    Zero Motorcycles have finally come out with their much anticipated ‘electric streetfighter and it looks beautiful. Proportionate, muscular and equally powerful Zero SR/F offers no quarters to its competitors even the ones with ICEs (Internal Combustion Engine), except for the price maybe. This naked electric motorcycle is surely a step towards the future as it boasts of more power, short charging times, and arrives with a complete rider aid package.



    Coming to the powerhouse, the Zero SR/F is powered by a new air-cooled ZF75-10 electric motor that makes 110 Bhp of power. Nothing monumental here, right? Wrong. In addition to that ample power figure, it makes a staggering 190 Nm of torque! The top speed of the motorcycle is electronically limited to 200 km/h. And this powerful motor also promises a range of around 180 kms (mix of city and highway) which is quite good considering the power on tap. An optional power tank, will supposedly increase that number to over 300 kms. The best part though is the charging time. The 14.4 kWh Z-Force Li-ion battery pack now charges much quicker. The standard SR/F features a 3kW, which has dropped charge times to 100% from 9 hours to 4.5 hours when making use of 220v Level 2 charging stations. The SR/F Premium boasts a more substantial 6kW charger upgrade, which will complete a 0-100% charge in 2.5 hours at Level 2 stations.

    The innards of the motorcycle are suspended in a trellis frame which features a concentric swingarm which is being dubbed as ‘Power Pivot’ by Zero. It makes use of a concentric design, allowing the belt-drive’s tension to remain the same as the swingarm moves through the suspension stroke. The suspension duties are supposedly handled by a fully-adjustable 43mm Big Piston Separate Function fork, working in conjunction with a fully-adjustable Showa shock. Brakes are from J-Juan with dual 4-piston calipers, clamping on 320mm floating rotors, up front. In the rear, a single-piston caliper works in conjunction with a 240mm rotor. The rubber on the wheels, Pirelli Diablo Rosso II, which should provide enough grip to this streetfighter to handle some corners. Not being able to full overcome the inherent issue with an electric motorcycle but still making a definite stride forward, the weight of the motorcycle is around 220 Kg.

    Electronics are handled by the Bosch MSC which accommodates cornering ABS, traction control and drag torque control all of which are adjustable via the TFT dash. The Zero SR/F also features Cypher III operating system which has upped the ‘smart motorcycle’ game. The SR/F is the first “connected” motorcycle, allowing owners to track their bike’s location and receive updates in case someone tampers with it, share a plethora of riding data, display, and track battery management information, manage software updates and much, much more.

    The motorcycle seems like a mouth-watering prospect but the price, is eye-watering to say the least. $18,995 for the standard Zero SR/F and $20,995 for the fully loaded premium Zero SR/F… but the motorcycle looks really good doesn’t it?

    We're not looking at a bike which will set sales charts on fire. Less power, less involving ride (no gearbox), more weight, and pricier than a Superbike.
    But it surely slots itself in a comfortable space below the allout Lightning LS218, and most other e bikes.

    Even if I was in US with that sorta cash, would I? Especially against the Euro 3 models of CBR1000 and the likes? (US market)


    As expected the torque makes it a beast though. More torque than a Hayabusa, right from the low rpm's!

    I don't understand the concept of Electronically limited speed here. Why 200 kmph? To save on range? Safety reasons? Reliability?

    Valid points. And then there's this.

    About the speed limit, more than reliability, it might be safety and range.

    It would still take some time for people to move over ICEs. But products like this, the Lightning Strike and KYMCO SuperNex (it takes care of the engagement part with a gearbox and sound) are sure to help the process along. 2-Strokes to 4-Strokes maybe a vague comparison, but can be considered. With new technologies like Solid-State batteries and such, the prospect of electric vehicles is surely going to improve with lesser weight and lesser price too probably.

    So, let's see how it goes.

    Can I get detail specification for this bike? When it will be available in Indian showrooms and what is the estimated price??

    At the eye watering price of $20000 which in straight conversion is Rs 14,00,000 this is never coming to India I think. Especially when you add duties on top, who will buy this? The people who spend this kind of money are going for a huge prestige factor like with HDs, Indians( maybe even the Busa). This has none of that.

    No the reality my friend will be that the indian electric bike market will buzz to life with the likes of Hero. Make in India FTW!!
