Prologue: I am an investment banker and this is my first bike. I am not an avid biker but have bought this awesome looker for weekend/ fun rides. I (just like everyone) play cricket in my neighbourhood park every Sunday. Most of the guys, who are my cricket buddies, are younger to me and almost all of them have Bult (Bullet). When Royal Enfield launched classic 500 in later half of 2009, I was quite keen to buy one. The other option that I was considering was a baby Ninja. I even test drove the 500 but when I saw a Ninja in the Vasant Vihar PRB showroom, I was bowled over by her awesome looks. I was in love.

The confusion still prevailed, as there was a marked difference in pricing of both these bikes. I used our mai/ baap Google to dig out more information about both these bikes. Then I stumbled upon a website (bcm touring) that had an ownership review of classic 500. I was hooked and used to read it daily. Then I tried to find a similar review/ blog about baby Ninja and found one at team-bhp.com. Finally I decided that if you want Japanese reliability with awesome looks then you will have to shell out 3 lacs and bring your baby home, which I did in April 2010. Then I also stumbled upon the best forum/ platform for bikers (x-bhp.com) and became a member.

I was amazed to see the photo features/ journeys/ experiences of our fellow xbhpians. I was hooked on to many forums that discussed trips to manali and beyond (LEH). Then the keeda to get lehed got bit me too and I started dreaming of going there.

But and a big B U T was that I have done a blunder and booked a Ninja instead of the mighty 500. Now what?

I even left few posts to discuss the possibility of taking my baby over ere, but the response from all was negative. Low end torque, low ground clearance, low fuel mileage, etc. etc. etc. and I was feeling so low.

Did a few rides in the plains to get over the running in period and I was into a bikers group created out of my fellow cricketers. I tried my best to get lehed with them in 2010 but I guess I was not destined to do so. I even thought of an outrageous idea of joining a group of strangers (fellow xbhpians, but still strangers), but was turned down and felt relieved as I was not 100% convinced in joining them.

Then again in April- May 2011, the keeda was getting active. I tried convincing my cricket buddies about the same but everyone had their own set of problems and a 15- 20 day trip to the north was out of question for them. We (four of us) instead went on a 2 day trip to Chail in April 2011, but thats another story. Why did I mention this then? The answer is that a fellow rider on a black Bult from that trip (now onwards referred as Mr. X in the rest of the blog as I do not want to name him) and I were quite keen on a week long trip somewhere.

Mr X is at least 7 8 years younger to me, unmarried, rides a black Bult (old one with gears and brakes placed in such a manner that a guy like me would eventually fall of in minutes of starting the ride), works in a call centre.

I 33 yrs of age, much married with an awesome 1 year old daughter, have a green Ninja, work in a Bank; was his companion on this trip.

I suggested Mr. X that we head towards Chandrataal. I learnt through one of the xbhp forums that Prateek is also planning a similar trip. I thought that as we are only 2 riders we can join them, but they were planning to leave Delhi a week before us and thus this idea fizzled out. We did more planning and then came a day when we got to know about the Manali- Rohtang madness, 6- 7 hour long traffic jams; govt. deciding to introduce permits for non HP registered vehicles. Though, later on it was clarified that bikers are exempt from the same but still we got quite worried and then eureka; I suggested that we head towards Shimla and then continue towards Kaza and cross Kumzum-la to reach Chandrataal. Mr. X was hesitant at first, as this would be a 7-8 days trip, but when I forwarded him some snaps of the Kinnaur- Spiti valley he agreed. I made the following travel plan:-

    Day 1 Delhi- Shimla- Narkanda
    Day 2 Narkanda- Poh
    Day 3 Poh- Kaza
    Day 4 At Kaza
    Day 5 Kaza- Chandrataal
    Day 6 Chandrataal- Manali
    Day 7 Manali- Chandigarh
    Day 8 Chandigarh- Delhi

We would be roughly covering around 1,700 Kms in 8 days and we were unaware of the road conditions beyond Shimla- Narkanda. A lot was said online about the road conditions and possible water crossings between Chandrataal and Manali, but nothing much was written about the condition of the road between Narkanda to Chandrataal.

We went to Delhi Cant market and bought two backpacks with a carrying capacity of 60- 70 litres (approx.). These were supposed to be water proof bags (well as long as you dont pour some water on them) and cost us Rs. 1,500/--. Some basic medicines and one for AMS (on the basis of the article in xbhp magazine) were also procured. Maggi cuppa noodles, basic glucose biscuits, etc. completed the list. Well all done now we were set for Day 1.

    Stay hooked guys!

My bad I should have made it more clear. The name of the place is Shijling while the river is Spiti.

Do share your experiences too. If you have a thread running, do post the link over here.
Yeah i remember i saw you and Mr. X zooming past us @ Ambala Bypass. We were initially going via Manali but we headed towards Pathankot because of bad weather at Manali. That's why we were waiting there at the bypass just to take a call.
Anyways... i haven't created any thread till now... So here are the two links of my Leh Ladakh Ride's Pictures on Fb.
