well i have been riding a honda dio and my CBZ before i tried a rented 06 CBR600RR in Thailand on my honeymoon and imagine that i had my wife pillion riding with me!!i did touch a speed of 174 kmph after which i had to brake haaaaard for a signal!! it made my guts come out of my mouth but i braked quite good! so if i can ride a CBR600 for 2 days in a foreign country with different traffic sense directly jumping from a CBZ then i guess i can ride the R1 too.!!

it seems all you guys are missing the point i am not discussing the power bands n riding ease between 600 and a 1000 so please it would be good if you guys could stick to the topic!!
ok there are a lot of guys on Xbhp with SBK's i suppose but how many of you has a fuly legal bike...now the R1 is the only legal SBK i can buy here in India right???what about the guys who have gixxers n ninjas and there are a lot of 600 cc's out there....are all those bikes legal???ok now all the talks about spending 12 lakhs+ and getting a legal SBK is just because i said i am going for an R1...what if i want a CBR 600???how to get a legal CBR???

ok pune, mumbai bangalore delhi are considered as SBK hubs where there are a lot of dealers and in a reply i read above it is said only few dealers are on the list!!why!???this is India buddy....corruption...the other dealers might have thrown some greens so they are spared!!! so what about owners of SBK's in small towns where the bike might be the only SBK in the place!!! in this country anthing is possible i can spend maybe another lakh to get papers for my R1 than spending 5 lakhs more!!yeah i agree with spares...but in my city even not even one R1 has been booked from the showroom!! and even though they told that they would sell it they dont have all the infrastructure to service it coz they havnt had a single booking since last 8 months of the showroom becoming 'yamaha superbike station' status!!!!

All the dealers that have been taken in are also giving out information about the bikes they have sold. You can go ahead and buy an illegal import since you are so confident about it. You won't be posting here to tell everyone that it was taken away from you, when it actually does happen. Besides, why ask everyone what you should do when you don't want to spend that extra money to buy official? The answer is simple. Buy illegal.

Here is the piece of news on today's online edition of 'The Times Of India'.

Actor's bike among 70 picked for ducking duty

MUMBAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has "detained'' about 70 superbikes from Mumbai and Pune, including the one being used by actor Ajay Devgan, for alleged duty evasion. Superbikes are not manufactured in India; these bikes were not imported in one piece, but as parts over several years, and then assembled.

While the newly imported bikes attract 60% duty, old bikes attract 100% duty. The parts, on the other hand, are brought in at 24% duty. Five swanky bikes, mainly of Honda make, are "detained'' the Marine Lines office of the DRI. One of them is a Suzuki Hayabusa. Some of these can attain a speed of 200 kmph. On Thursday, 22 premises, including some automobile
showrooms, were searched. Some bikes were picked up from the homes of owners, like that of Devgan. Film-maker Sanjay Gupta's bike is also under the scanner. He, however, denied that it had been "detained''.

The DRI worked backwards on the information that customs data in Mumbai did not show any imports of bikes, but they were being used all over, specially in suburbs like Bandra and Andheri and even in south Mumbai. The RTO registrations of these bikes led the DRI to the documents of sale and import, including the bills of entry, which turned out to be forged.

The parts were imported from Singapore. The DRI is still checking whether they were imported as misdeclared cargo. The superbikes are sold for anything between Rs 7 lakh and Rs 15 lakh. The number of bikes "detained'' will go up substantially, as the agency is still on the job. Sources said neither Devgan nor the other owners might have known about the way the bikes were imported.

all you guys seem to be talking well about 'legal' bikes which you can buy from a yamaha showroom! now this legal selling by a showroom started only a few months back if i am not wrong.....i guess kenda has an 07' R1 right??how did he get one when yamaha started selling R1 officially in 2008??is it a legally bought bike??it would have been from a dealer ofcourse! what about allll the guys out here who own other brands of 06,07 models???where did they come from???so if i am not wrong only a guy who owns an 08 or 09 R1 bought from a yamaha showroom has the right to talk about 'legal' SBK's!!! alll others who have older models of various brands are not even fit to post comments on 'legals'!!

He got it imported under his own name, personally! Lot of pain was incurred during this whole 'saga', trust me on this! And moreover, the total cost was more than what YAMAHA is selling it's official R1 for! But I believe it is the way to go, way better than getting a dealer involved. Please refrain from pointing any fingers towards any individual.

Anyways, I feel you are hell-bent on getting a gray market bike. If you want to, then no-one can really stop you in doing so, but in the future just keep an eye out for the DRI officials! You never know when it would be impounded.

This news is really an eye opener and boy am I glad that I picked mine up from the dealer paying what is due for it... no fun playing with the government no matter how inverted the import duty structure is! for my sake, I would not like them to tinker with it otherwise spares will become excessively expensive.

Earlier, I couldn't understand why these bikes bought privately were cheaper than the ones available with the official channel but now I do. However, what still beats me is why anyone in their right minds would still want those and suffer on maintenance, parts and service when it is officially available from the manufacturers directly right here?

Who is to blame for this, the one who deliberately decides to go with the cheaper imports or the grey market which offers the temptation of lower costs to the buyer?

On little more imagination, if I were the 'official' importer of Yamaha, Honda, Ducati...., I would not mind working backwards in the corruption chain and keep the DRI people 'happy', so that they run behind the illegally imported bikes/dealers, which will automatically force people to stop dealing with the gray market and come to me and buy it officially at the higher price.
