    Tour d Uttrakhand

An unusual day, doing the usual work, making an electrical drawing on Auto Cad in my office; cursing the client; trying hard to zoom in and zoom out, and there rang my Motorola kept on the window sill for better reception of signals because of work space being in a basement. Picked the cellphone and the screen displayed xBhpian Vinay Delhi. And he was up with a weekend ride plan to Nainital and Binsar. Was really happy to know, that if I want to ride down this weekend to hills, which I love to do the most in my life, then I have a good company. So, was only the call from Vinay that made the day unusual? Kind-of. But the biking adrenal inside me started revving the throttle that time itself.

The next target was to find a kick ass excuse, for the boss for leave. A day spent doing usual work and at the same time thinking of what to say to the boss regarding my leave application. And came up with a brilliant idea the next day. When I told my boss that a close friend of mine is suffering from cancer in Chennai is counting his last days on this planet, and I need to see him the last time before he leaves all of us, he agreed to grant me three days off from work. And believe me, there is no such friend of mine in Chennai. It was just hypothetical. The next thing to do was to arrange enough cash for petrol, food and hotel expense. Went to the ATM nearby during the lunch time from my office in Saket and was happy to see the mini statement of my account, like a kid getting a new toy. Called Vinay to give him confirmation from my side, that I was 100% in for the ride, screw everything else; and he asked me to be in front of Akshardham Temple at 04:00 AM. And the lazy ass of mine was cursing Vinay for that time schedule.

Day before the ride [17th Nov. 13]: GEARS admin Aaron Cardozo came all the way from Goa for his work scheduled in New Delhi, and carried Rynox Nommad V2 saddlebags for me from there, and I rushed to the IGI T3 Airport to pick him up. Also met GEARS admin Carlton. Being a Gear head, its always great meeting them. Didnt dine with them that night as I was suppose to grab enough sleep before the ride. So, the sexy new saddle bags were packed with all the stuff required for the ride and still had enough space to keep the famous hand made candles from Nainital, while returning back from the ride.

Day 1 [18th Nov. 13]: My Motorola was happy enough to wake me up at 03:15 AM in the morning, as on usual days, it is hard for him to motivate my bums to leave the bed for the Gym. And at 04:00 AM I was fitting my saddlebags on the bike and put on the knee/shin guards, and there I left from Gurgaon with dogs running behind my bike barking as if some theft has come in the society. Wished good morning to the guard who opened the gate of the locality for me, and told him that I am going to Nainital for weekend and will be back in three days. And off on one of my favorite highways in India New Delhi Gurgaon expressway enjoyed the view of the Indigo landing at T3, and damn it was so close to me. And after crossing Lajpat Nagar, entered another great highway, which I hate DND Flyway. And I hate it as even bikers are supposed to pay the toll there. And removing gloves, paying 12 bucks and putting the gloves back again is an irritating task. Reached Akshardham Metro station by 04:35 AM and Vinay with his Hero Hunk was waiting for the riders. Then came to know about the other riders who are going to accompany us are Akash Rathi, the owner of bikerscart.com and Mohit Pal, from xBhp HQ. I was aware of Akash, as I met him around two weeks back at the dhabha. Mohit Pal was already there on my facebook friend list, but never met him before that day. And after waiting 10 minutes, there came the other two riders. Spent 15 minutes in fitting all the bags, the tripod and the air pump using n number of bunggy chords. And all this packing was done by Akash and Mohit both still wearing balaclavas, and I was still wondering who the hell is this Pal and how does he look. But, screw it. And we went behind the shrubs to pee and then ignited our bikes while Pal was still trying hard to kick start his KariKarizma. And when he did, he realized that the blow horn and the headlamps were not working, though they were functional when they arrive the start point. And we left from Akshardham Temple to Uttrakhand, all excited, fired up from inside and it was still dark. Riding on and on and on enjoying the dusk and then the sun rise and we halted at McDonals in Gajraulla and realized that its still not 11:00 AM and we all hate what McDonalds serve in their breakfast menu. Took a U-turn and stopped at Bikanerwala just 200M before McDonalds. And that was the time when I saw Mohits actual face when he removed his balaclava. After enjoyed Parathas and curd with coffee, Mohit searching for Lassi in the Menu. But unfortunately, Bikanerwalas were not ready with it. We left for Binsar.

Riding at over 100 Kmph, Pal saw a Castrol Bike center, where it tookalmost three to four hours in a small repair of Pals Karizma. Theunavailability of a spare part, made Pal to go to Muradabad around 20 Kms awayto get the spares required. While Vinay, Akash and I were enjoying discussingbikes under the shade of a tree on the folding bed of the tyre puncture shopnearby, playing with the canon and also experienced a tyre burst of a TataIndica just in front of us on the highway. Helped the family inside that car,who was scared like anything because of that burst. After Pals Karizma wasready to roll again on the roads

we started riding again to our destination, that was Binsar. Akash was the lead rider, while I was the drag rider. Roads near Rampur were really bad, with deadly potholes as deep as 1 feet or more. After suffering that 30 Km longstretch full of potholes, we entered Uttrakhand finally, and the roads were in mint condition. It was almost dawn when we reached Haldwani and bye-passed Nainital, where we were suppose to go initially. Enjoying the ride on the hills and stopped in between to enjoy the view when Akash decided to remove the air filter of his white Yamaha FZ16, which looks that of a stunners bike from the front He was happy, as his bike started to sound like a Duke. We again started and stopped at Lohali for dinner, Mohit didn't get to dring lassi here as well. Almora was 30 Kms further. It was already dark enough to ride down to Binsar that day itself, and decided to ride down till Almora. We rode till Almora, following an Alto for better visibility of the road And reached Almora in another hour. Searched for a cheap and good hotel for the stay, and Ambassador hotel it was. Tired, happy and everyone stretching our body to relax down our muscles after riding a total of around 450 Kms. After discussing about the ride we did and the next days program, Akash convinced everyone to get up at 06:00. And none of us had enough energy to argue about the time.

Day 2 [19thNov. 13]:To hell with what Akashsaid the previous night, and got up at 08:00 in the morning. Afterenjoying the hot water bath, went down to checkout from the hotel and Akashasked about the best places to see in and around Almora and Binsar. The hotelowner told him to visit the Birthi water fall, around 140 Kms away from Binsar. And Akash went mad that time, trying convincing all of us to ride down tillBirthi after we will be done exploring Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary.

We rode till the junction from where the Binsar is 11 Kms up hills. Did some cornering near around, clicked some photographs. Paid 200 bucks each for the entry ticket to Binsar. On way Vinay and I stopped to click some great view when we realized close to our right hand side, a leopard that tried to chase us down and we started our bikes and ran like scared idiots. And what a ride it was till the top most point of that hill. Approx. 7,200 M of altitude it was, said Pals Casio on his wrist. Parked our bikes and started walking down the sanctuary Akash was expecting some leopards down the sanctuary with a camera, feeling like he is the part of Man vs Wild on Nat Geo. Though Akash failed in finding even a single leopard in the sanctuary. We kicked off the ride to go back, and on was stopped to enjoy Maggie tea and bingo's And rode down to the entrance point of the Binsar, where we shell 800 bucks in total for this greatexperience. Sat down there deciding what to do next. Akash was fired up for the ride to Birthi, and Mohit Pal also agreed to join him. Vinay is man of his words and didnt want break the promises he did to his girlfriend. He was suppose to be in Delhi by next day evening. So he decided not to go beyond Binsar, but to head back to Almora for the night stay. And he left. I didn't want to let him go alone to Delhi the next day, but was more excited for the ride to Birthi. Sorry Vinay

The road to Birthi from Binsar was simply awesome, with awesome tar and white marking along the edge of it. And on way, Pals Karizmas headlamp again fused. It was already dark, and on way stopped for Karizmas headlamp repair. Enquired about the route and destination, and Birthi was still far far away from where we were. The mechanic suggested us to stay at Chaukory and to continue the ride the next day. He also suggested us to be aware of leopard and other animals on way. Then Akash and mohit decided to ride while honking all the time to scare the leopards off. I was the lead rider then, because of better headlamps So, ride to and stay in Chaukory was decided and we started our ride again. Stayed at Himshikhar Hotel in Choukory. An awesome hotel with an awesome view around it. Had dinner, with Mohits disappointed face, as he didn't get lassi here as well. After few minutes, either Akash or Mohit broke the charger of my Motorola, while I was busy dumping in the washroom. This time it was really very hard for Akash to sleep with his butts on the mattress, as he confessed that due to excessive riding, he got some boils on his butts. Mohit and I were RoFLing when he confessed that. And off to sleep again

Cool Re: Four of us went to Binsar and Munsyari, Uttrakhand

Day 3 [20thNov. 13]:The cold breeze from theopen window next morning was my alarm, and that was the best alarm in my entirelife. An awesome feel, that I can’t describe. Again we didn’t give a damn towhat Akash said the previous night. got up at around 07:30 ordered maggi in thebreakfast and moved up to the reception to checkout. Again ignited our bikes, put the saddle bags on the bike and we were all fired up again to explore newplaces. And off we were on one of the best quality tar. Stopped after 50 Kms toclick some great photos of awesome views and again enjoyed some cornering. Thatwas the time when Akash finally used his tripod for the first time since thestart of the ride. Akash even made some great videos using his SLR as a GoPro,fitted on his chest tied by ropes. And you can’t even imagine how happy he was,and decided that moment only that there is no need of buying a GoPro now. Itwas a sunny day and we were enjoying the ride like hell and the flowing rivernext to the road…. And we reached Thal. Akash trying to withdraw some cash fromthe only SBI ATM in a radius of 80 Kms. Enjoyed some momos and mountain dew andMunsyari was still 75 Kms further. Had a good halt there. And Mohit decided tohead back to Delhi. It was completely an unplanned and hectic ride. We wererunning out of cash. That was the first time when I opened Google Maps app onmy Moto and saw the current location then. And realized that we were quiteclose to Nepal border and Munsyari was the last reachable point by road ofUttrakhand. And again we all got fired up from inside and decided to head toMunsyari

And on way saw many good points to click photographs and we captured all the great points. Met a local guy on way. He was riding an RE classic, and was riding very fast and safe on hills as well. According to him, we were riding quite slow, and he overtook Mohit at almost 90 Kmph and flew away. The ride was getting tough5, the weather was going bad, it started raining and it became difficult at the corners to take turns as all the indented turns were of concrete because of the water falls during the rainy season. And we saw the Birthi Water fall on the hill just opposite to us. And at an altitude of approx. 9000, we met another xBhpian – Anurag Pal. And yes, it was the same mental dis-order that even Anurag had – Bikism, that made us meet up hill at almost the last point of Uttrakhand. From there we rode back to Thal together, when Akash gave another shot to ATM to withdraw cash, and this time he was successful. Had some more of Chinese food with few mountain dews and again left for Almora. After riding for almost 2 hrs. continuously, it was dark and it started raining. Luckily, there were few shops and restaurants close by. The shopkeepers were kind enough to provide us sacs and plastics to cover our luggage and bike. Mohit cooked maggi for us in a restaurant, as he wasn’t satisfied with taste of maggis he had so far during the ride. I am sure he must have cooked in a damn pissed mood. Omelets after maggi were our dinner that day. Mohit decided not to ask for lassi this time. And he didn’t. It stopped raining. Ignited our bikes and left for our destination. After riding 3 hrs. continuously, we reached Almora. It was already 00:15, and was hard to find any hotel open. After struggling for almost 45 minutes, guys at Ranjna Hotel were helpful. Hotel room on the first floor and Akash couldn’t feel his butts while climbing up the stairs, he said. Akash lied upside down on his bed to have some sleep. Again Akash trying to convince us, that we must get up at 06:00 in the morning. Showed him the middle fingers and slept. And believe me, it was one of the best sound sleeps I had in my entire life.

    Day 4 [21st
Nov. 13]: Time unknown. My Moto was out of battery, and there wasn't any clock as well in the room where I enjoyed my sleep. Somehow managed to grab Mohit’s micro USB charger and put my phone on and it was 09:35. Went to the room where Akash and Mohit were snoring. And I shouted the time with a very sleepy voice. And both of them jumped off from the bed in another 3 seconds, as if my time warning was some earthquake warning. Brushed our teeth, washed our face and we went down to checkout without taking bath. Riding long, early with taking bath is one heck of the most crapiest feel in the world. Fit our saddle bags on our machines, and left for breakfast search. Found a decent breakfast point, had chole bhature, parathas, and this time also Mohit didn’t get Lassi to drink. I am sure his lassi luck was hard during the whole ride. We were about the start our ride, and we met Anurag Pal again with his brother. His brother was the pillion rider. Anurag rode all the time with a pillion rider. Hats-off to you brother. He is one of the matured riders I ever met till then. We left together from Almora for New Delhi. On way stopped at a river side to enjoy some sun bath 9 as we came without taking bath) and some nice clean flowing water. Had good time then, clicking pictures. And Akash will irritate you all the time by asking you to take a good picture of him, just like a girl. We started our ride again and crossed Nainital and Lake there. Wow beautiful it looked and awesome Tar it was. As we were running out of time, I couldn’t buy the hand made candles from there; and my half empty saddles remained half empty all the time. Next we stopped at Haldwani, and searched for some alternate route, as we wanted to avoid the bad patch of 30 Kms near Rampur. Luckily I spoke some guard, who was guarding a factory nearby. He was really helpful in guiding us the alternate route. We took that route and rode continuously for next 2 hrs. On was we stopped at Sagar Ratna to snack a bit and to stretch our body. Gajraula was 30 Kms further. Left for Gajraula McDonalds, and ate as if we were hungry for past 10 days. Rested there till the closing time. New Delhi was 120 Kms away. We left for our final destination. Rode continuously. By the time we were close to Delhi, we were damn tired, and the moment we entered Delhi, there was a different kind of energy that started flowing within us. Delhi roads looked damn beautiful at night as they are so properly lit. stopped at a point from where all three of us had to go to separate locations. It was 01:30 and we were doing some chit-chat about the ride. That time we were tired, happy, and above all, we were fearless. Hugged and we all went to our respective homes. Had an awesome sound sleep of my life ever.
