    Default Weak horn sound

    Hey guys, I own an apache rtr 160 4v and recently I'm facing a problem that is the horn sound is kind of weak in morning and after riding for a few kilometers the horn sounds fine. Is the issue of the horn or the battery? The bike has done 2500 kms

    Thumbs up Re: Weak horn sound

    Topic Approved.

    If your battery is the problem, then you should feel it in other matters too, not only horn. Like, try using the headlight for 5-10 minutes, while bike is off, via the pass switch.

    Try checking your relay. Try checking if its being supplied proper voltage, or try replacing it with another one from good company like Minda, etc. and then check performance.
    Best thing is to go to a good outside mechanic who has enough time and knowledge...

    Most probably, I feel the problem might be with relay. Battery most probably doesn't die at 2500 kms.

    Does the RTR come with dual horn? I assume, they dont have a relay system. As in ZMR. I am just assuming. If this is the case, adding a relay would help

    Dual horn is fine. Need to know if a relay is used. Usually, stock bikes dont come with relay. So the horn sounds funny most of the times. Connect a relay and you are good to go. Horn will sound better

    Get it checked from a bike electrician.

    Two things to also check: First make sure the horn has a good ground to the frame. Most horns ground through their body, so the best thing to do is just unbolt it, clean the contact surface on the back of the horn and the tab where it bolts to the frame. If you can find some, smear a little di-electric grease on both, so moisture can't get in. While you're at it, do the same to the wire and connector coming into the horn. If you're feeling adventurous, you can try to clean the horn button in the switch cluster on the handlebar too.

    Second, make sure the horn is clean. The coil inside may be dirty, and when cold it sticks a bit. Horns aren't generally disassemble-able, but you can at least try rinsing it out to make sure it isn't packed with dirt.

    If neither of those procedures works, then the next step would be (as already recommended) to rewire the horn using a relay.

    For any readers who don't understand what adding a relay involves, the process requires running a wire (usually heavier-gauge) from the battery to the horn, passing through a relay. Then, you connect the wire from the horn button to the actuation terminal of the relay, so when you push the horn button, the relay is energized, which causes the higher-amp connection to close and power the actual device (in this case, the horn). Using a relay circuit can help in any case where the circuit for a device in a vehicle (lamp, horn, fan etc) passes through a switch the operator has to use. Such circuits often use thinner wire to minimize bulk, at the expense of amperage. By re-wiring as described above, you can get more reliable power to the device while simultaneously reducing the strain on the switch (which helps reduce the chance of an electrical fire).

    From the sound of it, it seems to be an issue with either your battery or charging system.

    Here's a DIY guide I posted on another forum, hope it helps;

    I don't think you should be considering adding a relay unless you intend to upgrade to higher output horns.
    @The Mountain

    AFAIK for motorcycles the switch triggers negative lead(confirmed with a multi-meter on my P220), so I doubt grounding to be an issue.
