Steelbird Helmets are already a big hit for its innovative designs, curves, and sturdiness. This time Steelbird added new brand line in his Portfolio by launching “ARES” for Professional Riders first Helmet with NASA technology. “ARES” a revolutionary new high-end helmet series especially for Professional Riders with Unique features.

Rajeev Kapur, Managing Director, Steelbird Helmets -

“The product has been named after the Greek God of war.” ARES signifies Steelbird’s crusade for riders’ safety and protection and also promises to take the street biking experience to a new level of safety, substance as well as style,”.
ARES boasts of high-end material and technologies, including those used by NASA ‘Special Fabric’ for Astronauts. The Outlast technology, originally developed for NASA, utilizes phase change materials (PCM) that absorb, store and release heat for optimal thermal comfort. Outlast technology is comparable to ice in a drink; as it changes from solid to liquid, it absorbs heat and cools the drink, keeping that drink at the desired temperature for longer.

The series designed in Italy by highly trained Professional, produced using innovative technologies and high-tech machines, very high impact strength shell, high density of EPS to absorb the impact, imported, unbreakable visors in different colors, unique visor locking system to ensure safety in case of accident and single push user friendly button to open the helmet; will be well accepted in the market.

The helmet is designed in such a manner that it gives a look of Uni-Sex product. The Visor Mechanism is designed in such a manner that while opening & closing of the visor the screws will never open and no metal part is provided in the visor mechanism so it will never gets rusted and will have a long life and single push user friendly button to open the helmet.

Shailendra Jain, Head- Sales & Marketing, Steelbird Helmets -

“ARES” comes in a wide range of sporting and adventurous design, including the unique antique designer helmets in ‘Vintage Range’, like leather and denim stitched helmets inspired by the ancient Romans.

Priced Range between Rs 2,999-3,999 the helmet has been available with different models STROKE, SKULL, DENIM, DEVIL and so on.

The first one looks good. The demin one looks very different & strange, but let me think for some days, before roaming around wearing that.

At the end of the line, I and many other bikers just need ultimate crash protection, weather protection and wind noise comfort (in this order too, probably).
I remember getting a MTV Steelbird branded helmet for around Rs. 2200, a modular one and its bad on the wind noise levels. So much that I could hardly bear it after a long journey. Again, my imported brand new helmet, the KYT RC Seven isn't too good at Wind noise anyways.

Let's hope this NASA cloth actually is not a gimmick. But even if it is not, I wonder what huge difference can it make anyways?

But of course, in a market where we have everything from unbranded to Fastrack helmets, this won't feel out of place (talking about the first helmet, not the Demin one).

People are selling helmets as lifestyle accessories now. Wonder how that will click with the customers.
But helmets are essential safety tools. Style comes second, but still let's hope this makes indians wear helmets now.

I did some googling and found this, a page related to "NASA's phase change materials (PCM)" which is also called as Outlast Technology.
    Phase change materials (PCM)
Outlast® technology, originally developed for NASA, utilizes phase change materials (PCM) that absorb, store and release heat for optimal thermal comfort. Outlast® technology is comparable to ice in a drink; as it changes from solid to liquid, it absorbs heat and cools the drink, keeping that drink at the desired temperature for longer. Outlast® phase change materials work in the same way, but are microencapsulated to be permanently enclosed and protected in a polymer shell. We call microencapsulated phase change materials Thermocules™.
This encapsulation process makes the Thermocules™ exceptionally durable for many applications. These Thermocules™ can be incorporated into fabrics and fibers and have the capacity to absorb, store and release excess heat. This gives any product containing Outlast® technology the ability to continually regulate skin’s microclimate. As the skin gets hot, the heat is absorbed, and as it cools, that heat is released.

Outlast® technology is not wicking technology, which manages moisture by reacting to your sweat and pulling it away from the skin. Outlast® technology will proactively manage heat while controlling the production of moisture before it begins. That's the Outlast®difference

    Source : Technology

How is Outlast® technology different from other heat and moisture management technologies?Outlast® technology is proactive rather than reactive. Many products claim to regulate temperature, but they actually manage moisture created by the skin. And by the time they start working, you’ve already experienced discomfort from overheating and perspiring. Outlast® phase change materials proactively absorb and store heat to manage heat thus managing moisture and reducing it.

I don't think this technology as described above can be useful in helmets. When the head gets hot or whatever that means the material in helmet will absorb the heat and when it cools it will release the heat but our rider heads will cool only when we stop riding which is also when we remove the helmets. So going by this argument it can only keep absorbing heat but it cannot do so when it becomes more heated than the head because that will cause reverse emission to our heads!

Reverse emission wont happen. At worse the helmet will stop absorbing heat and transfer atmospheric heat like any normal helmet.

How useful it is depends on how well the fabric absorbs heat. And for how long. 15 mins might not help but 4 hours will be quite a boon even on day long rides as the shell can lose heat during breaks and start work again.

If the fabric absorbs lot of heat then day to day traffic will become little more manageable.

If a this is not entirely marketing gimmick we might have a decent product on our hands. I quite liked the first helmet in the pic.
