    Talking Two new Harleys for 2012

    Harley-Davidson will launch at least two new models this summer when it unveils its 2012 range

    LEAKED documents have revealed two new names in the list of 2012 bikes. First is the Night Rod Special Anniversary. As its name suggests, this is a celebration of the 10th anniversary of Harley's water-cooled V-Rod range. Although we've yet to see the bike, it's a fair bet that it will carry a special anniversary paint scheme along with a selection of bolt-on extras to differentiate it from the basic version.
    Less obvious is the new Switchback. The name doesn't give much away, but we know it's a 1688cc machine using the latest version of Harley's classic air-cooled motor and that it's related to the Wide Glide, using the Dyna chassis. The bike is believed to be a semi-touring version of the Wide Glide, with removable bags and a screen – the “Switchback” name referring to the fact it can be switched to a touring role and back again easily.
    Elsewhere in the 2012 Harley range, the old 1584cc engine is being virtually eliminated, replaced wholesale by the 1688cc version in most of the bikes that didn't receive the bigger motor last year. As usual there will be tweaking of colours and specs, plus some alterations in the range of high-spec, 1802cc-engined CVO bikes in 2012.

    Smile A Switchback in Harley Davidson's 2012 lineup: The Dyna.

    A Switchback in Harley Davidson's 2012 lineup: The Dyna.

    Harley-Davidson has just released details of its 2012 model range, which includes the new Ł13,499 Dyna Switchback – a custom convertible with removable hard panniers and screen.

    The idea is to provide two bikes from one chassis – a tasteful cruiser when naked and a competent ‘bagger’ with the two colour-matched panniers and screen in place. Harley claims both touring components can be removed in seconds and without the need for tools.

    The Switchback is powered by the Twin Cam 103(1690cc) engine, previously used in the touring range and now replacing the Twin cam 96 (1584cc) lump of the Softail range, the exception being the Blackline model. The beauty of the bigger capacity 103 engine is it develops approximately 6% more torque for effortless (read smooth) drive and cruising.

    The Dyna Switchback is due in UK dealers mid-September, 2011.

    Other details for the new Switchback are:

    * ABS as standard
    * Revisions to the Dyna chassis of new 20mm front fork cartridges and tweaked steering geometry
    * Low-profile 130/70 x 18 front tyre for enhanced steering response
    * Tasteful 5-spoke wheels (18in front, 17in rear)
    * Full length footboards
    * Total pannier carrying weight of 13.62kg
    * 17.8 litre tank

    Guys, Switchback here means that it has detachable luggage bags and windscreen, essentially making it a 2 in 1 motorcycle, as removing the bags and screen will make it almost naked bike like.
    And believe me, owners will appreciate this as choice is mostly a good thing.
    Also, we are slowly reaching a point where ABS might become standard on almost all motorcycles, as it is also a requirement by EU, before 2017.
