Bibhu - I guess it's going to be a beautiful journey than a story. Nevertheless, it's always good to read each's passionate moments written. Anyone having cash could get RD350, but knowing what about the bike, priceless. So bring it on!

RD, I am sure, is a bike that brings drool when someone mentions it for any 80's kid. I was contemplating on getting me one before i went for the KTM 390. There always is nostalgia associated with that bike. I rode it wayyy back in college and still gives me goosebumps thinking about it. I would love to read some ownership experience about this bike today. Subscribed.

My obsession with rd began when i was 16 yrs old. Honestly i had never seen the bike. Only heard about it from a friend. When i started buying auto magazines, looking at pics, I always saw articles about bsm rd350 chapters through out India. The obssesion grew and grew. But I was still a kid. So got attracted towards fancy four strokes. The one thing I still regret about those days is that I could have bought a brand new 5sp rx. Insted I bought a pulsar 180.

A few years passed, I was happy with my pulsar180, never gave a second thought to buying a 2t bike. Somehow, all 2t bikes I test rode back then seemed weak and unimpressive. Blame it on poor maintainance and bad tuning. Most of my friends had left town after their graduation, I was doing law so I was still in college. Sitting alone watching bigger 4t bikes emerge, with still unamusing character, it hit me, I needed to get an rd350. Initially it was only due to the fact that it was a powerful bike and could decimate all at that time. I could not ask at home for a bigger bike. So in my mind rd was the "cheap" alternative.

Finally, in 2005, I decided to get an rd anyhow. Finding an rd for cheap in those days was pretty easy. My mech told me that there is a very good rd for only 6,000 rs. I was overjoyed and paid him total amount including shipping in advance. The bike came in an auto and I was very disappointed to see the bike. It was not a bike, it was a heap of junk and cowdung. It seemed the owner had a very bad accident on the bike and had thrown the bike away in anger. The bike was standing in his cow shed, axle deep in mud and cowdung.

Seeing the condition I was very angry with my mech. However he kept insisting that he would make it like new. The bike was devoid of seat, meters, all lights were absent, paint was non existant, wheels were rusted to death, tyres were rotton, air box, chain, headlamp and tail lamp brackets were missing among other things. Thus my first stint with the rd began. I read upon the bike and how to restore it on the web. Rddreams caught my eye as it was an indian website. However, at that time I recieved no external aid/help of anykind. So I had to depend on local sources to gather parts and to fix the bike.

The said sources took undue advantage of my ignorance and robbed me blind. Thousands were spent on worthless desi parts and the biggest issue faced was the ignition. The points were damaged beyond repair. The bike became a testbed for insane and unfeasable ideas. Desi cdi, proton chambers, twin pulsar discs, karizma fairing, unicorn tank, "racing bike" rear cowl etc etc. In the end i had an abomination that could hardly be called an rd. It never ran how it was supposed to and I got fed up. I gave up on the bike. I felt like crying, because the moments when it did run properly gave me a glimpse of what 2strokes are capable of and why they are so addictive. So to have some satisfaction i bought an rx100. The bike was nearly left standing for 6 years.

About a year ago, I decided to take another crack at rebuilding the rd. Again the bike was opened to be fixed. However me and the mech had a fallout regarding the bike which forced me to take matters in my own hand.

Thus began my first home diy rebuild.

You are one braveheart, fallout between you and your mechanic was the best thing happened to you(i think) because that forced you to take the restoration by yourself and all of these 2st. demands bucket full of love from there owners,a mechanic can never feel the way a 2stroker lover or owner feels for his bike. Waiting for some snaps of your or i should everyones loving RD.

Since I had never worked on a full project alone I needed help. I was already gathering spares from dealers I found on classifieds and social media sites, but the quality of those spares was worse than junk. So I reached out to my old friend Shriram for some help. He did the biggest favor he could ever do for anyone by pointing me to Dr. Nitesh patidar(yamdoot). Initially the "doc" and me exchanged some messages . When doc had the confidence that I would be able to pull off the build, he started coaching me actively on the rd. What to expect from the build, how to fix things, how and what spares to choose etc..., it was the doc's confidence in me that gave me the courage to go forward with the build.

Its unfortunate that the "before restoration" pics were lost when I misplaced the pendrive they were contained in. But you can judge the condition of the bike from these pics fairly well. It was completely botched up.

Yes the condition of the bike is pathetic, but if you have good doctor by your side disease can be cured,so how did you procure spares because oem spares for these bikes are almost nonexistent today, and how much did you invested in bringing her back to good form.

never give up , doesnt matter which 2 stroke it is , have learnt a lot in all these years,

    1) The internet is the big help here, specially the members here & other sites too.
    2) never buy desi/locally made stuff online, they will always ship to you the surplus parts.
    3) for parts they are some alternatives ( here's one example below)
Rims ( RD came in 18 in wheels)
1st choice ( adeep rims which came on pulsar 150/180 )
    2nd choice ( unicorn rims)
    3rd choice ( H Honda CBZ )
you are not alone here , everyone does mistakes & we learn from them , feel free to ask here .

    ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

Also plz dont use that airfilter as its cap end it needs to be open on all side as RD has reed valves, I meant that filter shouldnt be used on reed valved bike.
