Mumbai to Begaluru Route help!!

Hi everyone,

i intend to visit bengaluru soon in the next 3- 4 months (hopefully but most likely August '11) primarily for 2 reasons:

a) Get my bike JOELED!!!

b) Meet old school friends and have a blast there.

Hence, i am planning to go crazy and do a solo ride from Mumbai all the way to Bengaluru and enjoy somewhat 'small touring experience' others have logged in their account!!

Total distance to be covered approx: 1071+ kms

Judging by the fact that i would be probably hitting south during peak monsoon. Hence, need advise from you all in terms of the most suitable route, road conditions (as of now), on route pit stop hotels if any (i donot intend to do a 1000 km saddle sore attempt )

As of now, i have acquired protective riding gear (Riding jacket, bionic knee guards, courtesy, Mr. Bhavishya, Scoyco) for such a task, saddle bags for luggage and also now in the process of acquiring rain gear for the same. Will get foot pump and puncture repair kit soon for DIY puncture repair incase such thing does occur.

any advise from experience riders, or those who have already done this would be greatly appreciated.

I remember reading somewhere the in bengaluru, police interceptor vehicles are always on the lookout for bikers from outside and on the highways, once one enters the outskirts of bengaluru, the max speed for bikes is below 60 kmph?? any advice regarding how to tackle crooked cops would be a plus.

Are you sure to take that way? I'd prefer the simple NH4 instead. For the express way between Mumbai-Pune express highway, yes, you've to skip that part.

NH-4 is a breeze,roads within maharashtra aren't much in good shape,but once enter karnataka the roads are butter smooth,but i guess monsoon ride isnt advisable.couple of railway crossings after devengere can slow you down.The roads mainly pass through isolated areas,so make sure your bikes adequately tanked up,and yes keep a sharp eye on vehicles coming from wrong side.

Pune --> Solapur route will be a mess . The roads are not in a condition to drive now , in dry weather. I wonder how the condition would be in winter. The best way for bengaluru would be NH4 straight . As far as the interceptors are concerned they are mainly for speed , if you have proper papers no way they can fine you. 3 Major places in my knowledge. 1. As soon as you cross kittur and enter dharwad, the one near dharwad HC . 2. Hubli entry point. 3. Just a little ahead of hubli . (Not sure of this one though) Source: A local had warned me about these the last time I done this route.
If possible try to break up the journey into two parts if you wanna ride comfortably to bengaluru.Leave mumbai by 10 am so that you reach pune by 2 pm and you hit hubli by 8 pm.
1. Mumbai-->Pune-->Hubli (Halt at hubli)
2.Hubli-->Chitradurga-->Tumkur-->Bangalore

No one is sayin its not good to do the ride The route you had chosen would be a tedious one. NH4 would be butter smooth comparably.

P.S If you dont have prior experience of NH4 its advisable to just make short trips so as to season up for the roads. The roads would be straight, give you an invitation to rip apart, but the dangers are totally unpredictable and just take moments to come in front of you.

I did this stretch - Benguluru to Pune just last week. Whole route is excellent. Only thing to watch out is 3 diversions of 1 km each near Haveri. Otherwise, you can easily maintain an average speed of 120kmph.

NH4 is THE way to go.

Just came that way from Kerala on Saturday..... butter smooth roads, except, as Vishwas said, the 3 stretches... was able to make the 980kms journey in 16hrs in a M800...so figure

PS: You modding the FZ... what all do you have in mind?
Coz from what I remember Joel only has the exhaust as of now. And having that shipped across probably makes more sense than riding it all the way

@Vishwas - your 250cc can touch 170, my 800cc doesn't go beyond 125

Joel has revealed his plans for FZ in the relevant FZ owners thread & his range of goodies include a 180 CC kit for FZ along with some carb adjustments & also the FFE.. He may be done with all these within a month as mentioned by him

The best route is Mumbai-Pune-Kolhapur-Belgaum. Halt at Belgaum. Its almost the midpoint for your ride. The next day you can cover Belgaum-Hubli-Chitradurga-Tumkur-Bangalore. Its always recommended that you cover the Hubli-Chitradurga stretch during day time. Lots of private buses ply on this road. They are very rash.

CITY LIMITS:
Yes there are interceptors, and they are mainly for the Cabbies who drive rashly. The interceptor will not be there always but, why take a chance right? What you can do is, catch hold of a Tourist bus which will be doing speeds of 70-80kmph and tail gate them till traffic comes upto your neck! Tailgating them makes the interceptor less aware of a two wheeler coming behind 6 or 8 wheeler. Make sure you maintain safe distance doing this.

This stretch between Nelamangala(Outskirts of Bangalore starts from here) and Yeshwantpur(also known as Yasvantpur) is very dangerous now. They have done a toll road here. Sometimes the toll road is flyover and other times its on par with ground. Pedestrians are allowed to cross this so called toll roads. They cross the roads in 'athlete mode' just like some fools cross open railway tracks. Keep a look on them.

OTHER ALTERNATIVES:
If you tell me the place where Joel lives, i can tell you an alternative route(like NICE road and outer ring road. former being toll road) to the normal traffic road which you have to follow to reach the heart of the city.
