Benelli had stopped selling bikes in India in May 2018 after parting ways with its former partner DSK Motowheels which ran into financial trouble. However, Benelli has roped in a new partner—Mahavir Group for restarting business in India. Initially Benelli is looking to focus on the 300-600cc motorcycles through the 12 models that they plan to launch by the end of 2019.
Mahavir Group is setting up an assembly unit in Hyederabad to serve the demand for Benelli motorcycles in India through a licensing agreement. The two partners have also agreed to form a joint venture to set up a manufacturing plant in Telangana.
Dante Bustos, Chief Marketing Officer, Benelli said, “We took a fast decision of not to be out of the market for a long time after the problem came up. The first thing to do was revise from among all the relationships we had built. Our focus in India in the next two years will be in the 300-600 cc segment. We will launch 12 models by the end of 2019. Also now we are working on single cylinder strategy, for motorcycles with displacements of 135-200 cc, which is also a new technology. We plan to come to India with these, we cannot exactly say when but it won't be before 2019.”
Benelli plans to launch three 300cc motorcycles by October this year. These motorcycles will be assembled at the Hyederabad facility. The immediate focus of Benelli will be get the business back on track by ensuring the availability of spare parts. This also includes addressing the concerns of the customers in a timely manner.

According to Benelli, the potential in India is enormous as it is the biggest two-wheeler market in the world. Their aim is to produce cost-effective premium motorcycles that are manufactured in India itself. Traditionally, they produce 80% of the components in-house, but this time the company is looking to tap local parts suppliers and integrate them in their supply chain.
Benelli have set a target of selling around 3000 units a year and eventually have a market share of around 25-30% in the 300-500cc segment in about 3 years. Currently they have 18 dealerships but they plan to have around 55-60 touch-points across India in the next 2 years.
