Default The Ride of My Life : 5 Days MotoGraphing In Australia with xBhp and Flickr Rides!

Like every other teenager, I too wanted an engine between my two wheels that I already loved so much, and was fascinated with motorcycles. Problem was, no one in my family rode one. So on one fine day I got back home and was surprised to find a LML Freedom waiting for me. And I had to learn how to ride it, by myself. I had the internet. So I used Google. That is how I taught myself how to ride. And sometime later that year, I stumbled upon xBhp. I was already hanging around a few other forums on the web and knew how great these things are, and this one seemed to be the Mecca for Indian bikers. Further, this Great Indian Roadtrip thing was going on. So I got hooked in no time. Long story short. I was 16 then. I’m 24 now. And this forum has influenced me to be who I am today. Here’s how

I was into stunt riding, early in my riding days. Mattie Giffin and Chris Pfeiffer were my idols. But I soon came to the conclusion that I’d rather spend 12 hours on the saddle riding through great landscapes, than having one wheel up for 12 seconds. xBhp forums has had quite a few great motorcycle adventure tourers, I think this also had something to do with it. But our chief has been one constant source of inspiration for me, always. Be it motorcycles, photography or his outlook towards life, he is someone I’ve been following for ages now. So when I heard that one lucky rider would get to follow him around literally, that too in Australia, I had to enter the flickr rides contest. I’ve done my years of touring in groups and prefer riding solo nowadays, so getting to ride and shoot with The Motographer and learning from him seemed like a real dream come true for me. As a photographer, his work is unique. Because when you are traveling on a motorcycle, you see and experience things that you just can’t in any other way. The technical strength and aesthetic brilliance of his work with the camera had profound impact on how I wanted to express myself through visual arts, since the early days. I don’t think I would have entered flickr rides contest if a motorcycle or something that can be measured in monetary terms was up for grabs. This was the very first time I had entered into a competition associated with xBhp.

And then there were the fond memories of Great Australian Roadtrip (2007). I used to come back from school and read the fresh travelogues, posted from the road by Sunny and the guys. Most might think of Cricket teams and kangaroos immediately after hearing the word Australia. For me, it is the GAuR logs. No kidding. Also as a musician myself, the unique alternative and progressive styles of music coming out of Australia is something that I’ve been into. Karnivool, COG, Dead Letter Circus, sleepmakeswaves, Twelve Foot Ninja, Northlane, Parkway Drive, The Butterfly Effect, I can go on and on. I’m into fine art landscape photography, and most of my favourite seascape photographers are from Australia. Needless to say, Australia has been one of those places where I wanted to travel for a long time now.

Coming back to Flickr Rides, I had uploaded some of my shots to the flickr group and was delighted to be invited to the Bangalore Photo Ride. There, all the finalists were given a Sony Xperia L and were asked to make 10 photos on different themes within a day. You’d think riding 10 hours and shooting images should come easy to people like us, who love doing that for days. But to be honest, it was quite challenging for me. I’m used to riding the mountains and the highways, and shooting with DSLRs. Riding inside a city all day trying to shoot on given themes with a mobile phone was quite different. And frustrating, to some extent. Some of the images I made on that day, riding around Bangalore.

I was honoured to be adjudged the winner of the competition after a few days of the Bangalore Ride. And after the blurry last few days of preparation and running around to get the Visa and International Driving Permit, I’ve made my way to Delhi and about to catch my flight to Australia in the next 10 hours. I’m supposed to be riding a Ducati there. Yes, one of those fine high performance Italian motorcycles that posters are made of. And with Mr. Sundeep Gajjar. The Motographer.

Words fail me. I’m too excited and just trying to make sure that everything runs smoothly, and that I bring my A game to make the best out of this 4 day ride.

    Congratulations Anirban.

You are living the dream of not only the 2000+ photographers who participated in the contest, but also of thousands of other motorcyclists and photographers as Australia is one of the most beautiful countries to ride a motorcycle and to take pictures.

The Ducati Monster that you are going to ride will just be a cherry on the cake.

I am sure these few days are going to be one of the 'the most beautiful days' of your life. Do make the best of this opportunity. Take lots and lots of beautiful pictures and share them with us.

    Also ride safe.

Whats makes you sure that it is a Monster?

On a relevant note, Flickr Rides was an amazing first time concept to integrate what xBhp has always believed in - capturing and sharing motorcycle rides with photography. I am glad that xBhp has influenced so many people in such profound ways. I am waiting for Anirban here in Sydney as he right now flies across the Indian ocean. We will start posting updates from tomorrow!

Its going to be a "monster" - literally or otherwise! A capital 'M' doesn't make much of a difference!
