    Yes Please, I've blown the engine of Fz16 2 times while riding in the hills.
    Please give details about the exact problem faced in the engine so that other members get educated about such incidents. So much price for an average engine.

    I have also seen FZ smoking and with a lot of tappet noise and was surprised. CBZ-X and Hunk are marginally better. It seems when Japs try to extract a little more power than usual, they are not better than Pulsar so far as realiability is concerned. Old CBZ and ZMA have very little such problems due to their low state of tune.

      ive rode through the hills a lot and i haven't faced any problems yet (touch wood).
      through the hills I usually maintain an RPM below 6k in the first 3 gears.
      would be great if you could mention what engine speed you maintained.

        6k is my average revs. In the 2nd nd 3rd gear I usually rev to redline. U see the R15 cornering pics, those are over 60kmph. My average speed in the tight twisty hills is around 60km. I do the same with R15 but cos of liquid cooling its holding firm. Now the same engine in the Fz16 would be a dream combo.

        I am not saying the Fz16 engine is bad. I am saying is as per my riding R15 engine would suit me better. If yamaha made it I won't mind paying 90k for it.

          @spinz - You have still not outlined the exact problem faced in the engine which would be required for education of the members. Blown my engine is just a generalized term. It would help all if you give specifics. Also, if you redline for short bursts for acceleration, which I am presuming you do in 2/3 gear, it should not pose any problem. But continuously doing so is not a wise thing to do so.

            FZ is isnt capable of redlining in the first 3 gears on hills man!as simple as that!you should have known your engine...even on normal roads i stay away from redlining in the first 3 gears coz the engie isnt comfortable with it.
            and its pretty pointless telling that FZ should have had R15's engine because you can afford it...YAMAHA dint obviously intend the bike for that market.


            anyway pls do describe your exact problem so that we can have a good understanding of it...

              It is similar to a rally bike getting the beating when rode at high rpm.s on the ghats . As it is prepared to do so with reworked fuel delivery, compression, timing and sprocketing, a stock bike on similar conditions will definitely fail due to over heating. It is obvious

                  The fz is producing its power & torque at relatively lower rpms. So it is a good hill climber & revving the engine to the redline is not at all necessary.

                  At that rpms any engine will blow up. Fz is not made for revving that hard.

                  I personally think that there should have been a naked version of the R15 (not replacing fz). It would have made a cheaper version of the R15 & moreover it would reduce the surface area to make bike more stable at highways during cross winds. The naked version would have been better for offroading which is hard in the R15 due to its lower ground clearance. The naked version would even have less weight & would increase its maneuvering & flickability.

                    If a Pulsar engine can take 300 continuous hours of redlining ( at Full throttle) A better built Japanese FZ can surely take even more abuse. I dont think the reason for engine blow-up was 'redlining in first 3 gears in the hills'. Do look at other possibilities. The above quote shows that there is nothing you can do within your capability to blow up a modern "Made In India" Motorcycle engine. I mean just imagine the tank size of a FZ and how many times you will just have to refuel (in effect stop and turn off engine) just to redline the engine for 300 hours. Doing that continuously is next to impossible if you are not doing it "Under Standard Test Conditions".

                    Moral of the story: Dont be afraid to redline your engine. If the engine blows up, the probable reason for blow-up is not that you revved it too hard.

                    Speeds done by my bike in each gear at rev limiter (10.5k)
                    1st gear : 47
                    2nd gear: 79
                    3rd gear: 108
                    4th gear: 138
                    5th gear: Not yet hit rev limiter. Top speed ever done 147

                    Last tested: yesterday till 3rd gear. 4th gear rev-limiter was hit on Mysore - Bangalore highway last month for the 1st time.

                    Lets see how many of you can post the above info. How many have the confidence to test it out?

                    P.S.: Please dont think that a Pulsar owner has no business in posting on a Yamaha thread. I just couldn't let such a discussion that "FZ is not meant to be revved hard" go on any longer. Hence my post.

                    Edit: @Spinz Considering the company specified top speed of 110, a FZ engine should blow up only AFTER you have ridden at that speed for 300+ hours, continuously. (Which equals 33k km AT TOP SPEED!) I doubt that any of your engines had even done a total mileage of 33k km (I dont know it as yet.. but I surely doubt it). Finally.. Redlining does not kill engines.. bad care does.

                      Have some free time, let us do some free interesting talking.

                      Today, the Pulsar engine goes 300 hours full throttle.
                      The interview is dated August 2007. The first Pulsar 180 was launched around 5 years before this date. We don't know the reliability achieved by Pulsar 180 back in 2002. Yet, the power delivery was really commendable considering it was a first attempt by the builder. Kudos to them. This is the only reason I place the first model Pulsar 180 in three legends so far of the modern Indian biking i.e., CBZ, Pulsar 180 and R-15 (and possibly the Mojo in future) and not Karizma. About Karizma, will talk sometime in future.

                      About FZ, it is clearly a mid range bike. It is not that it cann't redline for long, it is just that it is not comfortable at redline and when a machine is operated in a not so comfortable condition for long, the chances of its failures are high. Spinz has still not given details.

                      Double OT - All speculations threads are closed. What will happen to us? Last heard, New CBR 150i is 23 kgs. heavier than the old one, so it seems the performance would definitely get affected as compared to the old one. Also, the new chasis must be capable of nesting a bigger engine also.

                        The Midnight Special Edition is looking just FABULOUS. Neat yet Elegant. I only wish they had a bigger engine, I wouldn't have sold my FZ.
