    1186 units of the Triumph Tiger and Tiger XC have been recalled by Triumph America for incorrect certification label information.

    Amusingly, the motorcycles are being recalled even though there is no technical glitch in them, but only because a label with the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating was incorrect.

    The company said that the incorrect label might lead owners to overload the vehicle, resulting in handling issues and a crash!

    Triumph will contact owners and changing the labels free of charge.

    Is this overdoing the spoon feeding tendency in the west or just to ensure that no legal problems are faced by the company, if a motorcycle does crash?

    LOL, i highly doubt anyone who becomes aware of this would be bothered enough bring the vehicle in. They can just read up the updated info once they know that the info the label is wrong.

    Correct dissemination of mandatory information is NOT spoon-feeding. Because we in India pay casual disregard to enforcement of safety mandates does not mean that other nations are so irresponsible.

    Every vehicle, even in India, has a published GVW. The user manual mentions it. For commercial vehicles, it is compulsorily painted on the off-side (cleaner's side)of the cargo bay. The fully loaded weight of the vehicle can, under no circumstances whatsoever, exceed this limit else it is liable to criminal/civil penalties.

    The same obtains for aviation where weight is a critical parameter for flight safety. MTOW = Max Take Off Weight. I shall make the case simple, without additional factors like AMSL of the airport, pressure, temp etc for Max Permissible Take Off Weight . Suppose, for the ubiquitous Airbus 320 found in Indian skies, the MTOW is wrongly published as 80 metric tonnes instead of the correct 78 MT. Result? An additional 2000 kgs of weight will be loaded onto the aircraft rendering it COMPLETELY UNSAFE to undertake an operation. Implications? Lots of coffins and cremations, as the case may be.

    The legal problems will arise later when it is proved that the company knowingly ignored the needed amendment and allowed the user to operate the aircraft/bike in an unsafe manner. "Breach of faith", "corporate irresponsibility"," flagrant disregard for safety"," breaching of contractual obligations" would figure commonly in the later, multi-million class action dollar law suits.

    Forget about land-based bikes. You will be shocked at the lax safety standards in aviation in even uptil the late '80s. Google for "Gentleman's agreement in DC-10 controversy".

    BTW, Triumph has a history of taking such unilateral action for customer benefits. In the '90s, they used to routinely replace scratched body panels on Trophies while Suzuki used to send huge bills for broken Hayabusa frames (which themselves were due to poor design and shoddy manufacture)

    Appreciate Truimph's gesture of replacing the fairings in the 90's though why do they need to recall the bikes for a misprinted label? Couldn't they just post/mail the labels across to the owners?

    Yes, they could have done that, I suppose. Perhaps, they are not confident that owners would take the mailed labels seriously enough and so, recalled the bikes so that the ASC would educate the owners personally. Some legal angle has to be present, for sure, Product Liability clauses being what they are.
