Icon4 An unorthodox method to increase power of fz

    hi,
Many times i would start thinking of ways to increase the power of my bike. If i or anyone for that matter takes up this topic with friends different ideas would pour in ranging from k&n filters, boosters etc..

Then i came up with a plan which was a cross between k&n and no filters. the theory behind it was that more air means more power.

I decided to try a simple and cheap trick. i removed my air filter cover (circled in the pic) while retaining the filter box and sheet filter (stock).

This cover holds the filter in place and so removing it meant i had to clamp the filter in place which i did by using four metal pieces two inches long screwed tight on the corners. But this means a lot of dust and dirt gets collected which otherwise would have been reduced thanks to the cover.

The result was mixed. these are the results i found over two months of experimenting...
    Advantages
    1. Increase in top speed. My bike which maxed at 117 gave me consistent top speeds of 121.
    2. Increase on the throaty noise. Many asked me if i changed the filter or fixed k&n which i happily denied. The distinct k&n sound comes when people get misguided and use a conical air filter instead of the stock filter provided by k&n.

    Disadvantages
    1. The filter collected loads of dust. cleaning is very difficult and needs to be replaced sooner but then the yamaha air filter comes cheap at 250rs while a k&n conical filter costs 3k and the stock around 6k.
    2. Scowls from neighbors every time i start my bike.
    3. Rain can spoil the filter as there is nothing stopping it from entering directly which otherwise would have been stopped by the cover to an extent.

this was my experience. take it with a pinch of salt. I am no mechanic

    Unorthodox thread approved!

Let me clarify one thing, the improvement you saw in top end was merely because of more air flowing through and it effectively leaned out your Air Fuel Ratio. Doing so continually would screw the engine. There is no increase in power as such.
Also, along with more air, you run the risk of dust particles entering the engine and complicating matters further. There is no replacement for displacement (in terms of reliability) and there are no short cuts for hot rodding (read low cost setups or Indian jugaad setups w.r.t reliability).

Why put the engine in way of damage for a mere increase of 4km/h in top speed ? Normally the road conditions don't provide us with the opportunity to max out our engines. So for a few seconds of fun, i don't think its worth to damage the engine.

Our Mod has given a good reply which should be taken very seriously.

thanks guys...i know your misgivings. i was just experimenting and found different results.. i kept a second layer of filtration (vest) to filter further dust. i have since reverted back to the original arrangement. More tweaking is required.
What i found out through this was that i got better pickup and speed when i needed though reduction in mileage.
But when i was driving in normal speed and throttling, the mileage was as usual.

once i was done with experimenting i cleaned the carburetor and changed the air filter. Now its back to normal .
