Default Pikes Peak legend, Carlin Dunne, passes away after crash on Sunday

We woke up to devastating news this morning. Carlin Dunne, the legendary rider who had earned a name for himself in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb Races, has passed away. He was taking part in the 97th Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on Sunday when he crashed, less than a quarter of a mile away from the finish line.

Carlin Dunne, 36-years old, hailed from Santa Barbara, California. He had won the famed Pikes Peak Hill Climb race 4 times and was looking forward to taking his 5th title on Sunday. The race is a 20-km sprint to the summit of Pikes Peak. Last year as well, he won the race aboard a Ducati Multistrada which also spawned a Pikes Peak Edition of the motorcycle.

This year, Carlin Dunne was already one of the favourites to win the race. He was racing aboard the Ducati Streetfighter V4 Prototype. He qualified on pole and was well on his way to win the race and defend his title. More than that, he was also set to break the record for the best time in the category before the disaster struck.

The cause of his crash is still being investigated but according to a few sources, a lot of riders were struggling with a bump near the summit. It is being said that Carlin must have hit the bump at high speed which might be the cause of his crash.

Carlin Dunne is the 7th participant who has died taking part in this Hill Climb event. Our thoughts and prayers are with his near and dear ones.

"We mourn the tragic death of Carlin and he will remain in our hearts forever as part of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb family," said a news release from the Board of Directors of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. "Carlin will be remembered as a warm-hearted mentor with a competitive spirit."

May God bless his soul. Rest in Peace Carlin.

When I heard of their target aiming for a 5+ second improvement, I don't know, I didn't get a good feeling... I felt it was a bit ambitious.
I don't know if that was intuition or what.

But it's a terrible mishappening. God give strength to his team and family...

A very touching video published by Ducati, following around Carlin during his preparations leading to the race day and day before.

As of now, unofficially, few witnesses say that there was a bump towards the very last section of PP, which was troubling other racers too, and allegedly caused this crash by causing his "front wheel to spin out".
He was not even half a mile away from the finish when this happened.

Ducati have also given their statement regarding the unfortunate incident, and their tribute to Carlin.

Man, this is terrible. I remember reading about the v4 prototype and him racing it this year at Pikes Peak. Never imagined a tragic end like this. Prayers and condolences to his family and friends.

No motorcycles to compete in the Pikes Peak Hill climb in 2020 according to the organisers .Safety concerns specially after the Dunne crash possibly triggering the decision .
