Default Thrilled, Terrified and still riding the Yamaha R6

Apparently numbers make it easier for people to grasp information. Let’s give that a try.

It’s been 5 months since I bought that wicked whip parked outside my apartment.
I have put about 3200 Miles on her since then.
I once hit 140 MPH on the freeway in a 65 MPH zone.
I have spent about 500$ installing exterior mods on her.
Oh…….and I also turned 25 in the process.

For those of you, who read my first thread…”Dream on no more”……. I can tell you this…that I still get dreams about not actually owning an R6. And then I wake up….see my helmet and go back to sleep with a smirk. I think, you can’t just train your mind into not dreaming those dreams it has been dreaming for god knows how many years. 5 months in contrast to all those years is infinitesimally small (derivatives and those stupid concepts). Out here, I am one of those “You ride a bike to work every day?...are you serious?” guys. I am the guy, who from waist up looks like an alien..thanks to all the gear. I am the insane guy who wears all that gear and sweats like a pig in this burning summer heat. All this hardly bothers me….. because all I need to do is swing a leg over her and I know why I do, what I do.

The miles I have put on her have been nothing but thrilling…and sometimes terrifying.
To be precise, once I crossed the 1000 mile break in period…it was terrifying. Because I got a chance to really open the throttle and take it beyond the magic region…BEYOND 9000 RPM. Believe me folks…..this bike is absolute madness after 9000rpm. All that you have heard and read about the insane top end on an R6 is true. The truth comes at you like a smack on the back. It just goes into overdrive when the revs are high. Seems to become smoother as the revs climb. And the soundtrack…….ohh my god…..i can just record it and listen to it all day. I remember the day I hit 140 mph on it. It was a Saturday…amazing weather in march. I was on the freeway with very lil traffic and most of all…the HOV (high occupancy vehicle…bikes and vehicles with more than 1 person are allowed to use that lane) lane was empty. The speed limit was 65 and I was doing about 70-75 keeping up with the other cars. I merged onto the HOV lane……scouted around for cops……dropped speed to about 20 mph…..and decided to go for it.
    Shifted into 3rd at 7’000 rpm….was doing 60mph
    Shifted into 4th at 12’000 rpm….was doing 120 mph
    Shifted into 5th at 14’000 rpm…was doing 140 mph

Guess what I did after that…..yup…I chickened out….things were going by me in a blur. I thought I was in a speed tunnel. For those of you who have played NFS underground…..you know how, when you hit nitro….you get the motion blur effect. DITTO. I was tucked behind the windscreen and it probably looked like I was kissing the tank. True moto-gp style. I could hear nothing but the famed wailing motor of the R6. Felt like I was isolated from the world…..and there was nothing but me and the bike morphed into one entity. I loved it…and then suddenly a part of me freaked at the thought of being pulled over by a cop. You can be charged with criminal speeding if you are caught doing 25 mph above the speed limit. Which basically means a suspended license and possibly some jail time? And not being a citizen, the consequences are worse. I was doing more than double the speed limit. Thankfully head ruled over heart and I slowed down….i talked to my bike all the way to the destination….yeah..i do that…LOL. I bragged about it to my friends……that did not go too well…… ;-)
I ended up promising to be careful and use my head more often.
City riding is a blast too. Although the R6 doesn’t pull as hard as the other Jap bikes at lower rpms….it hardly makes a difference at city speed limits. The most fun part is leaning the bike into turns and pulling of the F1 sling shot move on someone. I have come to learn, that if you believe you can make the turn and you lean the bike well enough while still twisting the throttle….you are gonna make the turn for sure. Even a slight bit of doubt can change the outcome. I don’t know how something in one’s mind can do the trick. It’s like the bike knows what you are thinking. It has happened to me several times, where while I am leaned into a turn, I suddenly feel doubtful about the entry speed….instantly the bike begins to go wide..and I let off the throttle to correct it. And you all know…..the right way to lean is with the throttle rolling. One of my favorite parts about riding the SIX is when you are on the throttle approaching a traffic signal and suddenly you see the light turn yellow……..you start engaging the brakes while you shift down…and at the same time you rev the engine slightly with the clutch pulled in…..tap vroom tap vroom tap vroom……..god it’s such a rush even to slow down on these bikes.
Oh btw…all the stories you heard about the heat from these bikes…..TRUE…when the traffic is moving slow…or rather hardly moving…..and with the summer heat….it can be very very very hot…..imagine travelling in a packed Indian local bus…..now take the top of the bus off…exposing yourself to the summer heat…and just to make it more fun….imagine the bus driver takes the engine cover off and the hot air is blowing at your thighs…..yep….that’s how it feels…with all the gear on in that heat. But hey…who cares….you are riding an SBK…..

Mods…..hmmm..the thing about mods is that once you start modding your bike, you can’t stop. It’s like, you start treating her like a person. You want her to look stunning…with the best accessories. Be it performance mods or exterior mods. I havent gotten onto the performance bandwagon yet, but I sure am full into the exterior mods. The following are the mods I currently have on the bike:

    • GYTR Frame Sliders
    • GYTR Double Bubble Tinted Windscreen
    • Graves Motorsports Fender Eliminator
    • Custom LED Integrated Turn and Brake Lights.

    *GYTR (Genuine Yamaha Technology Racing)

See “walk around & sound test” video for a closer look.

99% of the bikers get rid of the rear fender. It gives the bike a very clean look. The Custom LED lights are just so awesome. Bright as hell and some really cool features. See video. As far as performance mods go….I intend on getting a GYTR carbon fiber slip-on exhaust, BMC performance Air Filter and maybe a chain and sprocket kit. The GYTR slip-on sounds like a dream…not loud …but kinda throaty and it sure looks slick. Maybe later this year. For now I am waiting in on some xenon white bulbs to replace the stock head light bulbs.

Phew..that’s quite a long post. Anyway….I hope you guys enjoy the pictures and video. I have been thinking of doing this for a while…finally found the time. I will post up some more pictures of my buddies and me on our bikes later this week. We plan to have a photo session with a bad ass DSLR camera. So all you Gixxer, CBR and R6 fans out there…there’s more to come from me.

    Peace Out.
    Ride Safe.

    Nice post there~!
I am glad to see that there are more of the Alien types around

My daily ride to my office is almost as fun as yours.... except for the fact that back here we are still stuck in a sub 250CC class!
I ride a 150CC moped (gets ready to be stoned to death) called the Yamaha R15 (Yeah thats like 1/4 of the R6 and probably 1/15th of its performance)

Good to see the Sanity prevailing under that lid!

    Ride on!

R15 is the best in the business in this country.

Wonderful write-up @Carlitos, good pictures and an amazing bike. Yes, the scream of the '6 at 12k rpm brings on those goose-pimples big time. Keep giving us more...

Great Writeup Carlitos ... Wish I could own the R6 or the likes, here in India.

But so lots of issues like service, sales, spares, DRI,etc. Damn! Despite having the cash here, one can't own it "peacefully" ...

Anyways, keep riding safe ... & Keep Obeying Rules as always.

Small OT: I personally don't like R15 being called a Moped!? We all know what it did for us ... no need to repeat it.
You can surely Wait for the performance kits, they'll be here by July Starting...
