Default Shillong Road Safety Awareness Campaign 2011

“SLEEP DEPRIVATION & SUBSTANCE ABUSE are the major causes of accidents. Be aware!”

“Spare parts for humans are not as original as those for cars!”

“Hug your kids at home, but belt them in the car!”

************************************************** *

Why should you be concerned?
“...too often, road safety is treated as a transportation issue, not a public health issue, and road traffic injuries are called accidents, though most could be prevented. As a result, many countries put far less effort into understanding and preventing road-traffic injuries than they do into understanding and preventing diseases that do less harm.” — Dr. Lee Jong Wook, Director General, World Health Organisation.

The latest world-wide statistics released by International Road Federation (IRF) reveal that 1,19,860 people are killed in road accidents every year in India. This is the highest in the world, even more than China, which had always registered the maximum number of road fatalities till 2005 (Source: Economic Times) On an average about 4.5 lakhs of people are injured in road accidents every year in India.

According to latest statistics of East Khasi Hills District, between January 2010 to mid-April 2011, there has been 188 reported road accident cases resulting in 36 deaths leaving 255 people injured. The main causes of the accidents are over speeding and negligence on the drivers’ path like “diverted attention while driving”, reckless overtaking, etc. Shillong being a hill station with narrow lane could least afford this, apart from casualties, road accidents incurs huge loss to the state and businesses alike, as it paralyses traffic and blocks the transportation of essential goods and imports and exports of the state. This is therefore an issue which cannot be neglected because “WE THE PEOPLE”, whether a pedestrian, driver or rider; are responsible for our roads and our city.

We therefore request you to

Be Aware, Be Safer!

When:
Date & time: 7th May 2011.
Flag off venue: will be notified.

What:

A motorcyclist’s rally on Road Safety Awareness for 2011 with RERAM and STP.

Where:
The rally will be taken across Shillong town through major traffic junctions with the objective of creating awareness to the motorists on safe riding/driving and other road safety tips.

How:
Rallyist (riders and pillions) will be distributing flyers containing important motorist tips, carry placard containing road safety slogans and finally a thanksgiving cum get-together. Not just that! Our Media Partners will also spread the message of Road Safety through Radio, Local Television and News paper Print.

Why:
Because we want to make Shillong a lesser accident-prone city. Because we want to educate the Motorists and perhaps the pedestrians alike on following road safety measures. Or Maybe there are too many idiots on the road who needs to be educated and informed. The more the idiots on the road the higher our chances of "Never Making it Back Home"!
View few of the kinds of idiots on the road as categories by BeIdiotSafe : click here

Who are most likely participating:

Default Kudos!

Kudos Again Meghalaya xBhp Guys & Gals! Keep it up!

As far as I understand, the number of bikes for the above rally will be limited. Therefore, we can use the helmets and protective gears of the other bikes that are not participating. This is just a suggestion from my side.

With Regards & Best of Luck!

Event Report:

As scheduled, the event started with a short speech and introduction by respected Shri M. Kharkhrang, Superintendent of Police (City) and respected Shri H.G. Lyngdoh, Addl. Supdt. of Police (City). At 10am the rally was flagged off by the Supdt. of Police from the Parking Lot (near District Transport Office). All throughtout the rally ASP led us on the white Pulsar and escorted by the Flying Squads. The routes covered were Barik-Rilbong-Mawlai-Jaiaw-Police Bazar- Malki-Laitumkhrah-Fire Brigade-Nongthymmai-Sawlad-Lawusip-Lapalang-Rynjah-Nongrim-Firebrigade-Laitumkhrah-Dhankheti-Malki and back to Laban Sports Club which took us about 2.5 hours. About 25 bikes and 50 participants including members of xBhp, STP & SSR took part in the rally to spread the message of Road Safety. However, unlike the last 2010 Road Safety Rally, the Royal Enfield Riders, who were supposed to join us on 15 bullets, could not make it due to some unavoidable circumstances.

2011 Road Safety Rally was a different experience as we could observe the curiosity and interest of the public and motorists particularly. It was inspiring to see our ASP himself taking an active participation and distributing the flyers to the motorists. Flyers were distributed at various traffic junctions like Mawlai, Motphran, Police Bazar, Laitumkhrah, Dhankheti, Rynjah, etc. where the participants also interacted with few motorists. During one such interaction, a driver pointed out that “some drivers are unnecessarily using the emergency left-right signals and blowing of horn”. He also pointed out about the misinterpretation of the “right turn signal” as an “overtake signal” by most motorists which at many times have led to accidents and suggested that drivers should be more careful about it.

Later, at Laban Sports Club, the participants also received few minutes training on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) by the EMRI-108 EMT Staff. CPR is a life saving technique whereby oxygen is pumped around the body using a combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths. It is useful in many emergencies, including heart attack, vehicular accidents and near drowning where the victim’s heart beat stops.
Finally, the event concluded with the refreshments and a short thanksgiving to all the organizers, sponsors and media partners before Mother Nature showered its blessings upon us through heavy rainfall.

On behalf of the Meghalaya xBhp Group, I would therefore like to thank
1. Shri M. Kharkhrang, Superintendent of Police (City) for being present to flag off the Road Safety Rally.
2. Shri Herbert G. Lyngdoh, Addl. Superintendent of Police (City) for his inspiring activeness to lead the rally and the Flying Squads for their valuable service as ever.
3. Our Sponsors for their support viz. Lafarge Mining Umiam Pvt. Ltd., D.H. Royal Cars, Rani Motors, Modrina Auto Enterprises, Eastern Panorama, Stanley Roy, Highland Studio and P. Marbaniang Service Station.
4. Our Media Partners: RedFM 93.5, PCN and Meghalaya Times
5. The Staff of the EMRI-108 for the valuable life saving training.
6. Our xBhpian members for their active participation in preparing all the placards, flyers, banners, photography, videography etc. viz. Benny, Conrad, Rupert, Nanz, Pinku, Naylin, Ru, Dhan, Mani, Emmanuel, Shanky, Sev, Badap, Neville, Gaurav, Jaskaran, Daniel Pearl, Mrinul, Joseph, Rohil, Raul and others.
7. And finally the SSR bikers for their support.
