Default Help required: Choosing a bike b/w FZ25 & Dominar

    Hello Guys,

First thing first. Thank you mods for accepting me as a member.

I have never been a bike guy in the past, though I was dreaming in my schooldays about owning RX135, which never happened for various reasons.

My interest has been in cars all these while, but now, after seeing the launch of FZ25, the Yamaha fan in me came alive and I am now itching to own a bike and ride it too. Though my interest was only in getting a FZ25 and did not bother considering other bikes, my reading of various reviews of Dominar 400 has made me consider this also. Needless to say that I am confused.

I fully understand that, these two bikes are not the same and may appeal different kind of bikers, but again it is a my personal choice that I have short listed only these two bikes given the minimal cost differences between them and also has not considered any other bike due to budget constraints, I can only stretch for a Non-ABS version of Dominor 400.

    Some relevant details:

My height & weight: 5 ft 9 inch and 80+ kgs
Purpose: I would use the bike for office commute for most of the days (I may still use car in between), which means that I would be driving within Bangalore city for about 40 kms a day and also want to go for weekend rides.

I have done some basic comparison of the two bikes, only on the parameters which mattered to me. Again, I quote, I am not comparing these bikes per se, but this is done to help me in choosing the RIGHT BIKE FOR ME. So, Yamaha folks & Bajaj boys, don't pounce on me .

I feel, FZ25 would handle best and easy to maneuver in the city traffic, but don't know if it makes a good bike for touring purposes. Please help me here.

Also, whenever I discuss with any of my friends (people owning Pulsars) on Bajaj, I hear some or the other quality issues. This was my main concern on the Dominar 400. Please help me here too.

I am planning to take test rides of these two bikes (back to back) once FZ25 is available with the dealers.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

You have waited all these years to buy a bike and you like the Yamaha. Then don't bother about logical/ practical decisions. Just go with your heart!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Thanks The Monk. I guess this is the simplistic & sort of the best advice you have given.

    Hello KK_HM,

I was in the same position as yours some time back, I was waiting for the RIGHT BIKE for ME! I had a confusion between Himalayan, Dominar, Mojo for good 3 months but my heart was craving for Himalayan, went ahead and bought it. I am so happy with it & thankfully, there has been no major issues so far with the bike. (there were issues with clutch in assembly previous ones).

Another thing I realized is, when I bought the Himalayan, my heart accepted him not just for the awesome experiences I am going to have but also accepted him for the tantrums (issues) of his I have to tolerate and be patient with. Lol. Sounds like I am married to my bike.

Feels like you are in the same position as I was. I am so in agreement with what Monk has said. Go for it. Plus practically, traveling for 40 kms (Whitefield, perhaps? ) and weekend tours, FZ25 will give you both. Especially in the city, 43kmpl is like brilliant. Go ahead - 'Yes Yamaha'

    Cheers!

My opinion will be go for dominar instead of fz25 being an avid yamaha lover . I wont gi for fz 25 because it is too much overpriced has around 20 bhp . Air cooled 5 speed gearbox with not even abs as an option. Dominar in the same hand is more value for money as compared to fz25 . I dont think quality of dominar 400 is a problem because almost all parts of the bike is of ktm . So there is not much of bajaj in it .so in terms of quality it will be way better than the pulsars .

Thank you for all the replies.

I took a short ride of Dominar yesterday and I was quite impressed by the linear power delivery. I sensed there is enough torque at each gear shifts which helps you to push the bike to red line. I might do one more long test ride in the next week.

I also felt the weight of the bike can be managed in the city, but it would be cumbersome in stop and go traffic during peak traffic.

My wife felt pillion comfort to be good, buy she said seats are hard. Is there any way to make the seat bit soft?

After some thinking, I am leaning over Dominar 400 for two main reasons:

    - Absence of ABS in FZ25
    - Dominar is a next level bike. Even if I go for FZ25 now I would want to go for a bigger bike in 2 to 3 years, which I could avoide with Dominar.

Let me see how it goes. Waiting to ride FZ25.

Same thing happened to me with Dominar...I was not able to manage the weight of the bike.. 😐
Otherwise, the bike is more worth for its price...

If you can manage the weight of the Dominar, go for it, as it provides most bang for the buck. For hard seats, there are a lot of aftermarket options available. You can get a extra layer of foam added as a permanent solution, or for very long rides you can get a gel seat, which you can strap on top of your original seat whenever you go on a long tour.

I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

I can give you some insight about dominar as per my research(reading impressions and reviews). Lets start with why you should buy it:
    1. It's a great touring bike. Wider handles provide comfort and confidence to cruise at higher speeds. It gear ratio abit different as 1st and 2nd gear are short while 3rd 4th and 5th are stretched. Also 6th great provide smooth cruising speeds.
    2. Slipper Clutch: Price at which it is launched I'd never thought they will provide a slipper clutch but man it's a blessing.
    3. Led Headlights: Completely visible. Drl for daylight and low beam high beam setting.
    4. Dual channel abs /dual disc brake: 320 front and 230 back / abs
    5. Diavel tail lights : Its more than enough to lure me.
    now why you shouldn't
    1. tank capacity: It's tank capacity is 13 litres which is on the okayish side until you see what it competition offers and you feel like it's a puny little tank. Also as we are talking about tank, since it's not made of metal magnetic tank bags cannot be used hence you have to satisfy with tail bags.
    2. Engine : Some reviewers wrote about a buzzy noise kicking in last gear which can be heard significantly(Not sure please do confirm it in other reviews)
    3. Component are abit to exposed: For example the pillion seat is removable to keep accessories although the space is similar to what other bikes offer but it also has wires for tail Completely visible with no cover .Rear brake reservior also abit out but not that big of a deal. Same is the case with abs.
4.( It's my personal opinion) It's like a value for money product where you get everything but still it lack a bit in all.

Also for seat being uncomfortable you can buy aftermarket seat pad/comfort pads for bike but I'm not pretty sure there are for pillion but you can always check. Happy riding and hope you get the right ride. 😊

    Update

Thanks for all guys who chipped in with suggestions. After a lot of thinking, I have booked Dominar yesterday at Popular Bajaj, Bangalore and delivery is expected within two weeks time.

Now, coming to reason for choosing Dominar without even test riding the FZ25 goes like this:

    1. First and foremost, Dominar is a next segment bike and with an investment of around 30k more I would be getting this which I can keep for a few years without changing, as I don't change bike often.

    2. Initially I was only considering Non ABS version due to cost constraints, but after a very useful and forceful (in a lighter way) tips from the members here and close pals, I felt it is necessary to have ABS, so FZ25 was ruled out.

Will update further as it goes.
