Our cause is not to make the world a safer place. I would have loved to have that as our cause but it is beyond our capacity to educate, teach, convince etc. Our cause is to be safe ourselves. Riders who think alike (like you) join . Thos who dont think alike ( like many other smurfers here) dont join. You can try convincing but soon it turns into an argument and you find yourself not riding but arguing. As to your sentence in bold : have you ever been forced to comply to xBHPs riding rules ? No ! But you still chose to cause you value the sanity of the arguments when one speaks for gears and safety. There is no force to comply with here..a mere option i would say ...'If you want to ride with us, value your life..if you dont fine by us..good luck and ride safe' is all the gear and safety norms here say. Nothing more should be construed out of this rule. The rule is not made to police riders and to force them into believing safety. The rule is in place to make our bunch of rides casualty free. By merely using safety gear we are not on any higher moral grounds to claim to be in a position to tell others to use gear or convince them about it on the world wide web. Your approach of first convincing new riders about safety is fine and dandy to me..only it leaves you arguing with too many ppl at once ! rofl !

. The person who was supposed to deliver the oil is in Kolhapur at the moment. I have asked him to arrange for the delivery of the same at my residence by tomorrow morning.I need oil too...my bike has ridden well beyond its change interval.

@ROCKRZ
You have raised a valid point about costs involved in getting safety gear. I understand budget constraints. You could try the following: 1. Helmet - choose one that is snug fit. Brand is secondary. 2. Skating knee and elbow guards - 400-500+ and beyond 3. Simple leather gloves - 150-200 4. Army boots - Rs.300-600 from army surplus stores Obviously, better riding gear is .. well better and more expensive, but these are not bad either. At least they'll get you started. I've had falls with (2) and (3) and I can tell you they are effective; may be not as much as things which are 5 times its value, but almost 80% there. So, they are definitely not bad options. It is a general habit to improve on gear over time. But to be honest, there is no practical 'safest' option, nor is there a limit to how much one could go on pampering one self with safety gear in an effort to improve personal safety. Eg: Most people have a 5k-6k riding jacket. These jackets don't come with a back protector. Something that is pretty vital safety wise. Without this, the jacket only protects elbows, shoulders and abrasion against the surface. There still is a chance of injury. It's the same case with gloves. Most of these 'riding' gloves (esp. the cheaper indian alternative) have jazzy knuckle protectors, but aren't the best at protecting the palm or end up being poor on stitch quality. What I'm trying to convey here is that, regardless of what one wears, the will always be some area that can be improved and some items missed. So, it'll be a very subjective view of drawing a line to say one level of protection is adequate while something else isn't. Another point I want to draw here is that safety is really in the 'mind' and not just in the riding gear one wears. Riding gear is only there to support you. Safety in essence is knowing what you can do safely in the context of the equipment, gear and skills you have. You aren't required to wear safety gear all the time. Sometimes it won't make sense either. Eg: I wouldn't wear a jacket if I had to go to the sabzi mandi to buy vegetables. But then I'd not indulge in any entertaining riding either. There is always a chance of being hit by things that aren't in your control. But that chance is almost the same with any thing else too like crossing the road. It's all about weighing pros/cons and drawing a like somewhere about what you feel is safe enough for you. Also remember that jeans isn't really all that protective. Jeans/denim tears really easily against abrasion. Try leather. Great abrasion resistance and last years and years.

what i deduce from this discussion is that i am going for a minimum of a good quality riding jacket with elbow guards, gloves with ample knuckle protection and only then will i be riding for long distances again
![]() by the way an off topic question... where is the thread for safety gear???
