    Default Cycle Restoration

    Hello All
I am new to xBhp bicycle forum, something brought me here.
I am from New Delhi, 25 years old, riding motorized two % 4 wheeler since 2008~9 but riding cycle since 3 but lost my interest in pedaling after high school. I still have my 28 years old Hero cycle with untouched, un-rusted condition and still shining in its original chrome. I remember the time when I use to ride it in our colony with my friends thinking myself top of the world. Ahem ahem.. I have those memories, everyone have those kind of childhood memories.. You can relate

The good thing is I still have that kid in myself and would love to ride cycle on roads, may be to commute office. The bug has already bitten me and I would like to restore my cycle which I bought in 2009 mainly for PCM tuition classes purpose. Later I got moved to hostel which made the cycle rust and dirty. In 2015 I tried to restore it but again got busy with college and internship. But now, I have moved back to my home and got a permanent job in Delhi itself, so planning to restore my Suncross Stratus for fun or may be for a functional purpose. Professionally I am Aeronautical Engineer and have access to variety of tools and machine setups, still I need forum member's help.

In 2015, I completely dissembled my cycle and repainted it with primer and black paint which started to peel off, Installed rear Shimano derailleur which brought problems and I was not happy with the overall performance. Everything was lightly greased with correct viscosity but still something was missing. Actually It has manufacturing defect either at axle or cone/cup bearings. Here it is :-

    Now,
    1. I want to replace cup/cone bearing with regular ball bearings or cartridge bearing. I never liked those cup/cone set and always use to wonder if they can be replaced by regular bearing? I didn't knew what size to choose or what to ask for!
Can I get a bearing which Can be lightly hammered inside hub on both sides and on both wheels? That would be great.

    2. Stock cycle was with no derailleur, only single cog back at rear hub and at flywheel. I installed 7-speed cog at rear with shimano derailleur but this makes the chain always slip at front flywheel because of lateral movement of chain. How can I overcome this problem? Either installing front derailleur to hold the chain, or installing front derailleur with 3 speed -cog flywheel?

    3. I am thinking to remove the rims, remove the spokes myself and then pasting carbon fibre-print vinyl over them and reinstalling the spokes. Good Idea?

powerShift: read about integrated and internal headset for your reference. these aren't direct fit to the frame you have as it needs some serious machining on the frame and not worth the effort. for cleaner and easier maintenance and installation of headset, you can try going threadless. but that would take you to upgrade your fork too. at the time when you plan to upgrade your suspension forks, you can try this out too. till then, enjoy your ride as is.

powerShift: did you upgrade chain to 7 speed along with cassette? if no, your chain needs upgrade as 7 speed can bent sideways to compensate the misalignment among chainring and rear cogs. installing front derailleur and triple chainring would be add on but not the solution of current problem.

powerShift: IMHO, its not worth the effort and time that you are going to put it in. just imagine rim brake pad loosing its place and damaging sticker. if you anyway want to go ahead with this idea, make sure you use hot air to paste vinyl. spoke binding is something that is best if left to professional if you are targeting long rides. loose spokes have ability to turn a good ride into nightmare.
