[Help]: Mumbai to Somnath Route?

Folks,

Am planning a 4 day trip from Mumb to Somnath temple, gujrat.. The road distance is approx 900km... so was wondering if instead of going via ahmedabad it will be more prudent to take a state road from vadodara towards bhavnagar??

if you guys could suggest on the road conditions or any other tips, it will be quite helpful.. also am hoping that there wont be much rains, recent non-reliable forecasts seem to indicate so....

also was thinking of taking a detour and stopping over at dandi or khambat / gulf of cambay... sounds fancy considering that few rivers end their course here.. anyone been here or if they can offer tips will be great...

Did a Diu/Gir trip last March and the roads were in Ok condition. Not potholed either but not as good as NH8 too. After bhavnagar the roads deteriorate rather badly though. Took us more than 2.5 hours just for a 60km stretch. The route we did was Vadodra-Bhavnagar-Mahuva-Nagasari-Una-Diu. I would suggest you take an alternate route if possible. And after nightfall this route is pretty horrid since there are no lights, the road is pretty much non-existent, no signs of civilisation, repair shops and vehicles. Heck no truckies either...

While returning we took the Junagad-bagasara-Amreli-bhavnagar
My suggestion would be taking the Bhavnagar-Junagad route mentioned above to avoid the pain we went through.
Rains shouldn't be a problem as most of India is under a dry spell like Gujarat.
