Default Help with Activa's air filter.

i had been to ma friends garage to get ma bike tuned..
during that time his father asked why is the metal cone used in the air filter if the foam is more than enough to clean the air which is sucked in for combustion.
    many gave answers like
    1) for the foam to sit firmly,
    2) for extra purification of air,
    3) dust particles not to enter into the carb...
but all he told was it is wrong

but he did give a clue was , he put some cotton waste soaked with petrol into the metal cone and lit it. Now i am sure that more of u will be thinking that from all sides of the metal cone fire comes out..
if you people thought so then you are wrong. all that came out was smoke..
    Y is that..??
Can any one explain this clearly to me.

Dude it need some space to suck the air through the foam.if there was no space between the foam,it will be difficult for the air flow,it would need more pressure to suck air.

    ANSWER: It's a flame arrestor.

Thats what i think it is from your description, and more importantly from the clue. I have not seen an Activa's filter.

A flame arrester works by making a flame go through holes too narrow for it to continue. In my Pulsar its made of wire mesh. It is found between the carby and the filter. I think is to stop a fire from the carby, possibly from backfiring, or any other causes.

try takin out the foam of this kinda air filter and then put some cotton waste in it.. Then light it.. u will oly find smoke coming out.. I yet understand how this wud happen..
backfiring is not possible inside the carb cus the port or the inlet valve will not allow that to happen. .
Take an example of the outlet of a gas stove the holes of it are also the same way. why does flame come out of it and not from the air filter..???

    Please help

That is what a flame arrestor is supposed to do. Look in your manual and you'll find your miracle part labelled "flame arrestor"

backfiring is not possible inside the carb cus the port or the inlet valve will not allow that to happen. .
Combustion inside the inlet manifold IS BACKFIRE.
    Wikipedia:

"...backfire is an explosion produced by a running internal combustion engine that occurs in the intake or exhaust system rather than inside the combustion chamber."

"...an explosion in the inlet manifold, carburetor/throttle body, or air cleaner of an internal combustion engine can occur when the intake valves are not shut prior to fuel combustion."

Take an example of the outlet of a gas stove the holes of it are also the same way. why does flame come out of it and not from the air filter..???
You get a flame in a stove because the origin of the flame is outside the hole. In the stove the outlet is also a flame arrestor but in the reverse sense. The flame cannot progress into the burner.

    I hope you understand better.
