Default The South Indian road-trip '2010

Hi all… this is Rupesh and its my very 1st thread… and what an awesome way to start it…. 2 bikers - 7 days – all 4 states of South India - 2584 Kms. It all started on the New Year day, Yes it was on the 1st of Jan ‘2010 that I on Yamaha FZ & Suman on his Yamaha FZS started for the road-trip, touching all 4 states of south India… Unfortunately, I was working the 31 night unlike most of u all who were enjoying…. I had to take permission to leave from office @ 3:30 am and meet Suman @ 5 am as we had to reach b’lore by evening 5 PM as planned…
    BIKERS
    Rupesh Nair on Yamaha FZ
    Suman Kumar on Yamaha FZ-S
Rout : Distance as per our trip meter
    Day 1 : Hyd - B’lore ( 577.00 kms )
    Day 2 : B’lore – Ooty ( 342.30 Kms )
    Day 3 : Ooty – Munnar ( 252.60 Kms )
    Day 4 : Munnar – Ooty ( 283.80 Kms )
    Day 5: Ooty - Coorg ( 253.70 Kms )
    Day 6 : Coorg - B’lore ( 268.70 Kms )
    Day 7 : B’lore- Hyd ( 579.80 Kms )
Day 1 - We met @ Miyapur as planned and hit the Hyd - b’lore highway… I had plans of sleeping at some dabha on the way if sleepy, as I worked the whole night and thought it would be difficult to ride for 600 Kms. But that was not the case, we took our breaks every 75 or 100 kms and maintained a speed of about 80kmph to 90 kmph and reached b’lore @ 6.45… we clocked 577 kms… we both were very much excited abt the days to come when we would be riding thru the ghats of ooty and munnar… we planned to start from b’lore before the roads get crowded…
Day 2 : we started our day @ 6.45 am and started for Ooty… I was very much excited to reach the Bandhipur forest n see some wild elephants but all we ended up seeing were two elephants with Mahoutson them… we then headed towards the much awaited 36-hairpin bends…. It was an awesome experience riding on them but I really felt very much under powered… had to come to 1st – 2nd gear and the tacho was reading 7k on most of the curves, but thats coz I was pushing the bike to its limits… there we saw one Indica which had its clutch plates broken… we reached Ooty @ 4, took a room dumped the luggage and went to the Pykara lake.. the 23kms is a real heaven for any biker… the sweeping curves force u to throw ur bike around them all the way down… its these kind of roads that any biker would die to ride on… we spotted a Sambar deer on our way… Uh !! atlast something wild, not really wild though, to talk about…
Day 3 : As it was cold out here in Ooty we woke up late and by the time we started for Munnar it was 7:30 AM. We took the Kothagiri route and the ghats descended down to mettupalayam and it turned out to be just another awesome ride with sweeping curves and hairpin bends… we came across traffic as the Conoor road is currently blocked due to landslides…. There was too much of traffic on the way from Mettupalayam to pollachi… Once we crossed Udamalpet the roads opened up and invited us to another beautiful stretch of ghat roads with breath-taking tea gardens on both sides which force u to stop @ every corner for a quick click… We reached Munnar @ 6:30 and booked room, dumped luggage and went around roaming all over…. We were supposed to take a day off from riding tomorrow and start fresh on the 5th… but we decided not to waste time and start for Ooty tomorrow itself and visit Coorg as we would be having the xtra day…
Day 4 : I was damn sleepy… good that I had an Suman as my team member who made sure that we never started late on any day…. He woke me up, we packed our bags and started the days riding @ 7:30 am…. I can never out in words how amazing the tea estates were looking in the early morning fog… we could just see half of the hills above us as the other half was covered with fog… We ate boiled Quail eggs & fish fry in the forest and headed towards Coimbatore… We met Menas who came with me & Suresh to Leh… he asked us not to take the regular route to Mattupalayam and to go thru Annur to avoid the traffic… and we could reach much faster as we came across very little traffic… We reached Ooty @ 7:30
Day 5 : We started from ooty @ 8:30 as we had just 200 odd kms to ride and had the whole day to go…. We took the Ooty – Sultan batery road and even this turned our to be a bikers paradise… 60 odd kms of sweeping bends with good tarmac, will force u to push the bike to its limits… The roads till the Waynad wild life sanctuary was awesome… but do not take the road to Coorg thru Tholpetty… there is no road, all u will find is pot holes.. its horrible, so try to find a better road to coorg if anyone plans to go… We reached Coorg @ 6:00 Pm and I personally found coorg to be a pretty ordinary place, unlike Munnar & Ooty, may be its coz we xpected too much…
Day 6 : we started our trip from Coorg to B’lore @ 8:30 thru the beautiful coffee estates… but the bad roads plaed the spoil sport till mysore… and then it was the amazing Mysore - b’lore highway which took us all the way to B’lore by 4:00 PM…
Day 7 : Started the day @ 5:45 back to Hyderabad…. With all the unforgettable memoris of Munnar & Ooty… all the wide life sanctuaries and the ever-inviting ghat roads… we reached Hyderabad @ 5.50 Pm and bid farewel to each other and thanked for the awesome company and gutsy rinding for continious 7 days. It really been one of the best rides of my life, after the Leh trip.

I own a FZ-16, and frankly am a bit disappointed at how it fares in the highways (not the ghats, this bike rocks on mountain roads ) in the 80 - 100 mark. I want to do a similar long trip but I am not entirely sure about the touring capabilities of this street machine. And to be honest, this triplog just added to my confusion :P.

Any comments? How did it perform with all the baggage? Rider fatigue.. etc? Anything I should take into account when I go touring on the Yammie?
