Best way to check for overheating is by measuring the temperature. You can also feel it on your legs. Burnt smell also points to the same. Also thinner engine oils will mean more valve clatter than usual.

Carrying on with the discussion on HOT Engines. With the summers coming to their peak, what are the best unorthodox ways to keep engine temperatures in check?

^^The same metallic sound that the engine makes when the tappets are loose.

And one more thing, the spark plugs will be whiter and have a glazed look.

Yup, the clatter would be more like as if something is loose inside. However, the most prominent would be oil burning smell and in some cases one would also notice lack of power. The engine would feel reluctant to pull.

Spit on your engine'e head when it is hot. If the spit vaporizes instantly, the engine is over the safe operating temperature or in other words overheating. Otherwise, you're good to go. If this is a little too nasty for you, try a couple of water droplets on your engine head, when hot.

    Bingo !
Makes perfect sense and is an extremely easy method to verify overheating.

    Other methods being:
    - Watch out for an odour indicating burnt rubber/oil.
    - Keep track of the engine oil level. Low oil levels are the prime cause of an engine seizure resulting from subsequent overheating.
    - Sluggish throttle response and unexplained loss of power after a sustained period of triple-digit speeds. This would indicate an imminent seizure unless one stops the bike and allows it to cool down.

    Cheers !

now thats a real cheap way to check engine temperature...... btw where did u learnt that trick......or is it your own patented technology

nowadays even my engine is running hotter...dont know if it had something to do with my wiring and coils modification for HID or just weather.
