Default Honda Takes No.2 Spot in 2-Wheeler Business: xBhp News

ET Reports HMSI has overtaken Bajaj Auto in both domestic and overseas sales in July to claim the second position. HMSI had earlier overtaken Bajaj Auto in domestic sales.
It sure is no joke to be number 1, but HMSI seems to be on the way.

Honda motorcycle and scooter India private limited (HMSI), the only Honda in Indian 2 wheeler industry, has overtaken Bajaj Auto in both domestic and overseas sales in July to claim the second position.

HMSI had earlier overtaken Bajaj Auto in domestic sales. The monthly sales, declared on Thursday, put HMSI July numbers at 287, 177 units, its highest ever sales in its 13 years of Indian operations. Of these, 147,635 units were motorcycles and rest (139,542 units) scooters.

Company officials said the 35 per cent growth in motorcycle sales had powered it ahead of scooter sales for the first time. HMSI had started its business in India with a scooter portfolio to tap the market that had virtually no major players and entered the fiercely competitive motorcycle market later.

Scooter sales grew by 8 per cent. Sources said demand for the 'Dream series' motorcycles had led to the sales surge, enabling HMSI to overtake Bajaj Auto in domestic as well as international market. HMSI domestic market share is 24 per cent. Highlighting the company's performance in July 2013, YS Guleria, HMSI vice-president (sales and marketing), said, "Honda has created a new chapter in its Indian operations with three new records. In July 13, Honda have achieved highest ever sales, highest domestic market share of 24per cent and also became second largest player in domestic and export sales in two wheeler industry.

This is largely attributed to the overwhelming demand for Dream series and the increase in production with start of second production line at the third factory in Narsarpura, Karnataka."

Looking at the numbers, I can see that no scooters in the Bajaj lineup is the reason why Honda is second. Moreover, I hope Honda should not brush aside quality while aiming for quantity.

I am a Bajaj guy, having owned 3 bikes from their stable but I would like to add that I have immense respect for Honda and everytime I am surprised how they keep getting better with the quality of their products. There were some issues with the CBR quality at the beginning but Honda has ironed them out. The battle for 2nd would begin once Bajaj enters the scooter segment. I wish Honda all the best.

Honda were aided somewhat by the now 43 day long strike at Bajaj Auto's Chakan plant. But still, there has been commendable growth in the numbers of Honda. Kudos to them.

this news is also available earlier in sales thread, i guess.

honda's ambitious plans are no secret. and they are really putting in lot of efforts.

bajaj's real pain in ass is the absence of scooter portfolio, otherwise situation might be different.

also overseas sales should not be compared as honda is a global player since ages and bajaj is comparitively new and upcoming kind of. everybody in the world knows honda. so overseas sales is a different game altogether.

I guess Bajaj is certainly doing the best it can in innovating patented technologies rather than adopting or following overseas technology. First the DTSi and then the ExhausTEC and now the Triple spark. They could have more in store. I just wish Bajaj could hire hi-fi engineers from overseas companies and take a giant leap. Even if they move ahead and keep pace they will stand out.
