Default Pune - Pondicherry, Solo on Baby Duke !

It all started when a dear childhood friend of mine randomly planned a trip to Chennai to meet other childhood friends over a long weekend.

Got a text message "Bombay-Chennai flight tickets tonight at 3k, game?"
Replied : "You, and a random trip, stop kidding !"
Then she forwarded me the booking text message, and I replied "I'll ride to Chennai, meet you there !!!"

I frantically opened up my laptop and started looking up the route and then realized that my bike wasn’t prepared for this mega ride !
It was a moment of realization and inception, the seed was planted in my head, I had to do this !
That weekend I did extensive research on pre-prep for such long rides and read-up all the touring blogs (1000kms+) to get the first hand experience of seasoned riders who have attempted and successfully executed such long rides !

Finally prepared a list of things to-buy :
    1) Tank Bag
    2) Tail Bag
    3) Rain Suit
    4) BackPack Rain Covers
    5) Puncture Repair Kit
    6) Foot Pump
    7) Surgical Gloves
    8) Garbage Bags

Also searched for a couple of stores retailing travel gear and got some amazing advice at the Outdoor Travel Gear Store in Pune.
As it was raining heavily, my main concern was to get rain-proof bags, which turned out to be an over-expectation/lack of experience. No-bag in whatsoever price range will not be able to provide full water-proofing.(It reminded me of my LS2 jacket which came with the 100% water-proof tag)

Decided to do some IJT(Indian Jugaad Technique) and went straight to a local bag shop and bought a large good-quality laptop bag and a small side bag, then asked the shopkeeper to make some changes.

Initially it was difficult to make him understand my requirements, but then I took him to my bike(Duke200) and gave him a demonstration that how this can be fastened on the rear and the tank. He was excited and so was I.
Finally after 3 hours of trial & error, the bags were a perfect fit, though I was a little sceptical about the durability, but had no issues during the entire trip.

So the check list was almost complete but couldn’t find a decent sized foot pump, so skipped that keeping fingers-crossed.

Called up my friends in B’lore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Nashik & Mumbai and told them about the ride I’ve planned coming weekend. And they called me names, to be decent ,crazy, retard, mad, stupid and other adjectives in hindi and English. So I though, I’ll surprise them by sending actual pictures when enroute, and it worked !

    Initial Plan :

    Day 1 : Pune - B’lore
    Day 2 : B’lore – Chennai
    Day 3 : Chennai – Pondi
    Day 4 : Pondi – Chennai – Hyderabad
    Day 5 : Hyderabad – Nashik
    Day 6 : Nashik – Mumbai
    Day 7 : Mumbai – Pune

    Actual Executed :

    Day 1 : Pune - B’lore
    Day 2 : B’lore – Chennai - Pondi
    Day 3 : Pondi – Chennai
    Day 4 : Chennai – B’lore
    Day 5 : B’lore – Pune

Good logs bring in more ....

Getting angry at somebody is the same as getting angry with a bike that just won't go. You should stop and start thinking.
A good mechanic will let you watch even without charging you for it. | Riding faster than everyone else only guarantees you’ll ride alone.

It is funny to know that we've been imitated and copied so well
and surprising when we notice our mistakes are copied as well.

Everything went smooth, but the crosswinds...(Done Indeed)
Highways are really a delight in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu especially..(But the straights...err...boring)

Supposedly Day 1 – But “it happened”
It was raining on and off in Pune from past couple of weeks, and we were deprived of the sunlight for quite a long time now. So I was prepared for heavy rains (literally).

Packed all my clothes (still a little damp) in big poly bags and organized them in the tail bag and covered it with the rain cover, also tied it with a bungee, to protect the raincover from sticking on to someone’s windscreen at high speeds.

In the tank bag were a couple of nutri bars, a pack of cookies, gums, mints, smokes, ipod, mobile, wallet, bike papers, extra key, water bottle, Gatorade, sunglasses, chain lube, garbage bags, cleaning cloth. All of these in 3 compartments and the small items were difficult to find when needed during the ride with gloves on.

So I was all ready to leave by the dawn break and set the alarm for 3:30 am.(Too ambitious)

Thought I’ll recharge my prepaid card online, as I was too occupied the whole day preparing for the ride. Opened the website, fed in the mobile and card numbers and just before clicking proceed, I thought I’ll check the card details just in case.

Took out my wallet and then “it happened”, I started laughing in mixed emotions as I was not sure what to feel.
“My one and only debit card was missing”

It wasn’t very difficult to remember where I’d left it, as that day I used it twice, once at an ATM and the second time at a shop on JM Road from where I bought my rain suit and covers. Ran to the drawing room and picked up the bag of the shop, BOOM no contact details mentioned there.

Google came to my rescue and found the contact details, but no answer on the landline, simply meant “shop closed”. Tried calling on the mobile number and after trying the second time I got through to a gentleman:-

Me : Sir, I bought a rain suit from your shop today evening and I forgot my SBI Visa Debit Card in the name ‘Sanchit Arora’, can I come and collect it now???
Gentleman : The shop is closed, too late. Come tomorrow morning with your ID Proof and take it. HUNG UP !!!

It took him less than 5 seconds to say that and he hung up on my ‘Road Trip’

For a moment everything stopped around me, it was completely silent, then I called him again & after 30 seconds of ringing the Gentleman not so gently crushed my hopes of leaving the next morning !!!

It was time to celebrate the first and the last mistake of the entire trip, I promised myself & popped a Tuborg(soda : no commercial advt of alcoholic beverages)

The next morning I collected my card and came home planning if I could take a detour from my plan and explore, who was I kidding? I was riding alone and could go anywhere I wanted, but a little knowledge and information about the route always helps..(little if you are good at understanding GPS)
So came home, searched about Mysore, Ooty, Munnar, Kodai, Rameshwaram and had designs on my mind, that too vivid ones !!

    Day 1 : Pune - B’lore ( Friday 2nd Aug ’13)

Finally the plan came to life with the alarm screaming into the silence at 3:30 am, got up, cross checked every item, took a leisurely bath and treated myself with the morning cuppa and was good to go by 4:30 am.

This was the hardest part of the entire trip, saddling up! Took me almost 30 minutes to load up the tail bag, tank bag and then gear up. Was good to go by 5 am and had already chosen the exit from the city to the highway.

It was raining heavily when I left and had poor visibility till the Sunrise, rode carefully and the first 50 kms were enough to put me in the tight spot. Cleaning the visor or riding with lid open, settling down with the new rainsuit over the riding jacket and knee guards. But gained more confidence when the dim sun light turned the sky in azure and then a beautiful blue.

It was pouring continuously for the first 100 kms till the bad stretch of the road towards Satara and then the irritating drizzle that sticks on to the visor and you have to clean it every other minute, used my gloves to clean it every time and then the beautiful 6 lane highway welcomed me with open arms with no rains after Karad.

I thought I’ll try and cover the most of clear weather as I don’t know what the Gods of rains have in store for me, so twisted the throttle and was easily cruising around 120kmph, with no stress whatsoever on the engine.

I still haven’t checked the top speed of my bike as I just finished the break-in 5 days back and didn’t get any opportunity to rev the hell out of the 200. This was the time, saw a clear and dry patch of the road and zoooomed, saw the speed at 135 and then the Legendary Rev Limiter came to life and with an abrupt and irritating cut off, I was sent back to 130...

I realised, no point risking with the sudden jerk so kept my cool and kept the rev happy Duke at 110-120 kmph. It was smooth as silk and then the crosswinds, playing with me, the wind blast was strong enough to pull me to the crouching position to maintain the speed, occasionally tried to maxx the rpm out on straights which still got cut off at 137 kmph.

Stopped for the first fuel break near Kagal, got an average of around 30kmpl. Not bad at all. I told myself !

Didn’t take any picture then as I was looking for something more interesting than a straight road, so stopped finally 101kms before belgaum, took a leak and stuffed a Snicker followed with Gatorade and water, clicked a pic and sent to the group.(Phew! Finally they realized I wasn’t kidding)

As soon as I realized I was bored, came the Nipani ghat section. Just a couple of turns and that was it for the rest of the ride. Just straights and straights and more boring straights.

    (Realized that I've entered Karnataka)

2 more fuel breaks, where first I gulped a nariyal pani and a south Indian delight in the second. Saw the first sign of the banglore city around 4:15, took a small break, asked for the route to Hebbal(where I was supposed to crash at a friends place) took a lifetime to reach there and was finally greeted with a familiar face at around 5:40pm.

    Thanx Tushar..

Range depends on the riding style...
8 Ltrs lasted 240-250 kms when ridden in between 80-100 kmph and lasted 200-210 kms when rode hard continuously between 110-130 kmph...

Default Day 2: Pune - Pondicherry, Solo on Baby Duke !

    Day 1 : An evening in B'lore...

Finally got out of the un-breathable rain suit and my friend was surprised to see me remove so many layers of clothing and stuff(as she called it).

Took a hot water shower and was ready to meet another friend as I wouldn't be able to spend desired time with all of them in one evening.

After witnessing the terrific traffic of B’lore, I let my baby rest and took an auto to MG Road to meet a dear friend.(good decision)

Strolled around a little and had an amazing time at Mojo’s and Corner House and came back to Hebbal and the celebration continued.

Meeting a friend after school, almost 10 years, you don’t realize how time flies. Beautiful memories, catching up and it was 2 am by then (yawn).

    Day 2 : B’lore – Madras - Pondi ( Saturday 3rd Aug ’13)

Woke up at 8am and realized my Doctor friend is an amazing host. Piping hot filter coffee and the traditional breakfast served already !
Delighted yet lazy me chatting with the friend while she was getting ready to save the world, left around 10.

Now, I had 2 choices to exit B’lore. One through KR Puram, Old Madras Highway or go through the entire city and take the Vellore route.
I opted for first, and later regretted.

The plan was to reach Chennai by 2:30, have lunch at friends place and then leave for Pondi by 4pm, so that we can enjoy the scenic beauty of ECR.

But it got delayed by 2 hours. I was aware of the protests happening around Andhra, but didn’t realize that the Chittoor was in Andhra. I was a long queue of trucks on the side and thought it must be a railway crossing, but it seemed like never ending and reached a junction where the trees were cut and put on the road, burning.

I was shocked, as I went further, saw black smoke rising from the middle of the road and a foul smell. Burning rubber and log of woods to hold the traffic. Usually I am brave, but someone else’s territory and such a sensitive matter, I slowed down, and reached the juncture and killed the engine.

All sorts of thoughts crossing my mind then, what if they don’t let me pass? Alternate route? Should I ask? I don’t know the language either. Go back to B’lore and take the vellore route? What about pondi?

Suddenly a policemen on the bike honked and the protesters removed the stones and let him pass, he crossed over, stopped there, spoke to a couple of people and then was the hand gesture for 2 wheelers. Yayy, they let us pass.

I thought of clicking some pictures, but was too scared for any reaction in such matters. Went on riding and realised the “khat khat” from the chain. Time to lube.
Quick stop, couple of awkward movements in different positions and I was good to go, without any clue of what was waiting ahead.

Saw atleast 50 roadblocks, burning wood logs and rubber tyres of all shapes and sizes. Was not allowed to cross a couple of them till the “dhol” was on whilst children and people clothed in white where playing cricket in the middle of the road.

Took a fuel stop as I was worried if the petrol pumps would close or will be anytime. Found a HP pump and a CCD together and made a quick stop. Went to CCD to take a leak and then pour some cold liquid in me, it was closed but witnessing me and my bike all geared up, they made an exception but was asked to leave in a jiffy.

Exit Andhra - Enter Tamil Nadu

Finally reached Chennai, was calling it madras because of the sign in Andhra.

Was looking for the direction towards Guindy, my friend told me to ask and then come to Adyar, if I get lost I should reach Adyar bus depot and he’ll come to fetch me there.

Entered Chennai at around 3:15 after taking a right turn from beneath a flyover, which said Airport and Guindy towards the right.

Followed and asked for the directions and finally reached friends place without disturbing him. Was looking for his apartment in Adyar when suddenly he popped out of nowhere on the road and stopped me. I was surprised and happy to see him. I was right in front of his apartment and he was coming out for a smoke.

Waited for the radiator fan to stop, which took a while, atleast 500ml of water and a smoke. Then finally I was out of my alienware into just boxers, on his bed upside down in his cool room.
Took a quick bath, had lunch alone, as he had already killed it waiting for me and the finally left for Pondi at 5:30pm.

My friend dressed in slippers, shorts and a t-shirt was too careless as a pillion, I insisted him to take his helmet.
ECR : full of barricades till Mahabalipuram and it was dark already. Took a small break as he complained of butt ache, in the meanwhile I tanked up and there after a couple of breaks and finally reached Pondi at 8:30pm.

    The Amazing Filter Coffee

He has been to pondi a couple of times before and recently with the friend I mentioned (who did this inception), so he took us directly to Auroville for a night stay, which didn’t give me the feel of riding 1400kms to Pondi . So went to Rocky beach and then found a guest house (Shri Aurobindo Ashram affiliated).

Parked the bike and the food hunt was on, found a nice place called Cafe Qualithe and then the celebration.
I slept early that night and woke up late the next morning.
