Reasons are pretty simple, more so there's only one reason, No Fairing.

The Duke 200 has sold ONLY 11k units in all these 17 months. CBR250 crossed that mark much much earlier. R15v2.0 has been selling 2000 units every month since its launch. The Duke 200 is probably the most profitable practical investment one could have (and still) made but it just dint attract the aam janta, why? Cuz this is a fairing-frenzy country. And 390 will only get the worse part of 200's fate.

A fairing would have max costed 15k, increased the weight by 5kgs and decreased the mileage by 2kmpl. Now I know the price of the 390 because it shares so many parts with the 200 but trust me 15k is the max it all would have costed. And the faired 390 would be a phenomenal hit in India. Someone said its coming in 2014. Lets see.

I personally love the 390. Just wish it came with a larger tank for more comfortable touring. The windshield, top case, carrier plate, though all beautiful will be rudely expensive just like the 200's powerparts.
That is actually true. People here do prefer fully-faired bikes even if they are are slightly expensive.

If Yamaha comes out with a smooth, high-revving, 30bhp, beautiful R25 priced around the same as Duke 390, I am sure a lot of people will still go for Yamaha.

I hope what u r saying comes true, coz then my 390 will be a little more exclusive ,
ppl buy bikes for different reasons, and a fairing, is d last reason for me to buy a bike. Infact feel sorry for ppl who would buy a bike based solely on d fairing, or even worst, NOT buy a bike coz of lack of fairing.

Man this is super drool stuff we're talking about. What more one needs, ABS, 45 BHP, KTM Reliability. Just awestruck and sad that I can't buy. :banghead:

And kudos for Bajaj for making the crowd go wild and more excitement is yet to come in the form of the Pulsar 390. Phew!!

    Cheers!

There's a very simple reason for this - India is a very conservative market and KTM is totally a "new" player here. Everyone knows about Honda and Yamaha, no one knows about KTM. I'm not talking about us here on xbhp or enthusiasts and educated bikers who are in tiny tiny minority.

It takes at least 2-3 years for people to accept a brand and to be recognized as "OK". And it needs to release at least several different models as well (which KTM is doing) to show that it intends to stay here.

Apart from this reason, an aggressive styling and power delivery, together with much smaller number of showrooms and service centers, and relatively high price for an average person, also contributed to Duke 200 not selling as many bikes as other brands.

I'm pretty sure that even if 200NS and Duke 200 had same price that Bajaj would still sell many more Pulsars than Dukes. Just because everyone knows Pulsar and no one knows KTM...

Aggression+ short gearing makes it hell in outside city limits.
constant weening from the engine makes me irritating.

Do you think the 390 with comparatively taller gearing will make riding outside city limits pleasant? Asking this as i am use to riding a C5 and will be using the 390 as well for short trips. Am planning to book tomorrow, so the concern.

All the "minuses" you mentioned are pluses in my book. 200NS, for example, for me is just a little more powerful Unicorn and CBR250 is a great but boring cruiser (no offence to anyone!).
I love Duke 200 for its aggressive styling, short geared and aggressive ride, and that sound that goes crazy above 7k RPM... Pure bliss!
And btw, touring is great on Duke - effortless overtaking, totally stable at high speeds (unlike 200NS) and seating position is perfect, I can ride for hours and hours without back pain.
Duke 390 will be all that but just 2 times more! Including the sound!

Duke 390 has little taller gearing but much more power so no need to shift gears so much as D200. But its biggest asset for highway rides is VERY tall 6th gear, goes 100 kmh at 5k rpm. That's like a kitten purring...
Although, even on D200 in highway rides there's no need to shift gears much, or at all, because of plenty of torque in every gear, even 6th. That's why Duke is so popular with Enfield folks, so many have switched to Duke already...

Well ...this is the best news I heard in a long time...What makes me really happy is that as duke 390 is placed at 1.8L the 375 pulsar would be considerably cheaper !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kewl. And i guess 35nm of torque at 7k would also help. Anyhow even on the C5, in city traffic, very frequent shifting is unavoidable. And that gear box is unrefined, and shifting by itself is some task with false neutral between each gear. Hoping with the refinement the 390 brings in, even frequent shifting should not really be an issue.

Now where do i book? Indiranagar or BTM Layout?
