Default TVS Suzuki Max 100R - Good First Bike ?

Hello everyone, Bharath here.Hope y'all are doing fine. It's been quite a long time since I have visited xBhp... good to be back! I came here during my schooldays and now I'm in my 2nd year College and I'm kind of in need of a bike. I want to earn and buy a modern motorcycle but my father suggests that he can get me an old 2 Stroke/Beater Bike to be of temporary use to get around the city and let me have a little fun without breaking the Bank. In the meantime I can keep earning for a nice new motorcycle (Hopefully Tork launches thier goddamn T6X,It's more worse than Mojo's delay lol)

What we saw,was a bunch of hopeless ones,Old Victors,Pulsar 150s and stuff. Most of them ridden to the moon and back, with the head blown and oil leaking everywhere. Some of them didn't even have the proper papers. What we finally saw that was decent, is a Max 100R. Priced at about ₹7,000. It was in decent condition and quite a bit old now. Papers are all up to date and genuine. The Engine sounded OK for its age, nothing bad of any sort (At least for my newbie ears). Electricals were working fine. Usual things with an old daily-ridden 2 stroke - Faded paint, Rust in some places, Little Oil traces here and there.etc. I always loved 2 stroke for their simplicity and that wild exhaust notes at crazy high RPMs, I used to listen to the NRG500 and stuff. But as I grow older,I realize it's nearly 2019, petrol aint cheap and 2T Oil isn't all that easily available either. Being a young musician along with my college stuff - would owning an old decently maintained 2 stroke make sense? - That is the most important question. I have a few more questions.

    1) The Max 100R and AX100R - are they the same thing with different names ? Asking because finding the owner's manual for Max100R is near-impossible I think. But the one of AX100R is readily available! If they are not the same thing,What are the differences ?

    2) I believe a particular year model (2000,IIRC) of the Samurai came with the Fuel Gauge (Don't exactly remember when) - Is it possible to source that meter and is it possible to fix it on the Max 100R ? Because being a college student who earns a little and wants to take care of fuel (& maintenance) costs,That fuel Gauge would be godsent! Or is it possible to retrofit the Fuel Gauge from some other motorcycle ?

    3) I know absolutely ZERO about 2T Oil but I know it has to be mixed with petrol for 2 stroke engines. But I think that the Max 100R has a seperate Oil Pump ? What Oil should I use and should I premix or not premix oil with Petrol ?

Right now these are my queries and I will upload photos of the motorcycle when I get to see it again soon,so that you guys can get to understand the condition of it lookwise..

Thanks a lot guys! Have a great time!

    Hi TVSian,
    My 2 cents.
Its a very good and most underrated bike in its era. IMO it is equally good as an RX100(my peraonal view). If my memory serves right TVS suzuki was stopped around 1996 after that TVS and suzuki JV came to an end. And Suzuki started manufacturing as Suzuki MAX100 R till early 2000. We can find the headlamp shape change from box to round. Final batch was from TVS from around 2002 till the govt put to an end for legendary 2 strokes. And this little bee was replaced by Tvs Star.
My dad sold TVS suzuki max100r in 2003 and replaced with a new TVS max 100r. Latter has some weight reduction and still has the essence of max100's. I still ride a 2003 max R it can easily compete with todays 100 to 125cc 4 strokes. Never broke down once. Crossed 1.5L kms. Engine work done on around 1L kms. If u can live with FE of around 40 to 45 kms and if u love the scent of burnt 2T oil go and get ur ride. Hope this helps!!!

Thanks a lot man! Yeah,Made some ~7Bhp or something,Very much enough for city commutes.I rode one today,1995 Model I think,Not sure,It looked great from the outside but upon starting it,There was problems - The engine couldn't idle properly and was struggling to come along, but it didn't miss Beats and was able to rev up without any hickups so I guess the Carb is screwed but Spark Plug is alright.Electricals were surprisingly OK-ish for the most part,Only one indicator didn't work.I would love to make it full 12v DC though.I slotted into gear and the first thing I noticed is a clutch that's in need of retirement from a long time. The bike can move from standstill...but that's what it can do.Beyond a certain RPM,The engine screamed all over the place but the bike simply just doesn't move,on all 4 gears.Struggled to reach 50kmh/r on 4th gear.Brakes are uh.. Non-existent.Certainly not taken care all that well. The papers are alright so no problems there. So the things that need work were the Clutch,Electricals,Carb Re-Tune.My main worries is that the parts availability.

    Anyways,Thanks again!

@TVSian all oe parts are available for max 100 r that too very very cheap in comparision with rx 100, i own both and can swear for max 100 r for reliability and mileage too. A good tuned max 100 r can give you 60 mileage anyday on highway.

Hmm.Max 100R is a segment below the RX100.The RX100 is a Performance machine,Max 100R being the Entry Level commuter so we can expect running& maintainance cost to be lower on the Max 100R

I am not taking mine to the highway simply because that would be a little too dangerous for me.

This is a bike my father saw today evening. He says it's of much better condition than the battered one we rode yesterday, and the seller has put in ₹5Gs of work on the whole bike so that it will not have any major problems. It sound better,Electricals work,Brakes work (hahaha) and it seems that the bike doesn't slip or sputter and pulls nicely.I have to ride and see it.Negotiation is underway.

Basically I need to learn how this whole thing works and how it is different from current gen bikes.Mainly want to learn Carburettor Tuning

List of Future mods I have planned

    1) Conversion to Full 12v DC Electricals - I don't know what the benefits are,But I do not like how the brightness of the headlamp is connected with the engine RPM.Maybe this reduces strain ?

    2) Meter Console mod with low fuel indicator - Because I'm a student with not much of an earning for myself and I need to know when I'd need a refuel maybe even the entire Meter to Late-Samurai ones or Shogun one

    3) Shogun RVMs - Because they look much nicer and are more functional too.

    4) Gloss Black Engine and Crankcase Paint, with chrome nuts and white-highlighted 'SUZUKI' logo. Also Gloss black Rims and Hubs with Spokes and Drum Brake Lever on Chrome.

Just a question - I might be able to find that beautiful rare Supra rear cowl. Will that fit on the side rear of the Max 100R ?

Best of luck from my side, i never seen supra cowl in a flesh so no idea but in my wild guess chassis are the same so it may fit and you have to redone seat assembly too.

Finally,I have got the bike! It's a 2001 Max 100R.Paid about ₹7,500 for it and got it.It was owned by my dad's friend so he was a trusted source. The best part about this bike,is that the papers are alright - Original RC Book,Insurance and FC all done and valid.Got it home today early morning and rode about 10KM from my home to college. Here are some findings from what I saw and the things that I felt, from riding it

    First Impressions upon Seeing :

Needs a good Wash + Degrease.
Rust spots all over the bike (Tank,Swingarm,Front Forks,Suspension.etc)
Tank seems to have rusted under and have gotten some work done to it,No idea what's done and owner says that its nothing to worry about.
    Dead Speedo and Odometer.
(Owner says bike has done ~40K KMS,But no idea as Speedo stuck at 19,999KM).
    Missing Handle Top-Left Stem Nut.
Handlebar is from HeroHonda and is quite wierd,Want to switch back to Max100R/Samurai Handle.Does anyone know the cost ?
    Slightly bent RF Indicator.
HeadLamp also from HH and I'm yet to test it.
    Missing IND-SUZUKI Logo Speedo Front.
    Squeaky Choke + Bad Cable.
    Rusty Squeaky Switches.
Clutch Cable Play a bit too much.
    Bent Underengine Cowl.
Bent right Footpeg,Hitting leg while kicking.
Have to Remove Ugly Tank Cover.
    Loose Left Panel.
    Loose Squeaky Rear Footpegs.
    Loose Seat.
    Loose Rear Fender.
    Brake Light not working.
    Loose Squeaky Kicker.

    Upon riding :

Starting was a bit of a challenge because I didn't know I had to start it with Choke all the time,I just kept kicking and kicking with curiosity and joy, without knowing I had to turn the Fuel knob to Main and start with the choke. Then father came,Typical 'Lemme show you how it's done, noob' look - Switched on Petrol,Pulls the choke,2 slow kicks and one firm 'KICK' and she came to life!!! Experience from his old Samurai and RX I guess
The Bike's exhaust note didn't have the usual muted tone of a typical Max 100R but sounded more like an old Supra,A little loud,Nowhere near the Shogun though.Idled nicely and the gears slotted smooth,no harsh sounds there. The bike pulled well but upon accelerating or de-accelerating,I listen to a slight 'kat kat' sound from the rear wheel somewhere.Maybe its the sprockets saying goodbye ? I'm not sure,But I hope it isn't anything serious.Went to Reserve mid-way so I put in 200 bucks worth of fuel (₹82.65 as on 1st November 2018).The Petrol attendant asked me if I wanted Oil but I said no,as I remember my father telling never premix as the bike has a seperate Oil Tank and only to fill oil when the Oil Lamp glows in the Speedo console,So I need expert advice from you guys about Oil.Oh yeah,The lights work but the Meters are dead.I tried revving the bike higher and realised that there is a stronger pull at higher revs than on lower revs, really nice! Coming from an 8Bhp Scooter to this 7.5Bhp 2T motorcycle,I don't feel like a downgrade,as it has a peculiar 2 stroke pull to it! Beyond 50kmh/r I notice that the steering kind of moves around a little bit and obviously due to safety reasons I slowed down.Maybe something with the Wheel ? Fork ? Stem,I don't know.Electricals,Apart from the brake light, everything works. The Max 100R didn't come with a Battery IIRC,But the owner said he has added it.He has also done a roots horn to the bike that's ho(r)nestly...terrible.It's not a consistent horn and also the Indicators have a very cringeworthy chime to it.

Other than that,The bike is fantastic and I think it is a great first bike as a temporary use.I hope parts are not hard or not very expensive. Here you go with the pictures!

Thanks a lot,Please pour in your valuable suggestions and opinions!

    Update :

Rode the bike a bit more, with frequent stops here and there.I found that the bike struggles to start easily.I switch on the petrol first, use choke, after a firm few kicks, the engine comes to life and when you switch off the choke, even after some time,The engine dies, but repeat doing that and the engine settles to a nice burbling idle and does not die.So once it becomes warm, its fine but getting it become warm is really hard lol The right footpeg is bent and hits the leg when kicking,a little painful yeah :/So I guess the Carburettor needs a cleanup and retune along with a new Air Filter. Heavy rain splashed but the bike kept going without any problems once it was warm.I also noticed that the Brake lights actually work when the ignition switch position is in the 'Night mode' but it isnt working when apply either brakes. So maybe the problem with the connection somewhere.

A service manual for this bike would be extremely useful!
