Default Concept: Motorcycle engine that runs on compressed air!

Two Indians conceptually design motorcycle that runs on Compressed Air !

    June 24, 2010

By now, I am sure you may have heard about Air Car. We had covered Tata Motors backed air car couple of years back. People have been quite interested in this clean, green air car, but it has yet to see the light of the day. Now, I doubt whether it was for real or just a rumour !

Now, two Indian Engineers Bharat Raj Singh and Onkar Singh who are researchers at SMS institute of Technology, Lucknow have conceptually presented designed a new, cleaner motorcycle engine (or any other light vehicle engine) that uses compressed air to turn a small air turbine, generating enough power to run the vehicle for up to 40 minutes.

Here is an excerpt from white paper which has been published JRSE (Journal of renewable & sustainable energy) by these 2 Indian Engineers:

The use of compressed air for running prime mover such as air turbine offers a potential solution to these issues as it does not involve combustion in producing shaft work. The great advantages such as availability of air as fuel and the absence of emissions are also apparent from air motors.
Compressed air driven prime movers are also found to be cost effective compared to fossil fuel driven engines. Such prime movers have perennial compressed air requirement, which needs some source of energy for running the compressor.
The overall analysis shows that the compressed air system is quite attractive option for light vehicle applications.

    Compressed-air-motorcycle-design

Simply put, the paper puts forth a design that can be combined with a compressed air cylinder as a replacement for traditional internal combustion engines. In areas where motorcycles are a major source of public transportation, such a technology can drastically cut emissions if implemented appropriately.

To be honest with you, I am a bit skeptical of compressed air to be used in any kind of vehicle. I had read extensively about Air Car, infact, also had seen few videos of an Air car in action, but nothing really has transpired (There have been talks of even water car). As far as this goes, it is still at conceptual stage It will probably take years, if not decades to come in reality.

The main impediment off-course is, all of them are based on compressed air, and if you need to compress air, you will off-course need to have some source of energy to do it !

hmm nice experimenting there.....why not big companies like HMSI and Bajaj do help these students and gain the new technology ...it will be better for people as petrol prices may go up in few days

So the fact of the matter is, we need source of energy...........
    so guys save petrol....

good concept but i dont think it is practical due to its low power output.

    Lightbulb Air Powered Motorcycle!!!

Though it will take some time before this can be made available commercially, the day is not far when gasoline and other traditional fuels will be replaced by air.

The Recent issue of Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy said that compressed air cylinders can generate enough power to run a motorcycle for up to 40 minutes. It goes without saying that with modifications, the power of compressed air cylinders can be increased.

Developing countries like India depend heavily on bikes and other means of transportation that can be used in rural areas. Apart from being economical mode of transportation, an air compressed motorcycle would cause less emission. Though some technical modifications are required for this engine before it can be produced on mass scale, it will definitely be a more eco-frienly and economical mode of transportation.

How an Air Powered Motorcycle works

Compressed air is stored in air tanks which are connected to rotary air engines that can rotate the rear wheels. Any tank can be used but a carbon fiber tanks are usually considered best for this purpose. An advantage of using compressed air over batteries is that it can be recharged instantly. Though air is available in unlimited supply, compressor needs electricity which must be easily available for refilling. Air filling stations are required for this purpose which may charge a nominal amount for each refill.

Major challenges for air compressor based motorcycle

The size of the tank for compressed air is a major challenge because you cannot carry a huge amount of air all the time. In its present form you may need to stop every 25-30 to recharge your bike which is very inconvenient. Moreover the highest speed of this kind of motorcycle is not more than 30 kmph. In its present form it can be used for short commutes. However its utility would be enhanced if it came with a pedal power as an option.

Ever heard of Air Powered Motorcycle? ? It is a reality now

Default O2 Pursuit the bike that runs on compressed air

The excessive CO2 problem has seen sparked a wild fire in search for a solution amongst engineers and innovators alike, from the absolute bizarre to some genuinely interesting and possible ideas. The hybrid electric drive technology is currently leading in this field, but that does not mean that people still do not experiment for a more environment friendly option. Dean Benstead, a student of industrial design looked at compressed air and saw a solution and went on to prove it by creating a motorcycle that runs on compressed air.
This is certainly not the first attempt to create a two wheeler driven by compressed air, because we have seen at least three concept bikes that take advantage of compressed air, Green Speed Air and Saline Bird are some of the concepts that use compressed air.

This concept by Dean Bensteadu called the O2 Pursuit runs on a frame from the Yamaha WR250F. Instead of the conventional engine capacity of 250 cc, the O2 Pursuit gets a motor that is propelled by air. This engine concept limits maximum speed to 100 kmph, but it definitely can go much faster. Further proposed improvements on the concept include using lighter build materials and cheaper products without a compromise on quality.
