    Default The Music Thread

I searched the UT section but did not see one dedicated to the music that members listen to. Hence this start. Mods, if there exists one already, please merge the two. Thanks.

Motorcycling and Music are intertwined at primal levels. Our steeds make their own music when their electromechanical components come together to stage a full-fledged orchestra. We have percussion (the thump of the pistons), strings (the harmonics of the whole structure in full, separate frequencies in individual parts)and wind (the tyre roar, the slipstream). And the ensemble is completed by the conductor, waving (twisting) his baton (throttle) across an esoteric range of symphonies. The audience is the alter ego of the conductor and this particular one has the best seat in the house.

So, what music do I listen to? I listen to any music that appeals to me and brings a smile to my face, which can lift me to heights of ecstasy and plunge me into the depths of pathos, which can situate me instantly on a highway, on a mountain peak, swimming with whales, sharing a laugh, wiping a tear, living this short life to the fullest.

My choice spans from Indian classical at one end of the spectrum to Western classical at the end and gospel, Indie soundtrack, rock, jazz, pop, punk, reggae, grunge etc thrown in between. From Bhimsen Joshi to Vivaldi and Talat Mehmood, Chitra/Jagjit Singh, Bon Jovi, Dave Brubeck, Eagles, 2Pac, Green Day, Limp Bizkit et al.

What do the rest of us listen to.... Do write in.

At first, tons of applause to the thread starter person for taking this one vital initiative. Other than the Jokes, it is the music which soothes every brain.

further more, I think a title like "What have you been listening to recently ?" will make the thread more discussion oriented to mutually update each other with something really special, which just released or some may have missed (I mean oldies-goldies)

Among many that I listen to, I am a Linkin Park fan by soul ............. it was the entry-band for me into the English songs and I still admire their art of putting together the music in each of the songs.

Though after my college life, I am no more up-to-date with the latest releases (other than those of LP), so I hope some hymning bees here may help me jazz back .

    Warm Regards,
    Pranav

I am an avid lover of melodies. While I like to listen to music when I drive my car, on my bike it has been difficult especially with helmet. I wonder how few manage to listen music while on a 2-wheeler.

Getting angry at somebody is the same as getting angry with a bike that just won't go. You should stop and start thinking.

it's illegal (and well as unsafe, due tot he loss of situational awareness) to ride with earphones/earbuds in both ears.

Playing music while driving? Now, face it(The Pioneer,May 3,2010)

Get ready for stiff penalties for talking on your mobile phone or listening to music on I-pod or even using handsfree and Bluetooth devices while driving. For the first time in India, mobile phones, hi-tech gadgets, Bluetooth devices, walkman, handsfree, I-pods and similar electronic gizmos would be defined under law and banned from use while driving.

An expert committee, appointed last year by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to examine amendments in Motor Vehicles Act 1988, has finalised its report and proposed landmark changes. According to sources, an advance report would be submitted to Minister Kamal Nath on May 10, paving the way for legislation
    amendments after eight years.
According to highly-placed sources, the key recommendations are stiffer penalties for talking over a mobile phone while driving. At present, the fine extends to a maximum of Rs 1,000. However, the committee has proposed a stiffer penalty of Rs 2,000 on the first offence, Rs 5,000 for second and Rs 6,000 for third offence, followed by a suspension of driving licence. The gray area in the law on handsfree and other devices will be removed as all electronic gizmos would be defined under law.
A source said, We have specifically defined all gadgets, including I-pods and handsfree, so that a policeman is not misled by people claiming that they were listening to music on their cellphones when they were actually talking on the phone. The Act would now have proper definitions and clearly spell out that even listening to music on an I-pod while driving would be banned under law.
Another landmark amendment would be graded punishment for drunken driving. The fine would depend on the amount of alcohol in drivers blood. Sources said there was a proposal to recommend a death sentence for causing death while driving under the influence. However, the Ministrys consultative committee rejected this proposal. According to sources, MPs including Naveen Jindal and TR Baalu protested against such a stringent rule arguing that even a social drinker could be unfortunate enough to commit such a mistake.A source said,There was much protest... even the MHA has advised us against it.
The committee has now decided to impose stiff penalties extending up to Rs 5,000 and suspension of the driving license from six to nine months for driving under the influence of alcohol. There is a provision for on-the-spot suspension of license if found drunk behind the wheel.
All compensations would be linked to the price index and would be hiked annually.A formula will be proposed in the Act for annual revision.
For the first time in India, a hit-and-run accident will be defined under law that would enable the victims to get an immediate compensation of up to Rs 1 lakh. A solatium fund will be created to award compensation to victims of hit-and-run accidents. The final compensation package would be calculated on the basis of a number of factors -- like the age of the victim, how grievously the victim has been hurt and if there has been any permanent disability. A victim could get up to Rs 12-lakh compensation.
The Ministry had first introduced Motor Vehicles Act amendment in May 2007.However, the amendment Bill was referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture. After a year, the committee gave its recommendations in 2008. The Ministry finally prepared the amendment Bill after vetting by the Law and Home Ministries in 2009. However, the Minister refused to sign it, saying the exercise must be repeated. Nath constituted a new committee to look into it all over again. The Ministry now plans to send the Bill for consideration and passing in Parliament in the Winter Session.

SO as we are thinking about riding gear for afety same importance should be given for not listening to music while driving or riding
