Default Yamaha RXG: Get it ready for long rides

    Hi all,

I own a 1997 Yamaha RXG, which is in regular use and apart from that has done a few weekend trips of around 300 kms per day and performed really well.

But now, I am planning to do some long rides, like Gurudongmar Lake ride in October this year.

My bike doesn't have much modifications presently except the front disc which has been added very recently.

Requesting you to share your experience and knowledge on how to get the bike ready for long and arduous rides (such as the Gurudongmar Lake ride), be it modifications, upgrades, maintenance work, spares to carry, etc.

    Thanks in advance..

    Depends on How many kms.

I topup the 2t oil tank before the ride and also add 100ml of 2t oil in a full tank

Clean your air filter and carburettor And then tune the mixture screw on the carb after cleaning

Check the brakes(liner left) and tight Till specifications or with your own preference.

If travelling by night get a new headlight lens and reflector i.e. Hella one with a HS1 bulb it’s awesome

Check tyres- tyre wear and pressure.

Carry a toolkit to fix minor issues like fixing a broken chain, oil pump adjustment, spark plug removal and clutch cable changing

    Now come spares. Carry these:
    • 2 master chain links (in case of a broken chain)

    • 3-4 extra set of silencer muffler screw(the ones that hold muffler to silencer)

    •500ml 2t oil bottle

    •extra bulbs(headlight and taillight)

    • some petrol pipe

    • 1 new spark plug

    • Electrical tape

    • a small pack of Zipties!!

Also service the bike properly before the ride checking any unusual sounds and for something that needs replacement. Also change the gearbox oil if it is not changed for more than 5-6k kms.

Also warm-up the bike properly by letting it idle for 5 mins before setting off for the journey

Please don’t address me as sir I am just a 18 year old having a 2-stroke passion. That’s what I felt the need when I went for a long ride last year.

    Keeping smoking the roads✌️
