How is this true heir to the R heritage with that basic frame?
The R15 and the R125 have proper perimeter beam frames. This is just like the CBr250R.

It's the air intake. The R6 has had that same hole for a while, and the R1 now has one as well, as have most of the Kawasaki bikes going back to the mid-2000s. Honda, Suzuki, and Ducati go with a pair of smaller inlets rather than one big one. GP bikes also have had just the single inlet for some time. The paired smaller inlets have mostly been required due to the limitations presented by the headlight assemblies. LED and projector lights have reduced headlight size and made it easier to put in a more direct inlet path.

many bikes do have an intake at that very similar position on the front..sometimes referred to as 'ram air intake', and some have pseudo 'intake' for aesthetic or maybe even aerodynamic reasons.
the current r3 iirc doesn't come with the intake at the front, and i am not sure if this 2019 model would feature the intake from the front.. maybe it is for aerodynamics/drawing in air and directing it downward to cool the engine (heat management). Let's wait and see.

I think it's a faux air intake. It's quite unaesthetic imo.

Shhh!! Dear sir don't give Yamaha any ideas! The price needs a cut more than a hike. Otherwise this beauty is dead on arrival, which will be a terrible shame .

Paying Kawasaki's infamous handling charge will seem like a bargain

BTW doesn't this handling charge thing come off as a #metoo moment for the bike market? I have heard so many companies accused of this and so many people just let them do it instead of protesting. Good on the people raising their voice!
