Default 7 Days in the Land of Culture, Tradition and Fun - Goa (1712 Kms)

1712.5 Kms. That's what the trip meter reads as yet another journey comes to an end. For almost a year I was away from touring.. reasons being family responsibilities, office leaves and what not. So much that people actually started asking have I quit biking for good?! But it was about time I break the shackles and be on a good long ride. Goa, being my native place, is visited atleast twice a year be it by bike, car or bus but I didn't get a chance to go there for almost two years. Last time I had been to Goa was in Jan 2011 - http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/tourer/1...karnataka.html

So Goa was the first name that popped up in my mind when I had 7 days to ride in my hand. I shared my plan with fellow xBhpian and very good friend of mine, Lalit and he was eager to join in too. We had few other names in mind too like Hampi, Dandeli, Jog Falls, Couple of Wildlife sanctuaries. But unfortunately our office leaves couldn't be adjusted and i had ride to do it as a solo ride.

Solo rides have their own benefits - plans remain flexible and any last minute changes can be done without much difficulty, So I started off from home with lots of options and ride plans in my mind but ended up spending the entire week in Goa itself. Can't help it, the place is so beautiful that you hardly feel like going anywhere else.

There won't be a detailed log this time and will keep it more like a photo feature and video logs. I have recorded tonnes of content using my Sony camera and the GoPro.

I'll update the thread as and when I get free time.

    Thank you!

Hey ketan, you have some nice pictures there

I'm planning to do a Goa ride on the 25th of December with a pillion on my Classic 500. Could you help me out with the best route to take from Mumbai?
Its going to be the 1st time that I'm going to be riding around 600kms at a stretch(done 400kms before) so I want to play it safe and take NH-4. Also I have 1-2 cars which will be doing the journey with me.
We plan to leave at 6am. Will that be good enough?

Hey sohil surely Ketan would help you out ...but if you wanna have a riding experience It has to be the NH17 that you ride on...NH4 is more of a straight patch...and you would end up with a fully turned throttle for miles together....!! But the NH-17 is more of technical riding with good straight patches and a lot of twists and turns of the ghat...!! Some spectacular views and riding experience of the Kashedi ghat...parshuram lote ghat....its a real good experience...!!
Another thing is that you say you have a few cars traveling with you....on the NH4 buddy the cars cannot resist speeds below 120kmph....4lane and straight...is tempting...but for a two wheeler to ride on 120-130kmph constant is a little cumbersome...!!
Its my take on the riding route....!!

@ketan - I also live in Mumbai and Goa is my native. i just rode solo to Goa on 9th Dec 2012 and came back on the 13th. How was your ride.

@sohil - it has to be NH 17. No two ways about it. its an experience you will cherish. Just make sure you check the road conditions in Maharashtra thread before you ride.
Just flick the switch and twist my wrist
The beast comes alive, bringing me back to life
A tap to shift and flick of the wrist
The beast takes flight bringing me back to life
Kill the silence, tear apart the dark
The beast rips the road, hell yeah, i feel alive.

    Hey Sohil, Thanks a lot!

Well there are two routes to reach Goa as you must be aware, NH4 and NH17. NH4 is safer you said and faster too while NH17 is more engaging and fun, comparatively slightly riskier and time consuming too. If you opt for NH4, you can either exit NH4 at Nipani, take the right turn towards Ajara, Uttur, Gadhinglaj and after crossing Amboli ghat you'll end up at Sawantwadi from where you can continue towards Goa. Once you cross the Toll booth before Nipani on NH4, there'll be a slight uphill climb, keep an eye on the right hand side for Hotel Kaveri. The right turn and the exit is just next to this hotel. Once you take the turn, keep riding towards Amboli ghat, keep asking villagers for directions if you get confused. Be a little careful in Amboli ghat since in some parts of the ghat road resurfacing work is under progress.

If you opt for NH17, it would be pretty straight forward journey all the way till Goa. Just be careful once you are close to Sawantwadi. The new 4 lane Sawantwadi by pass is under construction and it's better to avoid it till it's done. Use the usual old NH17 that goes through Sawantwadi. I took the new under construction route by mistake and it was dusty, full of diversion, speed brakes and no sign posting. And that too after dark. Was quite a painful experience.

I would recommend you to go to Goa via NH17 and return via NH4 so that you get to enjoy both the highways.

5.30/6.00am is perfect time to start the ride

Have a safe ride, especially if you opt for NH17 in either of the journeys.

Hey hi, Ride was excellent as always. Goa is a place that's always in party mood and December is probably the best time to be there.

Guys trust me, I really want to take NH-17 but the people traveling by car don't wanna take a risk. Also, I haven't done more than 400kms in one day so I am a little short on confidence. I have heard NH-17 is best during the rainy season. Might attempt it then

@ketan: Thanks for the route info man, its going to help a lot. May be next time I go to Goa, I'll take NH-17. And yes, if there is anything more that you know about the route please enlighten me
I hope you post your experience of the trip before monday night, I can learn something from it before I leave on tuesday

@padfootmoony: Thanks man, I know about the long never ending route and trust me the speed issue was the 1st thing that popped up in my head. My friends are too worried about my safety, they are going to stick around no matter what speed I maintain. 100-120 is something my 500cc can manage

@JayD: I think NH-4 will be the best memory for me no matter how boring it will be. (Its my 1st trip to Goa, EVER. I'm going for Sunburn! And the best, my girlfriend is going to ride with me)
    Can't ask for more :P
