I have completed 42.5K Kms with My Unicorn which will complete 5 years in next 3 months.

Recently had sounds from engine and replaced Rack-Ram Adjuster (sorry if I spell it wrong) along with timing-chain Adjuster.

Had been replacing a lot of parts for last 10000 kms (I feel like I am spending a lot on Maintenance. Even My family gave a green signal to get a new bike seeing me in my parking most of the weekends).

    Major changes:

At 31,000 had to change the timing change and timing-chain adjuster

    Entire Chain Sprocket set.

    Fork Cone set replacement

At 38,000 did a re-bore and changed Valves and valve guidance.

Also rusting has been a concern after 4 years. used a Matt Black Spray (Rs 150) to spray the bottom side of the Petrol tank and visible places on the Frame.

All my friends who own a Unicorn has the same issue (oil getting burned/Engine head issues) after the bike crossed 35000 kms.

Is it Normal in the Bike which you guys own ?

Mileage has been very good with consistent 55KMPL

I did a rebore at 48k km, replacing the entire clutch assembly, rocker arms, timing chain kit and spent about 10k only in parts. Even after all this my bike has become rough after 2k km and have hard gear shifts *sigh*

Does it mean that, we should keep our bikes for just 40k kms and then sell it.

It looks like, whatever money you spend on it after that, just goes down the drain.

It makes sense to buy a new bike, which does not require any maintenance for at least two years apart from regular servicing. Also a maintenance of rupees 15-20k spent, every year on keeping a 40k kms spent bike doesnt make sense, which you can pay that amount as EMI for a new bike.

If anyone can contradict this theory, i would be happy to hear that

Did you guys do the valve clearance check regularly. That is where all the problems start. Tight valve clearance can damage the engine soon and service centers rarely do it

My mech set it without the gauge even after I told him to use it, he said he knows what he's doing. I think I'll try to have the SVC do it next time, but only while I'm there.

Feeler gauge is very important to set clearance. Tight valve clearances are dangerous & spoil the valves and the smooth ride you got once. You may visit the dream yuga thread for valve clearance procedure, it may slightly vary for unicorn.

    Hi,

I am facing a new problem with my unicorn since last week. I changed my engine oil to AX7 shell in a Shell petrol bunk. From that moment i got out of the petrol bunk, i noticed harshness in engine sound, and the ride is not smooth. Once i turned the accelerator even slightly, it started to give more noise. When i took it to the service centre, they said it is tappet noise and adjusted it, even after that, the same noise was coming. Having frustrated with it, i asked them to do a full service, again changing with Honda oil, this time, assuming the problem will get resolved. But even after i got it after service, the same problem is there. When i checked with the Honda service person, he said, the engine head should be opened, and checked and it would cost some 2k. I am not sure, what has to be done. Please help me with this. Before getting the engine oil filled in the petrol bunk, the bike was smooth and no engine noise was coming.

I am sorry to hear that but frankly SHELL AX7 is a good engine oil i filled up 1000 km back and in starting i could not feel difference but when i pushed acceleration after 5000 rpm engine was still feeling good which did not happen before while i used VEEDOL OIL if you want to verify just go through my previous posts you will know besides any oil can not harm engine so far i have read on XBHP
About your problem one can not understand your problem unless one sees your bike or hears the sound (try uploading small video to youtube)
    if possible avoid opening engine

Does your Unicorn manual recommend 20w40 or the newer thin 10w30 oil ? I heard old Unicorns prefer 20w40.
Also clean your oil strainer and centrifugal oil filter to see if that is the problem.
