Quite simple actually, both 200 and 390 Full faired KTMs will be modelled on the lines of the KTM Moto3 race bike, whereas the Pulsar will hit the CBR250R where it hurts the most by offering a more powerful touring companion at a similar price-tag. This is what I speculate.

This one I agree with you. Isn't the bit in bold exactly the raison d'tre of the Pulsar 200NS?

What they could try however is show their motorsport pedigree on this one too and model it like a SuperMoto with high GC and long travel suspension. That would make the KTM India lineup more complete with 2 Naked, 2 Full-faired and a SuperMoto offering without diluting their brand.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

A super moto from ktm even in sub 200 category will cost more and'll be needing more quality components than D200 so can't be a sub 1 L bike with minimal equipment.

a 180/190 duke; just cant digest. Even IF Pierer says so, R Bajaj won't be doing this

Yup, but the fact is, why would the faired Duke 200 sell more than CBR 250 with the same price tag(if they are targeting the masses). So a fully faired 180 is more practical price wise.

It wont dilute the brand any ways.A true enthusiast shouldnt care about such things, rather, the Japs should . A naked 180 would cost a little less than R15(hence might even cannibalize 200 NS sales).
If KTM wants to built a bike for masses, its welcome...

This is a nightmare. Bajaj-ification of KTM. Where else in the world do you see bikes differenciated by 10 and 20cc?

KTM's standard 125, 200, 375, 690, 990 sounds so much better to me. I fully understand that they are trying to go for the volumes but brand dilution is not the way to do it. Really disappointed. The right way to do it, IMO, would be to sell smaller capacity bikes under a new (non-pulsar) bajaj brand, while the KTM brand sticks to the familier international (equivalent) models.

I agree with Pierer, that India is actually a very price sensitive market. He seems to have learned a lot about India now.

A 180/190 Duke is a good idea if it can maintain solid performance. The acceptable compromises from 200 can be the Fi system (carb is good for tuners), USD Forks, tyres' size, etc. I do hope it doesn't compromise on the DOHC, 4 valves, frame, etc.
And I don't think a 180/190cc Duke will dilute the brand image of KTM, as it must still make above 20 bhp with a good weight figure. DNA should be the same.

And let me tell you guys that, although Mr. Pierer is pointing towards a lower cost product, we haven't yet seen or known its specs, so we can't say anything. What if it proves to be a low costing, but capable Off Roader in competition to Impulse? We're talking about KTM, remember? Or a capable Adventure/ tourer bike?

Conclusion is that we can't decide this early, if the product will expand or dilute the brand image, coz we haven't seen the bike.

And, think about it: A particular "106"cc bike making 7~8 bhp. THAT my friends, is definitely diluting... er... killing a "certain" Japanese brand and racing heritage. Getting my point?

180 or 190 is pointless. While the world lives with over-engineered 50cc, built-to-regulations 125cc and commuter 250cc bikes, India has always been about frugal 100cc bikes, then executive commuter 125cc bikes and 150cc bikes that assume roles from commuter to tourer to offroader to racer.

What would work for India would be using the Duke 125 block and developing a 150cc on similar lines making say 18 horses with 14 NM of torque and maybe launch it as an offroader. It can come with those expensive features that make real sense, like FI (would be very useful for those taking the bike on Leh trips). Such a bike wouldn't have any competition anway (save the commuter Impulse) so it can sit in the market without worrying about cannibalizing on other bikes from Bajaj/KTM.

In case everybody conveniently missed it(like I did), Stefan Pierer also said the following in this exact same interview.

The 125cc is a very specific displacement for the European market because that is more or less the moped class. You can ride it at the age of 16 and that’s a very European style. For India, I can expect 180cc, 190cc and not a 125cc. We expect additional displacements, the 390cc is coming which is a full faired version and the so called tour purpose version. By the end, we have a full model range where we can settle in all these and especially the Asian markets.

Well, I didn't miss it, But it seemed normal for me considering the fact that there have been talks that the P390 will be a Mighty Muscular Faired bike as well.
