You did a 200 Brevet on a Fixie. That would have been suicide!
Yes Snob Roadies is the name of our group, coz we too think the same. But we are welcoming of all bikes.

I did ride the very first TFN in 2008. Back then I was an Empty-Beer . Did it on my Trek 3700 & in Jan bought my first roadbike the Saronni.

Yes the 200 on a fixe might seem too much but it's mighty fun & actually quite less stressing esp on a flat road such as that one. The only real ascent on that road is near Vasai which we refer to Pimple Hill. . But this ride was nothing compared to what I did a week back before this 200!! I can vividly remember that excruciating ride... I'll definitely dig it up, it was really an epic ride.

This was actually a 180odd ride. from electronics city to Nandi & back with a lunch stopover at my friends' place. ride back from his house was another recorded as another ride.

This ride I cannot ever forget. While my friend was also on a Fixe his, ratio was much more friendly than my 52-17. By the time I reached the top I thought my legs will explode!

    Yes, probably.

I normally read his ride reports from the TfN. Incredible that he manages to ride and blog daily in those gruelling conditions!

Wonder where the TS has disappeared This was about him getting a new road bike and now...

even I am not fittest rider at all, a little extra pounds of fat

but now I agree that bike does not contribute 100% but partly to avg speed...

so I withdrew from my plan to participate in 19 March brevet in Mumbai...

I think lot of practice needed from my side so I am fit enough to achieve at least 20km/hr (that is +4-5km/hr jump !!! ) avg speed on my current bike...

on second thoughts... I wanted to get rid of my 13-14 year old normal bike "Avon Wildfire"

would prefer to "donate" needy one...

does anyone know about institution who does these things like "donating old/used bike to needy one" in Mumbai...

There is this friend of mine who took up cycling quite some time after me. But the cycling bug bit him hard and he has been at it like a Pitbull. He keeps asking me to join him on a ride and i keep declining He is now too fast for me! This guy started off riding an MTB and clocking serious miles on it, finally he upgraded to a Roadbike and his speeds have gone further north since!

He is obsessed with Strava and beating people on as many segments as he can manage. Today he shared a ride with me in which he hit 31kmph average on a 60km ride. This is his Holi Ride - Bike Ride Profile | Morning Ride - HOLI - Day Ride to IG with RD. near Gurgaon | Times and Records | Strava

When it comes to buying a road bike, there are many things you would have to keep in mind.

Just read the things to know before buying a bicycle below, they will help you buy a new bicycle!

    Decide on a budget:

Before going ahead and settling on a bicycle, consider a budget that you are willing to spend on. Once the budget is fixed, other things will fall in place. Also, ensure to keep a 10% flexibility.

    Purpose:

The next question you need to ask yourself is, how much will you be cycling on a weekly or monthly basis?

What is the purpose of buying a bicycle. Fitness, commute, training? If you have the answer to these question, move on to the next step.

    The right type of bicycle:

There are hundreds of bicycle brands available and choosing the right one can be difficult. Once you have decided on you budget and purpose, you can filter down to the type of bike.

If your budget is below INR 30000 and your goal is to get fit, commute or light touring, then an MTB or a Hybrid is what you should be looking at.

Wondering what MTB or Hybrid bikes are?

    Read on!

Majorly, there are three types of bicycles

    1. Roadbike

    2. Hybrid

    3 .Mountain bike

There are also commuter bikes, fat bikes and foldable bikes that you can consider looking at.

    Roadbike:

If you’re looking to race or get into long distance cycling, a road bike is a good idea. These bikes are sleek and fast. If you can handle speed, have good handling skills and have a higher budget, a road bike is good.

Note: A simple Roadbike will cost you at least INR 30000. There are a few brands that will offer you a Roadbike below the above figure, but we advice to keep away. They won’t last you long and won’t offer you comfort or better durability.

Think of a Tata Nano or a Maruti 800 for that matter.

Also, if you’re a newbie and still have a budget, we advise you start from the bottom.

Get a Mountain Bike first and build your way up.

    Disc brakes:

Planning to ride longer or just within the city, make one thing clear. You don’t need disc brakes! While many might disagree, for city riding or fitness, bicycles with V-brakes are good enough. However, if you do get a bike with disc brakes and go on longer rides, be ready to slow down and lag behind the pack.

Also, disc brakes will require more attention and regular maintenance. A good marketing gimmick newbies usually fall far.

    Frame:

Do not underestimate the importance of a bicycle frame. Just like the components and wheels a frame is equally vital. It is the foundation of your bicycle. Ensure to get the right frame as it may feel uncomfortable while cycling. If you are looking for a bicycle to commute, consider to go for a frame that carries the weight of your feet and bottom, and not your hands. Even the frame material makes a huge impact on your ride.

On the overall, there are three types of frames:

    Steel frames:-

Steel frames have been used for centuries by bicycle manufacturers. This material is durable, affordable but heavy.

    Aluminium frame:

Today, these frames form the major chunk of the bicycle industry. Aluminium frames are a bit more expensive than steel frame, are lighter and do not rust.

    Hope this helps.
