Where are you from?

There is no need to add more 2t oil to the tank ... also with fully synth oil at rs 850 / liter, I guess u should save up and get that crank ... The Samurai was a successful, widely sold bike and the stuff should be easily available .... Also it being a 7.8 bhp machine with a top speed of 91 (or 89) kmph (As I remember from the owner's manual), torque, if I remember is 0.98 kgm ...the regular run of the mill 2T oil with JASO specs should suffice ... The samurai has good pick up in gears 1 and 4 if i remember correctly .... have a nice time with your bike ... Try getting the bike's owner's manual from the last owner ... will help a great deal in which spark plug, grade of gearbox oil and other stuff u will need ... also, which city are u in?

After 1991, the TVS-Suzuki was detuned to the 7.8 bhp VM18 carb specs. The Samurai had the same engine. So they are different bikes .... sprocketing is different too .. PS: please send the link to the Ind-Suzuki Manual ... THNX
