Default Suzuki GS150R vs Honda Unicorn Dazzler Vs. Hero Xtreme

    Hi,

I am 5.8', lean built, 28 yrs old and an ardent hill biker..
I have been riding in Uttarakhand for 3 yrs and have now shifted base to Sikkim for next 2-3 yrs atleast.

Iam looking to buy a 150 cc bike for hill driving which includes long (150 km ) to small rides (60 kms) per day on mainly steep roads in not very good conditions.. My requirements are

    1. Good FE (45 +)
    2. Comfortable riding (i have slight back problem)
    3. Cost (max 85k,.. ideally 80k)
    4. Good pickup and cornering capabilities required for hill driving

I have zeroed down on the following 3 models but is open to any other suggestions also...

    1. Suzuki GS105r
    2. Honda Unicorn Dazzler
    3. Hero Xtreme
    4. Yamaha FZS

Pls suggest which will be a better bike for my requirements..

    Thanks
    Manish Kumar

Did you consider the Hero Impulse? Suggesting since the road conditions, as you say, are not very good.

Alternately, if you are looking to have fun on the hills, RTR160 and FZ-(16/S) should be your picks.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

But heard that impulse gives an average of 35-40kmpl. said my Hero Mech and agent.

You can also have a look at P200NS.
It gives me a mileage of 43+ kmpl in City!! ,
Also it has good brakes, As well as the power needed..

But demerits i feel it will have in the hilly areas - Bad low end torque, and the Eurogrip tyres.

Relationships change, evolve, and it goes deep.
Only thing I can say - "The storm is coming"

Xtreme. It is powerful than Unicorn, better mileage figures too.Its got a really comfortable position, seen many mechanic guys use,as they have to cover 400 kms per day.So fine for touring.

Zeroing down, I would suggest you FZ16- Its damn comfortable, and corners great. But you will compromise on milage bit. And the mid and high range is not good. Alternatively, it could be Hero Impulse/GS150. I am not quoting Dazzler, due to its TWISTERish looks and COST factor(Unicorn would be more practical).
Any bikes other than these, wont be comfortable. And as you have back pain, look no further....test ride these 3 and decide...

I don't know why you guys get such pathetic mileage. I get 40+ practically everywhere. And for those who do not know, I have a P220.

And getting 45+ on hilly roads is not such a big deal. The bike will always give you better FE when it is properly warmed up and considering you will be riding considerable distances in the hills with no city-like stop-go traffic, I see no reason why 45kmpl+ should be difficult on any Hero/Honda/Suzuki/Bajaj/TVS 150/160cc air-cooled bike. Something like a Suzuki GS150R will even return 55-60kmpl in the hills.

Same thoughts here!! My 223cc also delivers an average between 41-45 kmpl always (city-highway). There are people who never trust my words, but I don't give a rat's behind to them. I never understand how a P150 delivers 40 kmpl! Simply insane. Wrong choice of bike for the kind of riding the biker expects.

    1. Good FE (45 +) [You can disregard the FZ then since of the bikes you listed the FZ will probably give you something around 40, definitely NOT 45 +]
    2. Comfortable riding (i have slight back problem) [All the bikes you listed are fairly comfortable]
    3. Cost (max 85k,.. ideally 80k) [Most 150cc will come in this bracket, no worries here]
    4. Good pickup and cornering capabilities required for hill driving [FZ is the BEST in this category]

I have zeroed down on the following 3 [4?] models but is open to any other suggestions also...

    1. Suzuki GS105r
    2. Honda Unicorn Dazzler
    3. Hero Xtreme
    4. Yamaha FZS

All the bikes that you mentioned are very decent and to list the pros and cons of each will lend more perspective:

FZ PROS: Would have been the best for you, great handler, corners like a King and is good enough for short highway stints of around 150km (your requirement)
FZ CONS: Low fuel efficiency, be assured that you WILL NOT get more than 40kmpl in the hills, you also mentioned BAD ROADS, the rim bending problem of the FZ is very well documented (head over to ownership section or goto google images to see pics of bent rims) and if you are going to be riding the FZ, sooner or later you will end up with a flat tyre at the wrong place.

Dazzler/Xtreme: With the updated features of Xtreme, Dazzler and Xtreme are both very similar bikes and can be considered equal for your requirements.

PROS Dazzler : Upright stance of dazzler with slightly wide handle bars make this a very spirited bike. Also good for your back. Both will give you an FE of more than 45kmpl CONFIRMED, with dazzler you might even touch 55kmpl. Both are robust bikes but expect some console thrashing in dazzler on bad roads (will be smooth as butter on flat roads, ZERO vibrations, don't know about Xtreme). The Dazzler, at least, has EXCELLENT NISSIN brakes in rear tyre (superior braking than FZ). Rear mono shock makes it more stable than the Xtreme if not more comfortable.

PROS Xtreme: Has a kick start if relying on just the battery in the hilly cold gives you chills! (pun :P ) also it has 18 inch wheels as opposed to 17 of dazzler so that's a plus point for your requirements (bad roads). Both these points a plus over the Dazzler. The Dazzler however is lighter by some 5 kgs, makes a difference in the upslopes of the hills!

CONS: Forget about leaning your ass since the foot pegs in Dazzler scrape the ground fairly easily (I love that btw ). This is a very minor CON according to me since people generally tend to ride safe when commuting, more so in the hills. You may not like the head light intensity either (for both bikes). Also the colour options of the Xtreme are pretty sad according to me but that's personal taste. In the end it is up to your choice on looks colours graphics etc.

    GS150r:
PROS: Will be reliable and stable on the highway and give you good fuel efficiency if you stick to that 6th gear. Will be close to impossible sticking to 6th in the hills though since the last is an over drive gear, best used for trundling along on level road, not hauling ass in the up slopes of a hill.
CONS: Is heavy and not really suited for cornering, is not a very agile handler. Not the best machine for the hills. Also where are you planning to get it serviced? Have got a service station nearby?

Finally what antz suggested is a good option, the impulse. But do you like the looks of it?

My suggestion is go either for the Xtreme or the Dazzler, both suit your requirements perfectly. But I will also suggest the RTR (slight over budget?), if you are willing to live with the viby engine then owning an RTR can be absolutely rewarding, especially when playing in the hills. That exhaust will be pure symphony echoing from the cliff walls...!!

*Did not suggest anything more than 150cc since that's what you want and your budget is 80K with tax, P200NS will be better for you but the price is almost 10K over your budget and some people say that low end torque is less, dont know where that comes from...* Hope this helps!
