Default Japan's Terra Motors unveils Rs 18 lakh electric superbike..

New Delhi: Japanese electric two wheeler maker Terra
Motors Corporation unveiled an electric superbike,
Kiwami, in India priced at Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom
    Delhi).
The company, which plans to start selling the bike in
next couple of months, also plans to bring in a premium
electric scooter, a range of affordable electric bikes and
electric three wheelers into the Indian market.
"Besides, Kiwami, we plan to bring in a premium electric
scooter and a electric three wheeler this year. We will
also consider launching affordable range electric bikes in
the future," Terra Motors Chief Executive Officer Toru
    Tokushige told reporters here.
The Tokyo-headquartered firm, which will be importing
the superbike initially into the country, is looking to
garner 25 per cent market share in the Indian electric
    bike segment.
"We are targeting 25 per cent market share this year in
the electric bike segment. We also plan to invest Rs 30
crore during the year," Tokushige said.
The Indian electric bike market is estimated to be
    around 60,000 units per annum.
The 1000cc Kiwami can cover a distance of 200 km with
a single charge and achieve a top speed of 140 km/hr.
Terra Motors, which sold 20,000 electric vehicles in
Japan last year, is also in the process of finalising
    dealer partners in India.
"With immense knowledge of electric vehicles, we will
associate ourselves with the dealers who are well
experienced in service quality," Tokushige said.
Terming India as an important market, Tokushige said
the company wants to be a front runner in the electric
    two-wheeler segment in the country.
"India is the second largest producer of two-wheelers in
the world. Hence it is an important market in our
    strategic growth plan," Tokushige said.

Hmm..... Who is going to buy this any way!!!. It will pass off as just another news... Bad selection of day for the comp to launch such a premium product. When you are targeting Indian costumer base, You should avoid clashing it with India Giants- Hero/Bajaj.....
But seriously, 18 lakhs??? why not get a R1/HD?? People here couldnt even accept an electric Reva, how will they accept a bike, that expensive? 60,000/annum? Dreaming.....

Japan's Terra Motors unveils Rs 18 lakh electric superbike | Deccan Chronicle

First of all, I think Deccan Chronicle reporter is either drunk or complete idiot!

How come this electric bike have a 1000cc motor???? I first thought it may be a very advanced hybrid!

Then I have seen following sentence on Autocar's report:

The company claims the bike's performance is on par with that of a 1000cc sportsbike.
    you can read it here

And the manufacturer claims that this bike matches the performance of a 1000cc bike!!! with a 140 kmph top speed! But what is not clear is a 1L bike from which year they talking about, may be from 1950s or before, hey may be they are discussing range here!

So I think Deccan Chronicle have to hire somebody who got brains!.

Second thing I am wondering about is:

Do we have a segment for electric bikes? I don't think they are talking about 800w hub motor based anemic scooters here, especially when they talk about matching 1000cc!

and if its a new segment, why not 100% market share? Brammo and Zero are not competing here, if that was the case we could have expected a 1% market share for this Japanese bike.

Oh I dont think even that 25% expected market share will include even half the number bike sold(12 bikes?).

    Edit:

This big bike show must be just for the announcement of brand arrival, before they start selling mass market, low power scooters and mopeds.

Given 18 lacs, I'd split the amount - 13 lacs for a Hayabusa and 5 lacs for the Mahindra E2O (Reva v2). There is a reason why electric vehicles, and specifically, electric SBKs like Brammo and Zero haven't taken off well. Nobody digs electric superbikes. For that amount of cash, one can get a serious hypersport like the ZX14R. And if I had as much cash to afford a ZX14, I'd really care a $#!7 for fuel costs.

In my opinion, team Tork have been doing an excellent job with their FZ16 electric retrofit. Give us something like the Tork - reasonably specced, usable, affordable (ok, Tork is still expensive, but at 3.8 Lacs, still way better than the 18 lacs quoted here.)

To all those who are saying that this is waste, no one will buy, its a futile effort, should search why Volkswagen made bugatti veyron, why tata made a gold+precious stoned nano, etc etc. Its called brand marketing.
