In Two stroke's world Gear Oil is the one which is filled near to the kicker. Engine oil is the 2T oil pumped by the Oil pump or mixed with the petrol

Hope this link will help

Two-stroke oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Motor oil, or engine oil, is an oil used for lubrication of various internal combustion engines. While the main function is to lubricate moving parts, motor oil also cleans, inhibits corrosion, improves sealing and cools the engine by carrying heat away from the moving parts.

Other non-motor oils include gear or transmission, and differentials oils. These are used in manual gearboxes and driven axles. They could include specialty uses including EP (Extreme Pressure), hypoid, and limited slip functions.
Again, they are not to be used for engine lubrication. (from yahoo answers)

[QUOTE=sanjithjoseph;727184]+100 to what you said...

sanjith,

you are wrong...

In general atleast any where in india. for bikes 2 stroke or 4 stroke..

engine oil means the lubrication oil which circulates inside engine crank case for lubricating/cooling moving engine parts like transmission gears, clutchplates, shifters, bearings etc.. which will (should) not burn inside combustion chamber.

2T oil or side oil(because 2t oil tank will be on the side of the bike) refers to auto lube oil which will lubricates the moving piston, rings, piston pin, along with cylinder and burns inside the combustion chamber along with air fuel mixture.

for Thumpers old model Bullets(cast iron engine) gear oil is diffrent from engine oil since gear box is not inbuild inside the crank case like bike engines. so gear oil will be filled seperately with different grade oil for lubricating transmission gears.

for 2 wheelers in general widely we use only two terms

Engine oil or 2t /side oil.

transmission oil, gear oil terms are only used for 4 wheelers where trasmission will be seperate like gear box, diffrential drive axel.

Hope this would clear..

Edit: if one consider only cylinder, piston, connecting rod and crankshaft alone as engine in two sroke bike... then he can surely call 2t oil as engine oil.

Correct.

Here is a brief summary in 2-strokes:
  1. 2T Oil - Used for Lubrication & is a part of combustion process. Items covered: Crank Shaft, Cylinder, Piston, Head.
  2. GB Oil - Used for Lubrication only. Items covered : Gearbox, Clutch Assembly.

Sriram has pointed out in utmost simplest way, so that even a layman can understand it. Sorry, but i have never heard of Engine Oil being referred in case of 2-strokes in India. I have no idea what terminology they use in US or UK!!! I am talking about India in general (N-E-W-S).

Yes, you are correct. Since engine oil is not burning inside the combustion chamber, we can't call a 2T oil as Engine Oil. Correct me if i am wrong.

We can never leave out the Gearbox & Clutch assembly. They are very much responsible in an overall engine as the above mentioned items for the engine to perform at its peak.

Default Thanks!

My mech used to put Veedol (it was synthetic IIRC), as I didnt know anything before joining XBhp!

Later after a lot of difficulties, found Castrol 2T, and I could feel the change! The bike felt smoother!

As soon as it finishes, trying Motul 510 (IIRC) that I have at home! Also I mix a pouch of Castrol 2T (40 ml) once in a while to the tank and check the oil flow from the oil pump once in a while, as guided by everyone, esp. the seniors here.

Thanks a lot guys!

P.S: From what I've heard, the people that use Motul (Any) swear by its performance!
