If your car is not emitting blue smoke, I can put new life into its engine, which you can feel with every passing kilometre and with every gear shift," asserts citybased inventor Hemant Tamhane of Tamhane Garage.


The designer of what he calls the V-V Engine Management System, Tamhane has been working on the spark-plug and the fuelpump, two vital organs of the automobile engine, since 1984 and has come up with 'thermodynamic spark-plugs' and 'engine management'. He has also applied for patents for these. He takes pride in the fact that his achievement is of a purely mechanical nature, as opposed to electronic.

Says Tamhane, "The idea came to me in 1984 and, from 1986, I started experimenting with the use of the thermal ionising process. By 1990, I had tested 1,000 sparkplugs devised by me on aircooled, water-cooled, two-stroke and four-stroke engines."

Explaining the salient feature of the spark-plug thus improvised by him, Tamhane says, "In any sparkplug, the spark travels in a perfectly vertical way from the electrode. After my processing, it travels like a disc, thus giving 3.5 per cent greater thermal efficiency."

The upshot, he claims, is that the engine gains in BHP and total combustion is ensured. He has tested these thermodynamic spark-plugs on all kinds of vehicles and in the Himalayan Rally of 1988.

"Nearly 1,500 vehicles, ranging from the good old Premier Padmini to the Maruti Esteem, have been fitted with these sparkplugs and all my customers are highly satisfied with the result," he says, adding, "I call them 'BHPboosters', because they give greater power, reduce pollution and offer economy."

Tamhane recently subjected two Premier Padmini cars to engine management, one with a floor gear-shift and the other, an older model, with the gear-shift attached to the steering column. Both the cars had air-conditioners and, claims Tamhane, both registered a fuel efficiency of 20 km per litre of petrol.

"This is engine management for the 'single barrel technology'. Lesser pollution and greater economy and power are achieved by adjusting the flow of petrol by modifying the fuel-pump," explains Tamhane.

Asked about the modification, he says, "The variation in the return spring is reduced, so that a constant pressure of fuel is put on the carburettor. As for the carburettor, the travel of the needle-pin in it is reduced by 50 per cent, so that no unburned fuel can travel to the engine. The air-fuel ratio of the petrol engine stays between 13.6:1 and 14.2:1, so that the finest relation of CO, HC and NOx is seen in the exhaust. Simply put, my engine management consists of carburettor 25 per cent, fuel-pump 25 per cent and the spark-plug 50 per cent."

An architect by training, Tamhane's predilection for automobiles seems to be hereditary. His father had opened a garage near the now defunct Bhanuvilas cinema-house in Narayan Peth way back in 1940, which was later taken over by Tamhane.

An expedition (Pune to Milan, Italy) on the old Lambretta scooter to visit the company's facility there further fired his imagination. "You may not believe this, but we were offered employment by the company. We refused, saying that even if it were a small pin that we tried to invent, we would do so in our own country," recalls Tamhane.

Going by the testimonials he has received from his happy customers, including the managing director of Kirloskar Copeland, Tamhane seems to have been successful in his aim.

Thanx for the info sanju, anyone has any idea of the cost and work involved? does the bike need to be taken to his place for the work or can the work be done anywhere in India(with some help from Tamhane ofcourse)?

If one uses a normal (zero resistance) wire than the current one going from the cdi to the spark plug, you will get a better spark and a positive increase in mileage as well as performace.

the draw backs are increased RF produtcion, which will create havoc if you ride your bike close to a TV set!
