    Default PICS---KARIZMA n RX135 RIPPING HIMACHAL-UTTRANCHAL

Had been waiting to go for a nice long himachal trip since 3-4 months and it finally took place..
I was planning to go alone but then had a talk with dr arun thareja , owner of a rd350,enfield 500,rx135 and a Kawasaki zx12r (!!)
Even he wanted to take a break from usual hectic daily routine.. so we planned out a nice little 1000km drive for 3 days.
The plan was to take National Highway 1 (NH-1) to Ambala. Then NH-22 from Ambala to Bassi to Shimla to Theog. Then Theog to Rohru. Next day Rohru to Mussoorie via Mori. And the last day Mussoorie to Delhi via Dehradun.
    States covered : delhi-haryana-himachal pradesh-uttranchal-uttar-pradesh-delhi

Me on my 12500km old silver karizma with new continental tyres, new brake shoes and a complete service. Doc on his modified rx135 (5 speed) with KRP exhaust and a new head , a pulsar tank and headlamp, wide 100/90 rear tyre, front disc brake.

(--all times do not include time for breaks--)

    11th June :
    6 am : Delhi-Karnal (130kms, 110 mins)
its worth taking a break at Karnal just before the toll barrier. You get nice paranthas and stuff for breakfast. Nice big dhabas here.

    Karnal Ambala (70kms, 60mins)
    Very nice roads

    Ambala Bassi (32kms , 45mins)
Single lane highway , take precautions , very erratic traffic.
Take a right from Bassi for Kalka , straight goes to Chandigarh.

    Bassi Kalka (app 32kms , 45 mins)
Again single lane highway. Filled petrol just before Kalka. Karizma returned 37kmpl at 90-95kmph cruising speeds and twice 130+. Impressive!!

    Kalka Shimla (app 85kms , app 130mins )
Nice mountain roads. Karizma most of the times needed one gear shift less as compared to Rx!! Enjoyed ripping the roads. Stopped twice en-route for tea and snacks.

    Shimla- Theog (30kms , 75 mins)
Filled petrol at Dhalli , about 8kms from Shimla. Karizma returned 28kmpl coz from Kalka it was all up-hill driving.
From Theog,we left the NH-22 and took the road to Rohru.

    Theog-Kotkhai (32kms , 75 mins)
Narrow mountain roads with big drop on one side. Take precautions. Roads condition not too good.

    Kotkhai Rohru (55kms , 110 mins)
Roads still not good but scenery now becomes nice. During the last 10kms or so, river starts flowing along the road. Do stop at road side tea joints.

    Lessons learnt on day 1:
Driving almost 12 hours (driving + breaks) can really be tiring. Thighs and butt start paining. Karizmas seat is good only for at most 3 hours stretch for highways and 1.5 hrs for hills. One should take ample breaks in-between.
Drivers in hills are nice , if u beep once , they slow down , give u side to pass. Thumps up to them : )
Dont use front disc much in the bumpy turns , it may catch u off-guard. If taking a bumpy turn fast , say , u r approaching at around 60-65 in 4th , stay in 4th , dont pull the clutch , just press the rear brake into the turn , speed will be shed nicely will a bit of tyre screeching. Feels nice and like this bumpy turns can be taken quite fast.
On newly laid roads , dont lean too much , they are slippery .

Rohru is a small cute town besides the pabbar river.
Stayed at Hotel Chansal (500/600 per room)

Total distance covered app 470kms. Started at 6am,reached at 6pm
    Top speeds achieved :
    3rd gear : 98kmph , hit the limiter
    4th gear : 113kmph , could have gone to about 116-117 I guess
5th gear :133kmph , could have gone to atleast 137-138 I guess but I couldnt bend down properly due to luggage. Also the luggage must be hampering the air flow.

    12th June :
left at around 9. About 3 kms from the hotel , a small dirt track goes down from the road to the river bed. Do go there. Felt nice. Did a bit of off-roading too.

    Rohru Tiuni : (35kms , 80 mins)
Typical narrow nice cute mountain roads. Practice caution on turns , use a lot of horn. Again drivers are very kind. They slow down and even stop sometimes to let u pass. Just honk the horn once or twice and they will give u the way. Also once u pass , thank them by raising ur left hand.

    Tiuni Mori (app 30kms , 70 mins)
By far the best stretch of road. The Tons river runs very close to the road. Awesome scenery. Many camps like RIVER MYSTIC and BANJARA CAMPS have their camps by the river. Roads r also better here

    Mori Yamuna Bridge (118kms , 220 mins)
Again a mix of bad and good roads , boring and awesome scenery. In between theres a lot of uphill climb when u reach the top of the mountain and u get a superb view of the valley around. Cute roads too. During the last 10-15kms before yamuna bridge , it gets quite sunny and usual boring mountain roads.

Yamuna Bridge Mussoorie (29 kms , 65 mins)
Upto Kempty Falls , its all uphill driving , quite steep. Ok roads. After Kempty Falls , its again all up-hill drive. This was the tourist season , there was a lot of traffic but it was great passing a line of cars with the horn blaring and headlights flashing!!

Total distance covered : app 212 kms . started at 9 , reached at 5pm.
Top speed achieved : around 95 on a nice open road.

In between I drove docs Rx.. man o man.. it was a bit sluggish at low rpm but once u cross a certain Rpm , it just flies.. the pull is mind blowing!! I was really enjoying it.. every time I got that pull , I had a big grin on my face.. the suspension was harder than karizmas , the brakes also lacked the bite but the acceleration once past that Rpm was intoxicating.. I actually started racing with doc who was on my Karizma. Had a lot of fun teasing him..

Also on the way , when doc was on his Rx, doc was trying to avoid a big stone , so he braked.. but the bike skidded in the dust lying on the road.. he fell.. the bike was doing around 25-30.. I was always leading the way.. so I heard some metal hitting the ground.. I looked back and saw him lying down.. god! I braked hard BUT as the Karizma came to a stop , I couldnt control it and me and my bike went down too!! Wat a scene it was. Both the bikers lying down , separated by around 60-70 meters!! I got up , picked the bike , turned around , reached him. Helped him pick up the bike . He had scratches on his arms . His bike suffered a broken rear view mirror , a cracked headlamp , a bit of petrol leak , a small dent on tank and minor scratches. The bike refused to start and had to be pushed by me (on mountain roads) 5-6 times b4 it came to life.. anyways we resumed our journey..

After that in the next town , we stopped to buy water. It was a tarmac road , I had put my bike on the side stand.. as I was paying for the water, I heard a big thud.. my bike was down!! The road had caved in!! My bike suffered a broken clutch lever.. I did the rest of the trip upto Dehradun with a broken lever! Did a lot of clutch-less shifting.

Also on this day I really pushed my bike on certain sections doing 65-70 on narrow roads , taking bumpy turns at 50-55 .. the bike is really nice , the suspension coping up very well , the extra seat space allowing weight transfer , the abundance of torque minimizing gear shifts etc etc
This day I also got sun-tanned.. my arms , my face.. !! arms were itching too.. the color of the skin had changed!! Later when I washed them , it was paining a bit.. so my advice is : wear full sleeves shirt/t-shirt if u go on such a trip

Stayed the night at mussoorie . No vehicles allowed on the mall road before 10:30pm.. so we parked our bikes outside the mall road.. Mussoorie was like chandni chownk of Delhi.. full with people..overcrowed!! we managed to get a room after going thru 6-7 hotels , for 900 bucks a night!!

    13th June 14, 2004
Started for Delhi at around 10:15am..

    Mussoorie Dehradun (35kms , 65 mins)
Nice wide roads.. u can see Dehradun thru out the trip from Mussoorie from the roads on the turns..

    Dehradun Delhi (265kms, 300 mins)
There is about 12-15kms of winding roads after Dehradun , again wide enuf for upto 3 cars.. after that its all one lane highway till Delhi but we managed good speeds.. sun was out.. it was HOT tiring trip..
Had lunch at Sheetal Grand , nice stop over about 25kms before Meerut. A very big fast food type Restaurant with lawns and greenery all around. Do stop here
Delhi is actually about 250 kms from Dehradun but coz we live in Paschim Vihar , the other end of town , it took us an extra 15kms to reach home.

I had put my towel on my head , my helmet on top of it. Tied the rest of the towel around my neck.. very helpful to avoid heat-stroke

    Total distance : 300kms. Started at 10:15am , reached 5:30 pm.
Max speed achieved : 121 on a windy road in normal sitting position while racing with a 800 (!!!!)

I never filled any petrol after Dhalli (shimla)
On reaching Delhi I tanked up.
The Karizma returned a very good 36kmpl for the whole trip , which included about 500kms of mountain driving.. and we never compromised on speed.. impressive indeed.

Both the bikes didnt need any spares. We just adjusted the chains on day 2 before starting for Mussoorie. The bikes never gave any probs at all. And ya , wheelies were part and parcel of the whole trip even doc started popping little wheelies from day 2 onwards! He He He
