DS - Agree to most of your pointers but this one. Try following all rules, 100% for one day. I commute 48 kms to office daily that includes only 5-6 kms of highway, rest city. I just follow a few rules like "not cutting lanes" and "maintaining speeds within 50-55 kmph" within city limits. You know what, this leads to lesser braking, lesser gearshifts and I actually reach office earlier. Contrary to belief I save around 5-8 mins if I don't ride like an @$$hole.

There are plenty of days I follow traffic rules to the tee. But its no secret that I am compelled to break them even if for avoiding something or in preventive avoidance ever so often in our country.

DS - You simply stop in order to let any pedestrian cross the road. (man/wild).

Easy in the city, A MUST at zebra crossings... Not so much when your're touring at 80+ on the fast lane. Here the element of surprise is a big factor and changing lanes is almost a must... tell me you haven't at all faced this? I stay in the outskirts of Bangalore and travel city, ring road, outside industrial areas and out of station factories on a regular basis, find idiots wildly running across a permanent thing most of the times and find it really hard to completely halt everytime someone wants to cross the road... there's a kind of adaptive jig that happens in India... like a friendly traffic vs pedestrians battle... both need numbers to win... more the traffic - pedestrians wait, more pedestrians - traffic waits.

Moreover its not like everyone clearly indicates and crosses the road here (if they do i'd be following rules 100%)... many times they are in doubt themselves (because they cross in wrong zones) so again its relative... exact situation you simply stop to let anyone cross like you say, yes... "obviously", who wants to run them over?

DS - We already have many laws in place. We don't need more! How many of us (leave normal commuters) know all about traffic rules and more importantly, "right of way"?

Are these rules even drafted and made current to today's problems and circumstances is my question? I say this while following traffic rules... you'll see me giving way to crossing pedestrians most times but again... not even you in my opinion can safely say that you've been always 100% following lane discipline in India... If you have... dude... then what can I say? #legend. Simple question - Slow truck at 30 on the fast lane (simple indian example, they do that to avoid overhanging trees and cyclists on the left)... Do you always honk and wait for him to come to your left? ... Absolutely always?

Rules are indeed a necessity to be followed while riding but it won't hurt if we losen up a bit and try to enjoy are bike to the fullest!

If your rear brakes are powerful use them first and then continue with disc for added braking. This is what I do . I use the front discs only at stop and go traffics.
Don't mind mate but relying only on your rear brake ain't good. I had an experience once. A dumb aunty came right infront of me whn I ws riding at 60kmph, then applied only rear brakes, disc got locked and just peeled off a few mm's of rubber off my rear tyre. That rear tyre skid and I was about to fall off but was saved due to engine braking.
So you might wanna rely on your rear brakes cautiously.

If you're an avid rider, you must have already learned the art of using your brakes (both front and rear) judiciously. If not, you may go through this link and try to shape up your braking skills accordingly. Ride safe.

Yes, that IS the point! Preventive avoidance is one and doing the same causing inconvenience to others is another, don't you agree?

True. But nobody would listen if you hit someone on the fast lane/mid lane/slow lane due to THEIR jaywalking on the road, right? But I agree there have been some real shitty scary moments for me too.

              hey Vykier

so you may call me an Idiot but i'd rather bank on common sense here sometimes than simply follow an inadequate rulebook. But again, drawing a line for oneself is something everyone (especially someone like me) ought to do, for in our country, there is definite catastrophe beyond it.
@dnewguy For drifting practice etc = Empty Playground or field. For wheelies use abandoned roads/old unused roads or best join a legitimate stunting club. Look and ask around the forum, i'm sure you'll find fellows doing it the right way.
yeah kindly excuse me if its s not a line but a circle for me "everything Outside the circle of safety that is of Others and mine is Expendable !!
minor temporary inconvenience to others........ i can live with that....... just kidding.
last couple of days i really tried keeping myself in check........ although it does feels nice for reasons i cant fathom when u follow rules 100% but as i said earlier............ its hard.
in delhi the traffic doesnt allow you to go beyond 35kph if u wanna overtake from right Everytime. i dont do it everytime and dangerously in the thick of traffic but only while night riding and within comfortable speeds.

Only last night when i was riding on the far left of road up a fly over in the city....this "Idiot" tempo came up behind me and kept honking i didnt get it why so i got a little bit more towards Left.....but he kept pressing on his horn........all the way down the fly over. it turns out he wanted me to move Right and let Him Pass. i was really pissed by now and wanted to get back to his drivers side but i just swallowed my pride and calmed myself chanting "comeown good rider.......be cool - be cool"

then again the part about the skipping red lights at night well i dont know........as i see it if the roads are clear and i see no one around [ trust me i slow down to at least 2nd gear to take a quick look at even minor signals i see no point of waiting for the next 2 minutes just because "im Supposed to Act that way" isnt that simply bending backwards just for the sake of 'Social Obedience' ?? and who knows that while crossing at green some rowdy idiot isnt gonna ram into me------ wouldnt i curse myself more to have crossed when the path was Clear and signal Red ??
thats just my take on things.

P.S :- no one replied on this earlier query.......pls its not a rhetorical Q.

"Man detained for blindly following traffic rules in Delhi"

New Delhi. An unidentified 40-year-old male has been detained by Delhi police for suspicious behavior after he was caught following all the traffic rules on the road in the national capital. This is the rarest of the rare behaviors witnessed on Delhi roads, authorities confirm.

Addressing a press conference traffic inspector Mr. Hafta Ram gave a detailed account of how the “suspect” was nabbed, “I was driving home after duty in my civilian clothes when I saw this car performing strange antics on the road. The driver was driving in a proper lane, he was giving indicator while turning and as well as while changing lanes, and surprisingly he gave correct indication each time!”

A high alert has been sounded by the Delhi Traffic Police after this incident shocked the department

“Not only this, whenever the traffic lights turned red, he stopped at the faded zebra crossings to let the pedestrians, who were already crossing the road even when the traffic light was green, cross the road. And to top it all, he was well within the speed limit even on an empty stretch of road,” he added.
Hafta Ram claimed that such behavior was highly uncommon in Delhi so he stopped the “suspect” for questioning. Even though Hafta was in civilian clothes and demanded to check the papers, the “suspect” didn’t make any phone call to anybody.
“He didn’t even mention about his father, or about his mother-in-law, not even once!” a visibly shocked Hafta Ram recounted the vivid details to the reporters, “At this point, I got suspicious that this guy must have got something to hide, and detained him to investigate this matter further.”
While police is still interrogating the “offender”, sources confirm that the department was more concerned about the “offence” than the “offender”.
A constable, on the condition of anonymity, told Faking News, “What will happen to us if everyone starts following traffic rules? I will have to start withdrawing money from my salary account after all these years to pay for my expenses!”

While the common man was desperate to find out who among them had become so uncommon, political parties, desperate to get away from the daily dose of scams, have jumped on this opportunity to take the common man’s attention away from corruption.
Congress General Secretary, Mr. Rahul Gandhi said, “99 % of the people are still breaking traffic rules, 1 % have somehow learned them. We blame internet for it as we have ensured nobody in India teaches traffic rules properly to people, so they must have learned them through some website. I will request Sibal ji to block some more websites to sort out this problem.”
BJP, meanwhile, has blamed PM Manmohan Singh and Montek Singh Ahluwalia for this. A BJP spokesperson said, “The economy is in doldrums and inflation is increasing day by day. Aam Aadmi doesn’t have the money to pay for challans or bribe traffic police anymore, so they have started following traffic rules. PM must resign taking moral responsibility for this incident.”
On the other hand, head of newly formed “yet to be named party”, Mr. Arvind Kejriwal has assured that he will protest against this arrest on the Parliament Street. He has asked people to stop paying any traffic fines till transport minister C.P. Joshi submits his resignation.
Faking News is trying to ascertain if the detained man is the same guy who had switched off his mobile phone during a movie screening in a West Delhi multiplex.

Re: The streets are filled with idiots

We in our country don't like it the rule book (even if its mandatory, an if its optional its equivalent to non existing) way. Its not just about riding/driving but in every aspects of life. (even <not> walking on foot paths)
Our egos are as big as cubic capacities of our engines.

For me those 4 wheelers/2 wheelers drivers are no less than super heros who follow simple traffic rules and respect fellow commuters.
as simple as not jumping the red-lights (I dint give emphasis on converse, : to stop at red, just to put weights correctly)

What if at late night or very early morning its a green light and you are crossing it, and suddenly some one from the right/left side jumps red light (thinking nobody else will be there at that time and doesn't even bother to get slowed ) bangs into you?

but one can only check ones own conduct and if you take initiative people (at least few) will follow you, For example when leading the pack of traffic if I stop my humble bike before zebra crossing on redlight I usually find every one else doing same(majority of times).
converse: you make your way between narrow gaps in traffic and every one else follow you.

Once I saw a guy on stunner with helmet hooked on his elbow, I just pointed it to him in friendly way "bahiya ab helmet phen bhi to lo" , lucky for me the guy didnt get offend, he smiled back and put it on its correct place(head).

The majority on road is of daily commuters, so its always us vs us on roads,
                    1) I saw one office goer in car cornering (with his overtaking maneuvers) another commuter on bike to the edge of the road (which is usually filled with dry mud and broken tarmac particles perfect for skidding) resulting in the biker getting injured, (the way he was crying really frightened me) and that happened at early morning with way less traffic.

                    2) Its a norm for bikers(normally small 100ccs) to zip past their way in traffic, good but I don't like it when they almost over take me from left with their handles under my bikes handles or RVM .

                    3) Ok you have a torque monster (my bros riding mighty dukes), I love it to see a small orange dot grow bigger on my RVMs and zip past me in an open highway, but not when its crowded.

                    4) The Royal infielders (without generalization, like them only when they are stationary), sorry to say nothing so royal about them (NOM), seems like most cannot see anything beyond their metal bars and hear anything apart from its exhaust note.
they are worst in traffics, It has happened so many times that REs has hit (or just managed to) my bikes rear, and the face of the riders shows like nothing happened they didnt even feel it, macho yhe ....

                    5) If its a diesel the driver himself will be on turbo (not his/her car)

                    6) Guys on Ninjas and CBRs without helmet look ugly. I even saw a guy on his brand new ninja with his RVMs folded inwards and helmet hooked to elbow, (don't know why elbows are more important than heads, are their minds there )

                    7) If one ever travel in Gurgaon during 9-9:30 in morning, its a nightmare specially the MARUTI-SUZKI guys/girls they ride/drive like maniacs for their lives(later some one told they have attendance system and may get fined for delay .. dont know how much true it is .. but just heard). How I know they are maruti persons... damn all of them are in uniform, youngsters with may be their first jobs.

                    8) Finally I saw gender equality on roads, girls can rip their scooties and cars as much as guys can, and perform those breath taking maneuvers.
                    ]
A few times even I lost my temper (mortals trait/Dark side), and zipped past my way out of mad traffic like a maniac, ripping my bike, raced stupidly with others when they tried to throttle their way around me . I am ashamed for those few but weak moments, but I have learned (still learning) to hold my nerves and keep calm.

But there were moments when it was required for surviving in the tarmac jungle, else who knows I would not have been here to post this.

Agree 100%... Causing inconvenience to others is out of the question. But there are umpteen situations where following something becomes un-doable (illegal roadhumps, Illegally parked cars/trucks, busses stopped in the middle of the road, etc)...

True. But nobody would listen if you hit someone on the fast lane/mid lane/slow lane due to THEIR jaywalking on the road, right? But I agree there have been some real shitty scary moments for me too.

I change lanes to avoid hitting them itself, thats what you've got to do when someone springs out of the median bush or a dog suddenly dashes across the road when you cannot stop... you change lanes... not think about the rulebook. If I can stop, then sure as hell I would.

Not always, but most of the times I try to.

That's my case too... being educated people we ought to at least give it an honest and informed chance... My point exactly... In India... its relative... its not always, but most times we try to.

On a straight highway, most of the time. Give the trucker 2 mins. Don't honk. Flash your lights. They give way. But yes, its a different game altogether in ghats where buses don't give you way. That's the real test of patience and one does happen to break a few rules there.

... exactly... even on our first G2G Bangalore ride, we did overtake trucks on the fast lane from the left without the said "Give the trucker 2 mins. Don't honk. Flash your lights"... you and I among others did it too... so I would find myself a little too opportunistic and eager to preach if I judged someone off with a banner to 'follow traffic rules 100%'... All I can afford to say is... 'try harder to your true best mate, don't dare inconvenience others' - our traffic sense and road etiquette needs to evolve into something more efficient than western ways of traffic, mainly because the population and diversity of vehicles is much more here.

Driving school cars lol, I have overtaken them on my bicycle many times
I was coming from my daily ride and saw a guy on a P200NS trying to pop wheelies on the national highway and failing miserably without any safety gear, to compensate for his fails he executed a stoppie on the highway. I took notice of the number plate and went on minding my own damn business. I almost forgot about the incident and was on Facebook in the evening, suddenly saw a guy who looked just like the guy I saw trying to be the next Jorian Ponomareff earlier. looked at his other photos and confirmed the number on the license plate.

Apparently the guy is on xBhp and knows about safe riding procedure. If you are reading this, I'm the guy who rides a bicycle all the time with a freewheel wrench hidden under the seat. So never ever brake that hard all of a sudden to perform a stoppie without looking back to make sure if somebody is behind.
                              I am back!

Driving with high beam should be made a finable offence I feel . But as if it's ever going to affect these dumbos. Pedestrians here are a real bunch of retards thinking they're taking a stroll in a park or something.
Had an accident 2 months back when a drunk guy came running across the highway and i banged into him. Had no injuries due to the gear but the aftermath was pretty bad. This guy had a whole bunch of thugs with him. They pulled me off the road before helping the guy so that I don't run off.The whole intention of this group then was bashing me up and teaching me a nice lesson. Somehow I managed to plead them to let me go. The worst part was there were two hawaldars around and even they didn't help me. They just turned away blindly. All throughout this whole scene was going on this drunk chap just lay there on the freaking highway, that too on the right most lane. I urged those guys to help him first then sort out things with me. I still freak out just thinking of those 10 - 15 people surrounding me and hurling abuses while threatening to tear me apart .
So overall I feel that riding around in our country is pretty damn tough with a lot of small small things to take care of it order to reach our destination safely. If however something goes wrong then impulsive decisions should be avoided and in case of things turning violent words must be chosen very carefully.
                                What do you guys think?
