    Default Help for ATHUL

Guys ATHUL has asked for help in PM but i am posting here so that all can benefit here.

@ATHUL- Since i was busy it became a little late in responding to your query.

Since your bike has run for 12k i would request you to service your bike properly.
Some points to take care of:-
    1. Engine oil- Change engine oil to SHELL ADVANCE AX7 10W 40 and this is the best oil for your extreme. Do not use 20W 40 as it alone will decrease mileage by as much as 5 kpl.
    2. Air filter- check air filter and if not changed change now. If you have changed clean it by blowing air.
    3. Chain cleaning- Yes dirty chain will increase vibration and fuel consumption. See my DIY thread on chain cleaning.
    4. Carburettor- Before cleaning the carburettor buy a air-screw as if the o-ring is cut then you will be in grave trouble.
Open the carburettor choke and accelerator cable and take out the carburettor. Open the slide and keep it in clean place. Open the float chambers and jets. The slow jet is 42 in size and main jet is 128(yes bigger than karizma). Open the air screw completely and take out the screw, spring, washer and o-ring. Check the o-ring and if it is cut or damaged in shape replace with new air screw. Check the tip of the air screw and see if carbon is present on the tip. If present clean it.
O-ring damage and carbon on tip is main reason of air screw not working properly and low mileage. Most mechanics do not know of this.
Now clean the complete throttle body in petrol or carb cleaner and then petrol. Blow compressed air through jets and air screw hole.
Now fit the jets and float chamber and then the slide taking care to match the marking of diaphragm on the carburettor.
While fitting the air screw from the outer end the spring will be first, then the washer and then the o-ring or from the tip end the o-ring will be first, the washer next and then the spring. Tomorrow i will post a photo. While fitting hold the air screw such that the tip is facing up and insert the screw by holding the carburettor above the screw. If you insert by holding the screw tip down then the o-ring will fall in the screw hole and thus will get damaged by tightening the screw.
But if your carburettor is not giving problem then do not open it.
Now open the air screw by two turns and leave it.

    5. Tappet adjustment- Use a feeler gauge to adjust tappet. Inlet is 0.08 mm and exhaust is 0.12 mm. Even if there is no tappet sound check it as after running some kilometers the valve seat and valve edge wear out slightly, so the tappet gets tightened slightly which is not noticeable but decreases compression and thus mileage.
    6. Check the spark plug and change it.
    7. Check both the brakes and if they are binding the wheels then post and i will help you. Tomorrow i will post both air screw photos and video of how much the front wheel must be free. If both your wheel are not free i will post how to do it.
    8. Carburettor tuning- After warming up the engine tune the carburettor according to my signature. Then decrease the idle rpm by turning the idle screw to 1400 rpm and decrease the idling by leaning the mixture using air screw such that idle drops by 100 rpm. Now set the idling by air screw to 1100 rpm.
WHY LEANING THE MIXTURE BY 100 RPM?
I know most of you will ask this question so i tell you why:-
    1. this is the factory method of tuning
    2. Some bikes bogs down on sudden acceleration at the optimum mixture and do not feel smooth and if you will think that by richening the mixture the problem will solve then instead it will create more problem. Leaning the mixture by 100 rpm at idle solves the problem.
    3. Some complain of not reaching top speed, then try this tuning and report.
    4. Decreases carbon deposit in head and valves.

    9. Open the spark plug and with a torch peep through the hole and see how much carbon deposit is on head. If piston is not on top then shift to second gear and rotate rear wheel and make piston top. If piston is having heavy carbon build-up then your mileage will decrease.
    10. And lastly use IFTEX SYSTEM 2-3, i am using in all my bikes and it has helped me a lot.
    Some advantages are-
    1. Smooth idling and no unwanted noise from engine
    2. Less vibration- This i didn't feel in my joy as my joy is smooth but in my extreme i can feel it.
    3. Quick start- No need of using choke and starts in half self
    4. No fear of carburettor block as it contains detergents.
    5. Same detergents keep the intake and combustion chamber clean. Also it cleans the spark plug.
    6. Lessens the effect of bad fuel.

I have been personally using it for 4 years or more and it benefits a lot. Instead of adding 2 ml as directed i add 1 ml.

If all this doesn't increase mileage to 50+ in city condition consider opening head and de- carbonizing and polishing the valves. Some models of extreme suffer from valve leakage problem and thus low mileage.
But first tune the carburettor properly and add additive and ride for 2-300 km and see the difference.
Some bikes do not show improvement by this but after head cleaning and valve polishing changes dramatically.Ask sarbonoxely about valve leakage as i have given a complete description to him and he will tell about it as he had followed my direction.

I have not completed yet. There are many other check points as it is 12k service and also the SVC have also screwed a lot. If you are not thorough in working on your own then find a good independent mechanic and tell him what to do. If possible take a print-out of my post.
Wait today i will complete as i am currently busy. Check in the evening.
Company claimed is 65 kpl and i regularly get 50-55 kpl in city and 64 kpl on highway cruising between 70-80 kph.

Tell me why you are not satisfied and i will give the solution. Simply stating that i am not satisfied is not the solution. Tell me the problem and i will give you the solution.

    @sibun da,

My Hunk's tacho is varying very slightly ever since I gave it for service. I checked the spark plug today and this is what I found. Could you tell me if it's ok?

from the angle of that pic i can see a bit of 'whiteishness' looks a bit lean, maybe a 1/4th~1/2turn out will richen the mixture a bit.
