Smile My RX100.

Hola Amigos!

Yesterday I picked up a used RX100 1987 model. It s a red coloured bike and the engine is in good shape but the cosmetically the bike is in bad shape. But the whole point of getting the RX was to have the pleasure of restoring this bike into a mint bike. And nurturing him for years yes him I feel he has loads of testosterene in him so I am giving him a male charecter and I have decided to call him "MegaReX". Mega as I got him of Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine's birthday and ReX cos thats what he is and RX.And many thanks to fellow xbhpians arvindraju and psycho_98 for helping thru the whole process of hunting the bike, making decisons and all the support and time you guys spent helping me, you guys rock..Thanks \M/

This is the kind of a list of works that is needed on the bike:

He had a worn out seat with 'DHOOM' written in white and pink all across the seat which was the first part to be thrown of the bike to be replaced by a stepped seat with a black seat cover with a nice metal beading and a 'YAMAHA' screen printed at the back.

For levers the bike had a reandom set that got repalced with the classic RX levers and the front brake cable that had kinda turned into a rubber band was replaced as well and I have a working front brake now.

The gear box oil had turned a shampoo pink which was drained and refilled with Castrol CRB 20W40 and i can actually feel the bike come back to life.
  • She does nt have a wiring running thru at all and all the switches stopped working the last decade itself and needs a complete overhaul of the elctricals. This will be done as soon as my next paycheck arrives as I am broke after paying for the bike, agent commison, ownership transfer fees and the new seat and front brake overhaul.
  • The front fork seems to be extended and the rake increased by using a random set of black tubes by the previous owner and this is going next and the front fork assembly is gonna get a overhaul.
  • Chassis is gonna get painted also the crankcase covers, the bore and head have been painted with cheap silver colour that is getting all chpped of and will be painted up to quality.
  • I guess I will overhaul the engine and replace the Bore kit. And check the state of the engine bearings.
  • And paint a coat of clear coat over the existing paint job for the tank and side shields that is red with the two golden pin stripes. I really like this original faded look this has and clear coat will prevent further fading and dgradation of the paint.
All this I plan to get done in a phased manner keeping in mind budgetary constaints in a recession driven economy.

But despite all the work on the bike I am really excited and happy to have my new steed. The bike just takes off like a rocket after about 2 k RPM with a loud banshee howl and that is so very soul satisfying for me. It s a really special and scary feeling when the bike takes off in that manner.

PS: @mods - I know there are quite a few RX threads here in the Thumpers, Two Stroke And Exotics section but I did not feel it was right to kinda hijack another members thread and start talking about my biuke there. And was not sure which section to start the thread and figured that this was the apt section.

@all - Pics are comming shortly, I dont get online from home and the first pics are stuck on the GF's cam. So I will kinda start posting the pics at every stage of the restore process.

Thank you Aryan for the approval and thanks every one for the wishes.

@Shivanshu - I always wanted a 86/87 RX and finally managed to get one.

@Arvindraju - Yes even I feel going for a new bore kit makes sense need you and psycho_98 to point me to a right mechanic for a precise engine overhaul. And the bike is a HE arvind. We are giving him a male charecter.

I will be posting pics at every stage of the restoration process.

So far the costs have been as follows:

Gear Box Oil: Castrol CRB 20W40 1 Litre - Rs 225
Clutch and Front Brake Levers - Rs 75
Rubber covers for the levers - Rs 65
Front Brake Cable - Rs 65
Adjuster - Rs 10
New Seat - Rs 450
Labour Rs 40
-------------------
Total Rs 930.
