Icon1 Motorcycle Sales Report: July 2013: xBhp News

    Sales Report: July 2013.

The market emotion is again on the negative side, with few exceptions. The industry is slowly getting sicker as the year moves towards its end. We can blame it on the inflation, changes in taste, etc but the overall conclusion is a mixed bag. Let's check it out.

Gainers (+): Hero MotoCorp continues to prove itself the Hero of India, bringing in good sales despite the Honda breakup & the market trend, although the increase by itself was not even 1%. People either don't know or don't care about the Hero-Honda breakup.
Honda on the other hand, has overtaken Bajaj Auto once again, and registered a positive growth Year on Year (YOY) too. Their products under the "Dream" series have received good response from customers. Moreover, the increase in production with start of second production line at the third factory in Narsarpura, Karnataka was a factor too. Maybe they'll achieve market leadership by 2015-16 as they claimed? They're No. 2 now, by the way.
Being in the growth stage could mean big growth numbers. Yamaha proves this statement true with a 57% increase in sales YOY. This company is really aiming at rural penetration, but it really needs a better product range. Perhaps a new commuter might do the trick. With Hero, Bajaj, Honda, etc selling relatively newer & fuel efficient engines, Yamaha could do the same too, to remain competitive.

Losers (-): TVS somehow managed with a 4.7% drop compared to the same month last year. TVS hasn't had too many launches recently, but its basics are somewhat covered. The engines seem to be good, they have internet presence and the product line has its basics covered from 100cc to 180cc in motorcycles. Enthusiasts know TVS by its Apache RTR series. RTR series received a facelift last year, which gathered mixed response, but is now back to its original minimal-istic design.
Rather surprisingly, despite all the innovations, news and launches, Bajaj registered a sales drop of around 20%, definitely not a good sign for the (now) public company known for its R&D, innovation and designing capabilities. For June, this figure was 12% Y-O-Y. The recent strike didn't help much either. Many could be left wondering whether Bajaj is suffering from people's perceptions about its quality, which no advertisement or innovation can change effectively. We all know how India is: A bad past can ruin the future, whether its marriage or career.... or a company's reputation. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that Bajaj will continue on its path of innovation & quality improvement, as is clearly visible in its latest products.

    Bajaj Auto
Bajaj Auto reported a 20% decline in motorcycle sales at 2,46,828 units in July, 2013. The company had sold 3,08,858 units in the corresponding month last year, Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL) said in a statement. BAL said exports were down by 12% during the month at 1,10,023 units compared to 1,25,501 units in July, 2012.

In the commercial vehicles category, the company said its sales stood at 34,499 units as against 35,292 units in the same month last year, a decline of 2%. Total vehicle sales of the company last month stood at 2,81,327 units compared to 3,44,150 units in the same period a year ago, down 18%, the statement said.

    Hero MotoCorp
The country's largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp today reported marginal rise in total sales at 4,87,545 units for July this year. In the same month last year, it had sold 4,84,217 units, Hero MotoCorp said in a statement. Hero MotoCorp Senior Vice President (Marketing and Sales) Anil Dua said: "Our growth in July has come in the wake of good demand for our motorcycle brands such as Glamour and Ignitor and our scooter models Pleasure and Maestro.

"We are hopeful of sustaining this positive momentum in the coming months as we gear up for the festive season which would see a slew of launches from us." In terms of new international markets, Peru in Latin America is going to be the company's next port of call where the firm will commence its operation in August, Dua said.

Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India (HMSI)
Honda motorcycle and scooter India private limited (HMSI), the only Honda in Indian 2 wheeler industry, has overtaken Bajaj Auto in both domestic and overseas sales in July to claim the second position. HMSI had earlier overtaken Bajaj Auto in domestic sales. The monthly sales, declared on Thursday, put HMSI July numbers at 287, 177 units, its highest ever sales in its 13 years of Indian operations. Of these, 147,635 units were motorcycles and rest (139,542 units) scooters.

Company officials said the 35per cent growth in motorcycle sales had powered it ahead of scooter sales for the first time. HMSI had started its business in India with a scooter portfolio to tap the market that had virtually no major players and entered the fiercely competitive motorcycle market later.

Scooter sales grew by 8per cent. Sources said demand for the 'Dream series' motorcycles had led to the sales surge, enabling HMSI to overtake Bajaj Auto in domestic as well as international market. HMSI domestic market share is 24per cent. Highlighting the company's performance in July 2013, YS Guleria, HMSI vice-president (sales and marketing), said, "Honda has created a new chapter in its Indian operations with three new records. In July 13, Honda have achieved highest ever sales, highest domestic market share of 24per cent and also became second largest player in domestic and export sales in two wheeler industry. This is largely attributed to the overwhelming demand for Dream series and

    TVS Motors
TVS Motor Company has posted a decrease of 4.7% in total sales for the month of July, 2013, with 1,53,676 units as against 1,61,255 units registered during July, last year. The sales of two wheeler came down 7.14%, to 1,46,671 units during July, this year, as compared to 1,57,954 units during the same month of 2012.

Domestic sales stood at 1,26,531 units in the month of July 2013 against 1,40,862 units in July 2012, a decrease of 10.17%. Motorcycles sales grew by eight% increasing from 53,355 units in July 2012 to 57,886 units in July 2013. However, sales Scooters dropped 9.7% at 36,900 units in July 2013 against 40,895 units in the same month of the previous year.

The company's total exports grew 36.6% with sales of 26,145 units in July 2013, from 19,142 units in the month of July 2012. Two wheeler exports registered a growth of 17.8%, with sales at 20,140 units in July 2013, from 17,092 units in the corresponding month of last year. Three wheeler sales increased 112.2% to 7,005 units during the month, as against 3,301 units in July 2012.

    Yamaha Motor India
Two-wheeler maker Yamaha Motor India Sales (YMIS) today reported 57% increase in total sales at 58,151 units for July, 2013. The company had sold a total of 36,993 units in the corresponding month last year, YMIS said in a statement.
In the domestic market, the company registered a rise of 35% in its sales at 37,494 units compared to 27,858 units in the year-ago period, it added. In the export markets, YMIS sold 20,657 units in July, 2013 as against to 9,135 units in the same month last year, achieving a growth of 126%.

    For TVS

Domestic sales stood at 1,26,531 units in the month of July 2013 against 1,40,862 units in July 2012, a decrease of 10.17%. Motorcycles sales grew by eight% increasing from 53,355 units in July 2012 to 57,886 units in July 2013. Motorcycles and scooters account for only around 95K vehicles. What are the balance 31K vehicles? Do they still sell so many mopeds?
